The Celadon Contest Hall had never felt larger.
Fifty thousand spectators filled every available seat, their collective anticipation creating an atmosphere that pressed against Kasumi's skin like physical force. Cameras positioned throughout the venue transmitted to regional broadcasts, millions of viewers across Kanto and beyond watching what the announcer had termed "the most anticipated final in years."
"Rookie Phenomenon versus Hoenn Champion!" The voice echoed through massive speakers. "Kasumi Uzumaki, two ribbons and the highest-scoring newcomer in Celadon history, faces May, five-time ribbon winner and two-time Grand Festival finalist! This is the match everyone's been waiting for!"
The crowd's roar made conversation impossible.
Kasumi stood at the challenger's entrance, violet eyes fixed on the stage where her future would be decided. Somewhere across that distance, May waited at the champion's position, the veteran whose shadow Kasumi would need to escape.
Breathe, she reminded herself. You belong here. You earned this.
The entrance music began, and Kasumi walked into the light.
May met her at the stage center, where both Coordinators would exchange traditional pre-battle greetings.
The Hoenn veteran's expression held no arrogance, only the focused determination of someone who respected her opponent. Her five ribbons had taught her that overconfidence destroyed as many competitors as underpreparation.
"Good luck," May said, extending her hand. "Give me everything you have."
"Same to you." Kasumi accepted the handshake firmly. "Let's make it memorable."
"That's all I ever ask."
They separated to their respective positions, the formal exchange complete. The referee stepped forward.
"This is the Championship Final of the Celadon Contest! Best three of five battles will determine our champion! Each battle will be scored for performance, with victory conditions also applying! Coordinators, are you ready?"
Both nodded.
"Then let the finals begin!"
Battle 1: Butterfree vs Beautifly
Kasumi's choice was deliberate.
"Butterfree!"
The Butterfly Pokémon emerged with familiar grace, wings catching light as it oriented toward the battlefield. Nine years of partnership, from frightened Caterpie to confident performer, had led to this moment.
May's smile suggested she understood the selection's significance.
"Beautifly!"
Her own original partner materialized with equal elegance. The Butterfly Pokémon's patterned wings shimmered with colors that decades of cultivation had enhanced.
Bug/Flying versus Bug/Flying. Identical typing. No advantages to exploit.
This battle would be decided by bond and skill alone.
"Battle begin!"
The aerial ballet commenced immediately.
"Quiver Dance!"
Butterfree's signature technique began, the graceful movements that boosted its capabilities while creating visual spectacle. Wings traced patterns in the air, each motion precise yet flowing.
"Silver Wind!"
Beautifly's counter came with artistic intent. Shimmering scales scattered across the battlefield, wind currents catching and distributing them until the entire arena sparkled. The effect was beautiful, but also tactical, the scales would detect Butterfree's movement.
"Match her! Silver Wind!"
Both Butterfly Pokémon now generated wind currents that crossed and mingled, creating atmospheric effects that drew gasps from the audience. The stage became a swirling canvas of shimmering particles and dancing air currents.
"Status chess," Kiyomi observed from the stands. "They're setting up for the real exchange."
"Sleep Powder!"
"Stun Spore!"
Both commands came simultaneously. Clouds of colored particles erupted from both Pokémon, mixing with the existing Silver Wind currents. The status moves spread through the arena, creating a minefield of potential effects.
Neither Coordinator wanted their Pokémon to be hit.
Butterfree weaved through the particle clouds with practiced agility, its compound eyes tracking Stun Spore concentrations while its wings dispersed Sleep Powder toward Beautifly's likely positions.
"Higher!" Kasumi commanded.
Ascending bought time, but also brought Butterfree closer to the arena's ceiling. Limited vertical space meant limited escape routes.
May recognized the opportunity immediately.
"Corner her! Stun Spore, concentrated!"
Beautifly's attack created a dense cloud between Butterfree and the open arena. Descent meant passing through paralytic particles.
But Kasumi had her own trap.
"Sleep Powder, now!"
The timing was precise. Butterfree's powder drifted directly into Beautifly's approach path as the opposing Pokémon maneuvered to block escape routes.
Contact.
Beautifly's movements became sluggish, drowsiness pulling at consciousness. The Butterfly Pokémon struggled to maintain altitude, its wing beats becoming erratic.
"Yes!" Kasumi felt momentum shifting.
"Morning Sun!"
May's command cut through the moment's triumph.
Golden light suffused Beautifly as the healing technique activated.
The sunlight that filtered through the Contest Hall's ceiling, enhanced by architectural design for exactly this purpose, fed directly into the Butterfly Pokémon's recovery. Sleep Powder's effects diminished. Alertness returned. Wing beats stabilized.
"Clever," Kasumi admitted.
"Experience," May replied. "Now, Air Slash!"
Multiple wind blades erupted from Beautifly's wings, the technique enhanced by Silver Wind's lingering effects. The attacks came from angles that standard evasion couldn't cover.
Butterfree dodged some but took others. The Flying-type damage accumulated, each hit weakening the Butterfly Pokémon's aerial stability.
"Recover! Dream Eater!"
The command was instinctive but mistimed. Dream Eater required a sleeping target, and Beautifly was now fully awake.
The attack failed. Energy expended for nothing.
Wasted turn, Kasumi realized with horror. I just,
"Bug Buzz!"
May capitalized instantly.
Sound wave energy erupted from Beautifly, the Bug-type attack creating vibrations that targeted Butterfree's sensory systems. The Butterfly Pokémon reeled, orientation disrupted, unable to maintain proper flight positioning.
"Follow up! Aerial Ace!"
The attack came with speed that made dodging impossible. Beautifly blazed across the arena, Flying-type energy surrounding its form as it struck Butterfree directly.
Impact.
Kasumi's partner tumbled through the air, trying desperately to recover wing stability. But the accumulated damage, Air Slash, Bug Buzz, Aerial Ace, had pushed past sustainable limits.
Butterfree crashed to the stage floor, wings fluttering weakly before falling still.
"Butterfree is unable to battle! Winner of Battle One: May!"
"Performance score: nine-point-four out of ten!"
The crowd's reaction mixed cheers and gasps. May had drawn first blood. The championship match now favored the veteran.
Kasumi crossed the stage to where Butterfree lay, kneeling beside her first partner with gentle hands.
"You did great," she murmured, stroking the Butterfly Pokémon's wings. "That wasn't your fault. I mistimed Dream Eater."
Butterfree chirped weakly, forgiveness that Kasumi felt she hadn't earned.
"Rest now. We'll win the next ones."
She recalled her partner, the Pokéball warm against her palm with residual battle energy.
May waited at her position, expression neutral but eyes carrying something that might have been respect. The veteran had won the opening battle, but she clearly understood how close things had been.
"One-zero," the announcer declared. "May leads! Kasumi must win the next battle or face elimination pressure! Coordinators, prepare for Battle Two!"
The championship match continued.
Kasumi was down but not defeated.
Three more battles remained and she intended to win them all.
