Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 The Truth Leak

The rain didn't stop.

It thickened.

Like the air itself had weight now.

Kenjii didn't move.

Not because he couldn't.

Because something told him

moving right now would be a mistake.

Across the street, the man in the dark coat hadn't advanced.

Hadn't spoken.

But he wasn't looking at the shadow anymore.

He was looking at Kenjii

Really looking.

"…you feel it," the man said.

Kenjii didn't answer.

He was still staring at the ground.

At his shadow.

It hadn't moved.

But something about it

felt delayed.

Like it was waiting for him to decide something first.

Kenjii exhaled slowly.

"…yeah," he said.

A pause.

"…I feel something."

The man's jaw tightened.

"That shouldn't be possible."

Kenjii let out a quiet breath through his nose.

"You've said that three times now."

No response.

The man's attention sharpened.

"You don't understand what you brought back."

Kenjii finally lifted his head.

"I'm starting to think I didn't bring anything back."

Silence.

The rain hit harder.

For a moment

nothing moved.

Then

The shadow beside him shifted.

Not toward the man.

Not toward the surrounding shadows.

Toward Kenjii.

Slow.

Measured.

Kenjii felt it before he saw it.

That pressure again.

Inside.

Colder this time.

Not external.

Internal.

His fingers curled slightly.

"…okay," he muttered.

That wasn't normal.

Across the street, the man took another step back.

"You need to return it," he said.

Kenjii didn't look at him.

"I don't think that's an option."

"It is."

Kenjii shook his head once.

"No."

A beat.

"I don't think it listens to me."

The man's voice dropped.

"…it doesn't."

Kenjii eyes flicked up.

"Then we're on the same page."

Another pause.

Then

The man said it.

Quiet.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"You didn't escape."

Kenjii went still.

The words didn't hit like impact.

They settled.

Slow.

"…what?"

The man's gaze didn't waver.

"You didn't leave that place."

Kenjii frowned slightly.

"I walked out."

"No."

The man took a slow breath.

"You were allowed out."

Silence.

The rain felt louder now.

Kenjii expression didn't change.

But something behind his eyes

shifted.

"…that's a weird way to say the same thing."

"It's not the same thing."

The man's voice sharpened.

"One implies freedom."

A pause.

"The other implies purpose."

Kenjiididn't respond.

Didn't move.

Because something inside him—

reacted.

The pressure tightened.

Not pain.

Not yet.

Just

presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

Tony inhaled slowly.

"…you're saying I was sent?"

"I'm saying," the man replied,

"something needed to cross that boundary."

Kenjii eyes narrowed slightly.

"And it used me?"

The man didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

The shadow beside Kenjii moved again.

Closer.

The darkness overlapped his feet.

His shadow

shifted.

This time

it didn't correct immediately.

It stayed off.

Wrong.

Kenjii stared at it.

"…that's not mine."

Across the street

the man whispered:

"…no."

Kenjii breathing slowed.

Not out of control.

But deliberate now.

Measured.

"…then whose is it?"

The man didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Because the shadow

moved first.

Kenjii hadn't moved.

Hadn't even twitched.

But the shadow

leaned forward.

Like it was stepping ahead of him.

Testing something.

Kenjii felt it again.

That pressure.

Deeper now.

Colder.

Closer.

Not beside him.

Not behind him.

Inside him.

Kenjii jaw tightened slightly.

"…yeah," he said quietly.

"…that's definitely new."

Across the street

the man took another step back.

This time

not controlled.

Fear.

"…it's starting," he said under his breath.

Kenjii eyes lifted slowly.

"Starting what?"

The man didn't answer.

Instead

he looked directly at Kenzie

For the first time

like he was looking at the problem.

Not the shadow.

Kenzie

"…you need to understand something," the man said.

His voice was lower now.

Almost careful.

"That thing

He pointed.

Not at the shadow beside Jenni

At Kennith himself.

"…isn't following you."

Kanji didn't speak.

Didn't react.

But something inside him

shifted again.
