Chapter 66 - The Water Demon's Challenge II

"We're fighting in water," Sasuke explained, knowing Venusaur could understand human speech. "Floating platforms, underwater sections, probably mist reducing visibility. You need to learn to navigate aquatic environments and fight blind if necessary."

Venusaur rumbled acknowledgment. The Grass/Poison-type waded into the bay carefully, unused to water deeper than puddles. His bulk made swimming difficult, but the massive flower on his back contained air pockets that provided natural buoyancy.

"Use Vine Whip to stabilize," Sasuke instructed. "Anchor yourself to rocks or platforms. Let the vines be your primary sensors."

They practiced for hours. Venusaur learned to extend vines into the water, feeling for objects and movement through pressure changes. Sasuke had Miyuki's Shaymin create artificial mist using Synthesis energy manipulation, reducing visibility while Venusaur practiced targeting.

"Solar Beam while blind," Sasuke called. "Feel where I'm standing through ground vibrations, then fire."

Venusaur's flower glowed as solar energy gathered. The charging process took several seconds, tactically vulnerable time. Then the beam erupted, angling toward Sasuke's position with impressive accuracy despite zero visibility.

"Good. Again."

Kasumi watched from the beach, her Pokemon playing in the surf nearby. She'd brought her portable berry cultivation kit and was working on soil samples while observing Sasuke's training methodology.

"He's thorough," she said to Miyuki, who sat beside her taking notes on Venusaur's conditioning.

"Always has been. Even as children, when we played together, Sasuke approached everything systematically. Never satisfied with 'good enough' when 'excellent' was achievable." Miyuki's expression was fond. "It's one of his most admirable qualities. Also occasionally frustrating when he pushes himself too hard."

"Does he do that? Push too hard?"

"All the time." Miyuki's medical expertise made her voice serious. "He has this internal drive to prove himself outside his brother's shadow. Sometimes that drive becomes self-destructive."

Kasumi absorbed this, understanding Sasuke's psychology better. The pressure of being Itachi's younger brother, of having a Dragon Master mother and a former Elite Four father. Every achievement measured against family legacy rather than personal growth.

No wonder he trained so intensely.

"We should make sure he rests," she said. "Three days of preparation is good. Three days of training until exhaustion is counterproductive."

"Agreed. But telling Sasuke to rest is like telling Raikou to stop generating electricity. Not really possible." Miyuki smiled. "That's where we come in. Interrupt the training periodically with food, conversation, forced breaks. Make rest seem like tactical preparation rather than weakness."

Evening approached with Venusaur showing significant improvement. The Grass-type could now navigate underwater sections confidently, use vines for both sensing and mobility, and execute Solar Beam with eyes closed based purely on environmental awareness.

"That's enough for today," Sasuke decided, recalling Venusaur. "Overtraining creates fatigue. We'll continue tomorrow."

Back at the RV, Sasuke cooked dinner while Kiyomi researched Zabuza's personal history. The Gym Leader's background was fascinating, former member of an organization dedicated to Pokemon smuggling and illegal battles. Had a change of heart after witnessing the cruelty inflicted on captured Pokemon. Turned himself in, served five years in prison, emerged reformed and dedicated to legitimate training.

"He values honor because he lost his own," Kiyomi explained over dinner. "The prison sentence, the public shame, rebuilding reputation from zero. Zabuza respects strength, but he respects honorable strength even more. Trainers who fight dirty or disrespect their opponents get destroyed. Trainers who show genuine skill and ethics earn his approval."

"Good to know," Sasuke said, absorbing the information. "That aligns with how I already approach battles. No tricks, no exploitation, just direct competition and respect for opponents."

"Which is probably why he accepted your challenge so readily," Miyuki observed. "Your battle history shows that approach consistently."

The second day of training focused on battlefield adaptation. They couldn't access the actual gym arena before the scheduled battle, but Cerulean's public training facilities included aquatic battle zones. Sasuke rented one for the entire day, practicing platform navigation and underwater combat with Venusaur.

"Razor Leaf while submerged," Sasuke commanded.

Venusaur dove beneath the surface, his bulk displacing water dramatically. Moments later, leaves shot up from below, sharp enough to cut and moving with unexpected velocity through liquid medium.

"Good. Now combine it with Vine Whip, create a net that traps opponents underwater."

The Grass-type executed the combination flawlessly. Vines spread out beneath the water's surface while Razor Leaves positioned above, creating a three-dimensional trap that would catch anything trying to escape vertically or horizontally.

Other trainers using the facility stopped to watch. Sasuke's methodical approach and Venusaur's rapid skill development drew professional interest. By afternoon, a small crowd had gathered at the observation windows.

"That's Itachi's brother," someone whispered.

"Training Grass-type for Water gym. Smart type advantage."

"Zabuza's going to destroy him anyway. Nobody beats the Demon of the Mist."

Sasuke ignored the commentary and continued training. External opinions meant nothing, only preparation and execution mattered.

The third day combined everything learned. Sasuke ran full simulation battles against Miyuki's Shaymin, who used her natural affinity for environment manipulation to create mist, water currents, and unpredictable terrain changes.

"This is the closest we can get to actual gym conditions," Miyuki explained. "Shaymin will make the environment as hostile as possible. You and Venusaur need to adapt in real-time."

The practice battle was intense. Shaymin created dense fog that reduced visibility to inches. Generated water spouts that disrupted platform stability. Used Seed Flare to create explosive obstacles. Venusaur countered each challenge with growing confidence, vines sensing through mist, Solar Beam firing with blind accuracy, Synthesis healing damage while maintaining combat effectiveness.

"Enough," Sasuke called after thirty minutes of sustained combat. "Venusaur's ready. Any more training risks overexertion."

That evening, they held final strategy session at the RV. Kasumi had prepared special berries, Sitrus for healing, Lum for status condition removal, Leppa for energy restoration. Each berry was optimized through her cultivation expertise, providing maximum benefit.

"Nutrition matters," she explained, arranging berries in a specialized case. "Venusaur will need sustained energy for potentially lengthy battle. These provide that without digestive complications."

Miyuki checked Venusaur's overall conditioning one final time. "Muscle tone is excellent. Cardiovascular system is adapted to underwater exertion. No signs of overtraining damage. He's in peak form."

Kiyomi provided psychological profile updates. "Zabuza will test your honor before testing your strength. Expect him to say things meant to provoke emotional response. Stay calm, stay focused, show respect even under pressure. That's how you earn his acknowledgment."

"Understood."

The night before the battle, Sasuke stood on the RV's roof looking toward Cerulean Gym. The facility was illuminated dramatically against the dark bay, water reflecting its lights like a mirror.

Footsteps on the ladder announced Miyuki's arrival. She settled beside him without speaking, just sharing the moment.

"Nervous?" she asked eventually.

"Focused. Nerves are just energy waiting to be directed."

"Very philosophical. Your father's influence again?"

"Maybe. Or maybe just understanding that anxiety is natural but doesn't have to be debilitating." Sasuke glanced at her. "Thank you for helping with Venusaur's conditioning. Your medical expertise made the training safer and more effective."

"That's what I'm here for. Supporting the team's success." Miyuki's smile was gentle. "You're going to win tomorrow. Not because you're Itachi's brother or Mikoto's son, but because you're Sasuke Uchiha. And that's more than enough."

"I hope so."

They sat together under stars, preparing mentally for the battle ahead. Down below, Kasumi and Kiyomi were doing the same, each contributing their expertise to collective preparation.

This was what made traveling together meaningful. Not just shared destinations, but shared preparation. Not just celebrating victories, but supporting each other through challenges.

Tomorrow, Sasuke would face Zabuza Momochi, the Demon of the Mist, legendary gym leader, reformed criminal who valued honor above power.

It would be a test of everything he'd learned. Every strategy his father had taught, every technique he'd developed, every philosophy he'd refined through traveling with companions who challenged and supported him equally.

The second badge waited. And with it, validation that his journey was legitimate, that he was progressing toward the Indigo League through genuine skill rather than family connections.

Zabuza Momochi awaited. And the Demon of the Mist showed mercy to no one, family name or not.
