Chapter 10 - A Quiet Storm

Most people grow slowly.

Arin did not.

He hid it.

One month passed.

To everyone else, Arin was nothing special.

He attended classes.

Trained with the Kinetic Cadre.

Sat in the dining hall with Kavya and Anjali.

Nodded to Ren when their paths crossed.

Ignored Hana's constant attempts to talk.

He looked normal.

Calm.

Unremarkable.

That was the lie.

The first change came three days after the evaluation.

Arin woke up in the middle of the night.

Not from pain.

From pressure.

A deep, steady force filled his chest, pushing outward.

Golden light leaked faintly through his skin, tracing slow patterns across his torso.

It wasn't violent.

It wasn't unstable.

It felt controlled.

Like something inside him was adjusting itself.

His breathing slowed.

His core expanded.

Not in size.

In density.

By the time the light faded, everything inside him felt different.

Smoother.

Sharper.

More complete.

Before sunrise, he checked his level.

M-SCALE: 6.5

Arin stared at it.

No flicker.

No instability.

It was real.

He said nothing to anyone.

The second change came two weeks later.

During training.

Nothing intense.

Just controlled sparring.

Arin was sitting at the edge of the field, catching his breath.

Listening.

Watching.

Then it happened.

A quiet shift.

Like something deep inside his chest moved into place.

Not a surge.

Not an explosion.

A lock turning.

That night, the golden lines appeared again.

More defined this time.

Precise.

Geometric.

They spread faintly across his chest, pulsing slowly in the dark.

He activated the scanner.

M6.8

M6.9

The number flickered.

Then dropped.

Not stable.

Not complete.

Arin exhaled slowly.

He was close.

Too close.

His fingers brushed the glowing lines.

They didn't feel like energy.

They felt structured.

Designed.

How long can I hide this?

Hana noticed first.

She found him in the meditation garden.

"You're different."

"I'm the same."

She shook her head.

"No. You feel different."

Arin frowned.

"I didn't say anything."

"You don't have to." She tapped her temple lightly. "Pressure speaks."

She leaned slightly closer.

"Every time I see you, it increases."

Arin stayed silent.

Hana smiled.

"Relax. I won't tell."

She pulled out a small candy and held it toward him.

"Secret for a secret?"

"I don't have secrets."

She laughed softly.

"Everyone says that."

She walked away like it didn't matter.

But Arin remained there longer than usual.

Thinking.

Ren never asked.

He only watched.

During training.

During meals.

From a distance.

One evening, Ren spoke.

"You're holding back."

Arin stopped walking.

"Not just strength," Ren continued.

"Something else."

Arin didn't respond.

Ren turned slightly.

"When you stop holding back…"

His eyes sharpened.

"I want to fight you."

Then he walked away.

Arin stood still for a moment.

Alexei was different.

He didn't stay silent.

He confronted.

After a lecture, he stepped in front of Arin.

"You don't belong here."

Arin looked at him.

Calm.

Steady.

For a moment, Alexei hesitated.

Then Arin walked past him.

Without saying anything.

That silence made it worse.

At the end of the fourth week, Voss called him.

Her office felt tight.

Like everything inside it had a purpose.

"You're not normal."

Arin didn't deny it.

She turned her screen toward him.

His data.

Spikes.

Short.

Unnatural.

"Your output exceeds your level," she said.

"Only for moments."

Arin stayed calm.

"Maybe the system is wrong."

"It isn't."

Silence filled the room.

"I'm not reporting this."

Arin's chest tightened slightly.

"Not yet."

She leaned forward.

"When it happens again…"

A short pause.

"I'll be watching."

He left without another word.

That night, he sat alone in his room.

The sword rested across his lap.

Silent.

Still.

"I don't know what I'm becoming."

No answer came.

Only a faint, steady presence.

Not guiding him.

Not warning him.

Just there.

The next morning, a message appeared on his wrist.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT CONFIRMED

Arin read the list.

Ren.

Hana.

Alexei.

Dmitri.

Maya.

Everyone who had noticed something.

Now placed together.

He lowered his hand slowly.

This wasn't random.

It was intentional.

Something was pushing him forward.

Faster than it should.

And something inside him…

was responding.
