Chapter 64 - Chapter Sixty-Four

As they stepped outside, Michael's hand lightly grazed hers, sending a tingling warmth through her fingertips, as if a soft breeze had whispered across her skin. A shiver danced down her spine, a mix of excitement and nervousness. He brushed his knuckles against hers, a possessive gesture that made her heart skip a beat.

'Get in. I'm taking you home,' he murmured, his voice laced with a hint of possessiveness.

Chioma obediently climbed into the sleek Lamborghini, her mind still preoccupied with the upcoming visit to Michael's home. Sliding deeper into the luxurious embrace of the seat, a world away from her worn furniture, she stole a glance at Michael. His profile, illuminated by the soft glow of the dashboard, was alluring to behold. His beautiful jawline and perfectly sculpted features exuded a sense of confidence and sophistication. The soft lighting accentuated his well-crafted cheekbones. His almond-shaped eyes, focused on the road ahead, reflected a mix of determination and gentleness, making it hard for her to look away. His thin, sexy lips were mesmerising and appealing. In other words, Michael was perfect in every way—blessed with both wealth and beauty.

The sleek Lamborghini glided through the city, the steady hum of the engine a soothing sound amid the noise of honking horns and distant sirens. The cityscape was a blur of twinkling lights against the inky blackness of the night, a breathtaking panorama of urban life.

She had heard whispers about the Njemanze villa, how it was lavishly made of money, and equipped with every luxury, from butlers to maids. Michael's family lived an incredibly opulent life. However, Chioma couldn't shake the feeling of being a lowly girl from a poor home. How could she possibly step into such a majestic villa, a place that felt like living in heaven on earth? How could she, a girl who slept beneath a roof that sometimes surrendered to the drumming rain, possibly belong in such a place?

Here, she was surrounded by the comforting purr of the high-end engine, a world away from the creaking noises of her own house. Chioma felt like a simple wildflower, sprung from the mud, while Michael seemed sculpted from a different world, a world of polished diamonds and effortless privilege, with every luxury imaginable at his fingertips.

A genuine smile, warm and unguarded, spread across Michael's face as he caught her gaze. 'You don't need to worry too much about that,' he murmured, his eyes sparkling with amusement. 'We'll have to shop for a suitable outfit.'

Chioma shook her head. 'No, I want to wear what I have,' she paused, determined. 'I want your family to accept me for who I am.'

Michael's smile softened, his gaze holding a hint of admiration. 'That will surely happen,' he assured her, his voice gentle. 'What about working at Moon Corporation?'

'I want to rely on myself to find a better job. I don't want to use you as a stepping stone for my own benefit,' Chioma replied with conviction.

Michael didn't insist and instead gave her an affectionate smile. He pulled up in front of her house, and Chioma stepped out, heading inside.

Pushing open the door, Chioma stepped into the warm glow of the television and the inviting aroma of Louisa's signature achara tea, which she sipped from time to time from the chipped mug on the stool beside her. Andrew sprawled on the couch, eyes glued to the screen. He didn't notice Chioma come in as he was completely absorbed by the program. A half-eaten bag of chips forgotten on the centre table beside his cold Pepsi, showing how focused he was on the TV.

Louisa, nestled in her armchair, her brow furrowed in concentration as she knitted, glanced up at the sound of the creaking door. A faint smile played on her lips as her eyes landed on Chioma, who stood there, a vibrant bouquet of roses clutched tightly to her chest. The unspoken question in Louisa's gaze needed no voice. Chioma offered a small, self-conscious laugh.

'They're from Michael,' she confirmed, the tips of her ears flushing a soft pink.

Louisa's smile widened, her eyes twinkling with understanding. Andrew, finally tearing his gaze from the TV, rumbled, 'We had dinner without you, dear. Would you like something to eat?'

Chioma shook her head softly and teased Andrew, 'No, thank you, Dad. I know you know I must have eaten. You're deliberately trying to turn me into a pig.' Her eyes twinkled with amusement.

'What's wrong with that?' Andrew chuckled and then added, 'How could you still dress like that for a candlelit dinner? Michael could have bought you an evening gown... anyway, as long as you're happy, then I support you, little sister.'

'I love what I'm wearing,' Chioma replied, pausing for a moment. 'I'm a little tired, so I'll go ahead.' A yawn escaped her lips, betraying the weariness in her eyes.

Louisa smiled as she said, 'Why don't I prepare the bathroom for you so you can take a bath and feel better?' She started to rise from her chair, her movements gentle.

Chioma smiled, declining the offer. 'Mum, please don't treat me like I'm already married to a prince. I'm still your humble daughter. I'll take care of it myself. You should rest.'

Andrew smiled, taking a long sip from his drink. 'All right, goodnight, my child,' he teased.

Chioma playfully rolled her eyes at her brother, then turned to Louisa. 'Goodnight, Mum. You still have to go to the market tomorrow, so make sure to get some rest. Same goes for you, Andrew,' Chioma said, turning to Andrew again.

Chioma smiled at her mother before heading to her bedroom. Inside, she tossed her bag on the bed and placed the bouquet on her study desk. Then, she took a bath and changed into her nightdress before lying down on the bed.
