Chapter 140 - The Comeback

The pressure of trailing crystallized Kasumi's focus.

One battle down. Three to go. No room for mistakes, no margin for hesitation. The championship that had seemed within reach now demanded she fight her way back to contention.

Win this one, she told herself. Tie the series. Then it's anyone's match.

"Battle Two!" the announcer declared. "Coordinators, reveal your Pokémon!"

"Glaceon!"

The Fresh Snow Pokémon emerged with crystalline elegance, its ice-blue fur catching stage lights and scattering them into prismatic patterns. Glaceon's presence immediately dropped the surrounding temperature, a physical reminder of its elemental power.

"Wartortle!"

May's choice was strategic. The Turtle Pokémon materialized with confident stance, its water cannons already primed. Water versus Ice, type disadvantage for the veteran, but May had clearly prepared for this matchup.

"Battle begin!"

May attacked before Kasumi could establish control.

"Rapid Spin!"

Wartortle withdrew into its shell and began rotating with speed that blurred its form into a spinning disc. The technique served both offense and defense, attacks would deflect off the spinning shell while momentum built for devastating strikes.

"Aqua Tail!"

Still spinning, Wartortle launched itself toward Glaceon. Water energy surrounded its shell, the rotation enhancing the technique's impact. The combination was brutally effective, a spinning water blade that would be nearly impossible to evade.

"Dodge!"

Glaceon leaped sideways, but Wartortle's rotation allowed instant course correction. The spinning shell tracked its target with relentless precision.

"Again!"

Contact. Glaceon took the hit, Aqua Tail's water energy washing over its ice-type form. The damage was reduced, Water against Ice wasn't super-effective, but the impact's force sent the Fresh Snow Pokémon tumbling.

"She's not giving me time to set up," Kasumi realized aloud.

"That's the plan!" May called across the arena.

Kasumi needed to change the battlefield.

"Blizzard!"

The most powerful Ice-type attack erupted from Glaceon's position, snow and ice filling the arena with winter fury. Temperature plummeted. Visibility dropped. The stage transformed into a frozen landscape that favored Ice-types absolutely.

Wartortle's spinning slowed as ice accumulated on its shell. The rotation that had been so effective now worked against the Turtle Pokémon, each revolution collected more frost, adding weight and friction.

"Type advantage showing," Kiyomi observed from the stands.

"Aurora Veil!"

The defensive barrier materialized around Glaceon, prismatic light creating protection against both physical and special attacks. With Blizzard still raging and Aurora Veil established, Kasumi had seized battlefield control.

"Wartortle!" May's voice carried concern for the first time.

The Turtle Pokémon struggled through the frozen landscape, its shell caked with ice that limited mobility. Every movement required more effort than the last.

"Now we fight on my terms," Kasumi said.

May refused to surrender control.

"Hydro Pump!"

Wartortle planted itself, abandoning mobility for raw power. Water erupted from its cannons with pressure that could have carved stone, directed not at Glaceon, but at the frozen terrain itself.

Ice melted.

Steam filled the arena as superheated water met frozen ground. The landscape Kasumi had created began transforming, ice becoming water that pooled across the stage.

"She's changing the terrain back," Miyuki said.

"Water favors Water-types," Sasuke observed. "May's adapting."

The battlefield became a shallow pond, Wartortle now moving with the easy grace of a Pokémon in its natural element. The ice advantage Kasumi had established was being systematically neutralized.

"I need to re-freeze faster than she can melt."

"Ice Beam, continuous!"

The elemental control fight began in earnest.

Glaceon's Ice Beam swept across the water, refreezing it into solid terrain. But Wartortle's Hydro Pump followed immediately behind, melting the new ice before it could fully set.

Freeze. Melt. Freeze. Melt.

The arena became a patchwork of ice and water, control shifting moment by moment as both Pokémon pushed their elemental abilities to limits.

"Water Pulse!"

May's Wartortle launched the attack while maintaining Hydro Pump, simultaneous techniques that demonstrated the veteran's exceptional training. The Water Pulse struck Glaceon directly.

Confusion chance, Kasumi remembered.

Glaceon's eyes flickered, the attack's secondary effect attempting to disorient. But the bond between Coordinator and Pokémon held firm, Kasumi's focus becoming Glaceon's anchor.

"Stay with me!"

The Fresh Snow Pokémon shook off confusion's pull, clarity returning through their connection.

"Again! Water Pulse!"

"Focus through it! Ice Beam!"

The exchange revealed what made Kasumi different.

Each Water Pulse carried confusion chance. Each hit risked disorientation that would doom Glaceon's chances. But Kasumi's bond with her partner provided something statistics couldn't measure, stability that came from genuine connection.

Glaceon took hits but maintained focus. Confusion's effects flickered but never took hold. The Fresh Snow Pokémon fought through pain because its Coordinator believed in it.

"She's resisting everything," May said, genuine surprise in her voice.

"Bond keeps her clear," Kasumi replied. "Now, I see your opening."

May's aggressive strategy had extended Wartortle too far forward. The Turtle Pokémon's positioning, optimized for offense, left it vulnerable to counter-attack.

"Ice Shard, rapid fire!"

The priority attack came before May could react.

Ice projectiles erupted from Glaceon in rapid succession, not single strikes, but a barrage that filled the air between the Pokémon. Wartortle couldn't dodge them all.

First shard: direct hit. Super-effective damage.

Second shard: glancing blow. Still painful.

Third shard: center mass. Wartortle staggered.

Fourth shard: finishing momentum.

The Turtle Pokémon reeled, Ice-type energy overwhelming Water-type resistance. Each impact accumulated, pushing Wartortle past sustainable damage levels.

"Now!" Kasumi's voice carried absolute certainty. "Freeze-Dry!"

The technique was specifically designed for this moment, Ice-type move that was super-effective against Water-types regardless of normal type charts. The ultimate counter to aquatic opponents.

Glaceon's attack struck Wartortle with precision that made evasion impossible.

Ice spread from the impact point, crystallizing water on the Turtle Pokémon's shell, freezing its movements, encasing it in a prison of its own element turned against it.

Wartortle collapsed, frozen solid.

"Wartortle is unable to battle! Winner of Battle Two: Kasumi Uzumaki!"

"Performance score: nine-point-five out of ten!"

The crowd erupted. The championship match had become the competition everyone hoped for, two Coordinators at the highest level, trading victories, neither able to dominate.

"One-one!" the announcer declared. "The series is tied! Three battles remain!"

Kasumi allowed herself a moment of relief before focusing on what came next. She'd won the battle, but the war continued.

May recalled Wartortle with the same care Kasumi had shown Butterfree, respect for partners who gave everything regardless of outcome.

"Good battle," May called across the arena.

"Likewise."

"But I'm not done."

"Neither am I."

The exchange carried competitive respect that transcended simple rivalry. Both Coordinators understood they were creating something special, a finals match that would be remembered for years.

In the stands, Sasuke watched with the focused intensity he usually reserved for his own battles.

She's adapting, he thought. Growing in real-time. That's what champions do.

The series was tied.

Everything remained possible.
