Evelyn's POV
I make it to the car before I shatter.
One second I'm walking. The next second I'm on my knees in Damien's garage, gasping for air that won't come. My chest feels like someone's crushing it with both hands.
They want to put Isabelle inside me.
Inside my body.
They want to erase me.
"Evelyn." Damien's voice sounds far away. "Breathe. You need to breathe."
I can't. The air won't go in. My vision goes spotty.
Strong arms lift me. Damien carries me into his penthouse and sets me on the couch. He kneels in front of me, his hands on my face.
"Look at me. Just look at me." His eyes are so blue, so steady. "Breathe when I breathe. In."
He takes a deep breath. I try to copy him but it comes out as a sob.
"That's okay. Try again. In."
This time a little air gets through.
"Out."
We breathe together until the crushing feeling eases. Until I can think again.
