I tried to forget the look Vanessa gave Daniel.
I really tried.
People imagine things when they are tired. When they are stressed. When they are insecure.
That was what I told myself.
That was what I needed to believe.
Later that night Daniel went to take a shower, leaving his phone on the couch.
I wasn't trying to spy.
I had never checked his phone before. Not once in our marriage.
Trust was supposed to mean something.
Then the screen lit up.
A notification appeared.
Vanessa.
My chest tightened instantly.
I stared at the phone.
I could just ignore it.
That would be the normal thing to do.
But something from dinner kept bothering me.
That look.
That smile.
That feeling.
Before I realized what I was doing, I picked up the phone.
The message preview showed:
"Did you get home safe?"
I blinked.
That sounded normal.
Friendly.
So why did it feel wrong?
Why didn't she ask me that?
My fingers felt cold as I locked the phone again.
I was overthinking.
I had to be.
Then another message came in.
The vibration felt louder this time.
"Don't forget tomorrow."
My heart began beating faster.
Tomorrow?
Forget what?
Daniel never mentioned any plans.
A strange uneasiness settled in my stomach.
I placed the phone back exactly where it was.
Seconds later the bathroom door opened.
Daniel walked out, relaxed, smiling, drying his hair.
"Everything okay?" he asked.
I forced a smile.
"Yeah. Just tired."
His phone buzzed again.
His eyes moved to it immediately.
Too quickly.
He picked it up and replied fast.
Almost instinctively.
Like he didn't want me to see.
Something inside me shifted again.
Small.
But real.
That quiet voice from earlier returned.
Pay attention.
That night Daniel fell asleep quickly.
I didn't.
My thoughts kept replaying everything.
The look.
The messages.
His reaction.
Around 2 AM I finally got up to drink water.
The apartment was dark and silent.
As I passed the hallway mirror…
I stopped.
Something felt wrong.
I slowly stepped back.
My reflection stared at me.
But that wasn't what bothered me.
It was the shadow behind me.
It looked…
Too dark.
Too solid.
Like it wasn't just an absence of light.
Then it moved.
Just slightly.
I froze.
I hadn't moved.
My breathing became shallow.
Then I heard it again.
Soft.
Like a thought that wasn't mine.
"Watch them."
I turned quickly.
Nothing there.
Just silence.
Just darkness.
Just me.
But for the first time…
I wasn't only afraid of betrayal.
I was afraid of what was happening to me.
