Chapter 31 - Beneath the sand

The desert split open like a wound.

Not clean.

Not precise.

Violent.

The ground tore itself apart in jagged lines that spread outward from a single point, sending waves of sand crashing outward like a storm without wind. The tremor rolled beneath the palace walls, shaking stone and bone alike.

Soldiers stumbled.

Some dropped to one knee.

Others simply stared.

Because no training prepared you for this.

Cassian did not move.

He stood at the edge of the wall, his gaze fixed on the rupture in the desert, every instinct in him sharpening into something cold and focused.

Beside him, Menek spoke under his breath.

"That's not natural."

Cassian's voice was quieter.

"No."

Another tremor shook the ground.

Stronger this time.

Closer.

"What do we do?" one of the commanders asked, stepping forward.

Cassian didn't look at him.

"Hold position."

The man hesitated.

"Hold position?" he repeated, disbelief creeping into his voice.

Cassian finally turned.

"And do what, exactly?" he asked, his tone razor-sharp.

"Charge it?"

Silence fell instantly.

Because there was no answer to that.

Behind him

Nyxara moved.

At first, it was subtle.

A shift in weight.

A step forward.

Then another.

Drawn.

Pulled.

Her breathing slowed, her expression distant, her focus locked entirely on the breaking desert.

"Nyxara."

Cassian's voice cut through the noise.

She didn't respond.

"Nyxara."

Still nothing.

Menek noticed now.

"That's not good."

Cassian moved quickly, stepping in front of her, blocking her path.

Her eyes lifted.

But they didn't focus on him.

They looked through him.

"You need to move," she said softly.

Cassian's jaw tightened.

"You're not going anywhere."

Nyxara tilted her head slightly.

"It's calling me."

"I don't care."

"You should."

Her voice shifted.

Not louder.

Not harsher.

But deeper.

Layered.

Like something else was speaking beneath her words.

Cassian felt it.

And for the first time

Something like unease crept into his chest.

The ground erupted.

From the center of the rupture, something began to rise.

At first, it was only shadow.

A distortion in the air.

Then form.

Mass.

A structure no, not a structure.

Something alive.

Something ancient.

Dark stone or something like it pushed upward through the sand, jagged and uneven, shaped like broken spires fused together in unnatural angles. It stretched higher, larger, as though the desert itself was peeling back to reveal it.

A low sound followed.

Not a roar.

Not a scream.

Something deeper.

A vibration.

It wasn't heard.

It was felt.

Inside the chest.

Inside the bones.

Inside the mind.

Several soldiers dropped their weapons.

One fell to his knees, clutching his head.

Another staggered backward.

"What… is that…?" someone whispered.

No one answered.

Because no one could.

Nyxara stepped forward again.

Cassian grabbed her arm immediately.

Her skin was cold.

Colder than it should have been.

"Stay here," he said.

Nyxara turned her head slowly.

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

"No," she said.

Her gaze sharpened just slightly.

"That thing out there?"

She pointed toward the rising mass.

"It's not coming for the palace."

Cassian's grip tightened.

"Then what is it coming for?"

Nyxara met his eyes.

"Me."

Another tremor.

Stronger.

The walls groaned slightly under the pressure.

The entity rose higher.

Its shape becoming clearer.

Not fully defined.

Not stable.

But unmistakably

Not human.

Menek stepped closer to Cassian.

"We can't let that thing reach the walls."

Cassian didn't respond.

His focus was entirely on Nyxara.

Because she wasn't resisting anymore.

She wasn't fighting the pull.

She was

Listening.

Inside her mind, the world had gone quiet.

The noise of the soldiers.

The shaking of the ground.

Even Cassian's voice

Faded.

All that remained was the presence.

Closer now.

Clearer.

Stronger.

You feel it now.

The voice wasn't spoken.

It existed.

Inside her.

Around her.

Through her.

Nyxara's breath steadied.

"What are you?" she whispered.

What you were always meant to become.

Her fingers curled slightly.

"No."

You've felt it since the beginning.

Images flickered through her mind.

The first surge of power.

The corridor.

The garden.

The loss of control.

The pull.

It had always been there.

Waiting.

You are not losing control.

The presence deepened.

You are remembering it.

"Nyxara!"

Cassian's voice cut through again.

Sharp.

Grounding.

Real.

Her gaze flickered.

The presence shifted.

Not gone.

But… challenged.

Cassian stepped closer, his voice low and firm.

"Stay with me."

Nyxara's breathing faltered.

"You don't know what you're asking."

"Then tell me."

Her eyes flickered again.

Between him

And the thing rising from the desert.

"It's not just power," she said.

"It's… everything."

Cassian didn't flinch.

"Then fight it."

Nyxara shook her head.

"You can't fight something that's part of you."

Cassian's voice hardened.

"Then you decide which part wins."

The entity moved.

Not forward.

Not toward the palace.

Toward her.

The ground between it and the walls shifted, the sand pulling inward as if dragged by an invisible force.

The distance closed.

Slowly.

Inevitably.

Menek swore under his breath.

"It's locking onto her."

Cassian didn't look away.

"I know."

"We need to move her."

Cassian's grip on Nyxara tightened slightly.

But she didn't move.

Not because he held her.

Because she couldn't.

"I can feel it," she whispered.

Her voice trembled not with fear.

With something else.

Recognition.

"It's been waiting for me."

Cassian's voice dropped.

"And you're going to make it wait longer."

Nyxara almost smiled.

"You still think you can stop this."

"I don't need to stop it."

Cassian stepped closer.

"I just need to stop you from going to it."

For a moment

Everything stilled.

The wind.

The sand.

The sound.

All of it.

Paused.

As if the world itself was holding its breath.

Then Nyxara moved.

Fast.

Faster than before.

Not toward the palace.

Toward the wall.

Toward the desert.

Cassian reacted instantly, pulling her back

But this time

She resisted.

The force exploded between them.

Cassian was thrown backward, hitting the stone with enough force to crack it.

Gasps erupted around them.

Menek moved forward

Then stopped.

Because Nyxara was standing in the center of the wall

Alone.

The air around her distorted.

The same power

But stronger.

Sharper.

Controlled.

Nyxara's breathing steadied.

Her posture straightened.

Her eyes

Changed.

Not fully.

Not completely.

But enough.

"I told you," she said quietly.

Her voice layered again.

"You can't stop this."

Cassian pushed himself up, ignoring the pain.

"I don't have to."

Nyxara tilted her head slightly.

"No?"

Cassian's gaze hardened.

"I just have to decide what you are."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Nyxara looked at him.

Really looked this time.

And for a brief moment

Something human flickered back.

"Cassian…"

But it didn't last.

The presence surged again.

Stronger.

Deeper.

Final.

The entity reached the edge of the desert.

Closer than ever.

Waiting.

Cassian stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

Toward her.

Toward the line he couldn't uncross.

"Last chance," he said quietly.

Nyxara's lips parted slightly.

But no words came.

Because she didn't know

If the choice was still hers.
