Sasuke woke before dawn, a habit from his Crown Tundra training that his body refused to break. Victini remained curled against his chest, snoring softly, completely content.
He extracted himself carefully from the Victory Pokemon's grip and moved through his morning routine quietly, stretching exercises, meditation, reviewing battle strategies on his phone. The gym challenge had been delayed by Kasumi's Contest, but now it was time to focus on his own progress.
By the time the others woke, Sasuke had already prepared breakfast and mapped the route to Cerulean Gym. The facility was on the opposite end of the city from the Contest Hall, built directly over the bay's deepest section.
"Today's the day?" Miyuki asked, descending the stairs with her silver hair still slightly messy from sleep.
"Registration day. Battle will probably be scheduled for later this week." Sasuke plated eggs and toast. "Want to come? Or are you planning Center work?"
"I'll come. Nurse Joy can manage without me for a morning." She accepted the plate gratefully. "Besides, I want to see this legendary gym everyone talks about."
Kasumi emerged next, Gardevoir floating beside her. The Psychic-type had barely left her trainer's side since the Contest victory, protective energy radiating constantly. "Cerulean Gym is supposed to be incredible. Built partially underwater with transparent walls so you can see ocean life swimming past during battles."
"Sounds distracting," Kiyomi observed, joining them at the table with her tablet already displaying research. "Deliberate battlefield psychology, make challengers focus on environmental spectacle instead of combat strategy."
They finished breakfast and prepared for the day. Sasuke wore his standard travel clothes, practical rather than impressive. Gym challenges weren't about appearance; they were about competence. His Pokeballs hung from his belt, each containing partners who'd trained extensively for this moment.
The walk to Cerulean Gym took thirty minutes through morning city traffic. The facility became visible from several blocks away, a massive structure that jutted out over the bay on reinforced pillars. The architecture blended modern design with aquatic themes. Flowing curves suggesting waves, blue-tinted glass panels, decorative elements shaped like Water-type Pokemon.
"That's impressive," Miyuki breathed as they approached the entrance.
The lobby was equally spectacular. The floor was transparent, revealing water flowing beneath their feet. Schools of fish swam in the artificial channels, Magikarp, Goldeen, Remoraid, even a few Tentacool. Along the walls, massive aquarium tanks displayed rare Water-types from multiple regions.
"Welcome to Cerulean Gym," the receptionist greeted them from behind a counter shaped like a massive shell. "Are you here to challenge Gym Leader Zabuza?"
"Yes." Sasuke presented his Trainer License, the holographic card that identified him as an official League participant. "Sasuke Uchiha, from Blackthorn City."
The receptionist's eyes widened slightly. "Uchiha? As in-"
"Itachi's my brother. Mikoto's my mother." He'd learned to address the family connection immediately to avoid extended questions.
"I see." She typed information into her computer system. "Gym Leader Zabuza accepts challenges by appointment only. He's reviewing your battle history now, previous gym victories, tournament performances, registered Pokemon team."
A screen on the wall flickered to life, displaying footage Sasuke recognized, his battle against Gaara's Tyranitar in Pewter City. The kaiju-scale Primal Mega clash replayed in highlights, showing strategy and power in equal measure.
"Impressive," a deep voice said from behind them.
Sasuke turned to find a tall man with sharp features and distinctive bandaged lower face. Zabuza Momochi looked exactly like his reputation suggested, intimidating, controlled, radiating the kind of danger that came from years of combat experience.
"You fought that brat Gaara to a standstill," Zabuza continued, approaching with measured steps. "That takes skill. Most challengers last five minutes against his defensive strategies. You gave him a legitimate fight."
"He was strong. Learned a lot from that battle."
"Good answer. The best trainers learn from every opponent." Zabuza studied Sasuke with calculating intensity.
"You are the Coordinator girl who revolutionized Contest culture yesterday?" Zabuza glanced at Kasumi, who stood slightly behind Sasuke. "You performed well. My... associate attended the finals. Said it was the most emotionally impactful Contest battle she'd witnessed."
Kasumi blushed. "Thank you, Gym Leader."
"Don't thank me. Thank yourself for having genuine skill." He returned attention to Sasuke. "I accept your challenge. Battle scheduled for three days from now, gives you time to prepare and me time to finish current challenger queue. Rules are standard. You may use up to six Pokemon, I use one. Victory by knockout or surrender. Battlefield is aquatic terrain with multiple combat zones."
"Understood."
"Fair warning. I don't go easy on anyone. Your family name means nothing in my gym. Itachi earned his victory through skill, not reputation. You'll need to do the same." Zabuza's voice carried weight beyond mere words, this was someone who'd seen real combat, who understood stakes beyond Pokemon battles.
"I wouldn't want it any other way."
"Good." The faintest hint of a smile touched Zabuza's visible features. "Receptionist will provide battlefield specifications and training facility access. Use the next three days wisely. My Kingler has ended twenty-three consecutive challenger attempts. Make sure you're not number twenty-four."
He departed without further ceremony, leaving an almost tangible presence in his wake.
"He's terrifying," Kasumi whispered once Zabuza was gone.
"He's perfect," Sasuke corrected. "That's exactly the kind of opponent who makes you better."
The receptionist provided documentation, battlefield schematics, historical battle footage, training facility access codes. The packet was extensive, designed to give challengers maximum preparation opportunity while ensuring no one could claim they weren't warned about difficulty.
They returned to the Mobile Home to review materials. Sasuke spread the battlefield schematics across the dining table while the others gathered around.
"This is complex," Kiyomi observed, studying the designs. "The battle arena is essentially a massive pool with floating platforms at various heights. Underwater sections connect the platforms, water currents create mobility challenges, and mist generators can reduce visibility to near-zero."
"Designed to favor Water-types completely," Miyuki added. "Any Pokemon uncomfortable in aquatic environments will struggle."
Sasuke pulled up video footage on his laptop. Zabuza's previous battles played out, each one showcasing the Gym Leader's tactical genius. His Kingler was enormous, even in base form. The Water-type's shell looked thick enough to deflect most attacks, and its claws moved with shocking speed despite their size.
"Primal Reversion makes it even larger," Sasuke noted, watching Kingler undergo transformation. "And the Gigantamax form..." The video showed the crustacean Pokemon growing to kaiju proportions, foam bubbling around its shell. "That's going to be a problem."
"Type advantage is essential," Kiyomi said, pulling up the type chart on her tablet. "Water-type weaknesses are Electric and Grass. You have both Raikou and Mega Venusaur available."
"Raikou would seem like the obvious choice, Electric versus Water. But look at how Zabuza uses the battlefield." Sasuke rewound footage showing mist generators activating. "When visibility drops, he controls the battle completely. Raikou relies on seeing opponents to land Thunder attacks accurately."
"Venusaur has vines," Miyuki observed. "Plant senses work through touch and chemical detection. Mist wouldn't impair them the same way it impairs vision."
"Exactly. Grass-type advantage plus non-visual sensing equals best counter-strategy." Sasuke made notes on his phone. "But I need to train Venusaur specifically for aquatic combat. He's used to solid ground, not floating platforms and underwater sections."
"Ocean resistance training," Kasumi suggested. "Cerulean has beaches with calm water. Practice there."
The plan established, they spent the afternoon at a secluded beach on the city's northern edge. Sasuke released Venusaur, the massive Grass-type materializing with a satisfied grunt. The Pokemon had seen limited action since being caught in Crown Tundra, this would be his first major gym battle.
