Chapter 30 - The Way Out

The central column pulsed.

Dim light moved beneath its surface, slow and uneven. Not mechanical. Not stable.

Alive.

Arin looked away.

"Other exits?"

Ren was already moving along the wall, his hand brushing the surface, searching. He stopped.

"Here."

A seam. Almost invisible. Half-hidden behind a collapsed support beam.

Dmitri stepped forward and pushed.

The metal didn't move.

"Locked."

Hana approached slowly. She placed her palm against it.

Her expression changed immediately.

"There's something on the other side."

"Moving?" Maya asked.

Hana shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"It's just… there."

The pulse from the column deepened.

Stronger now.

Closer.

Arin glanced back at the main entrance. Still sealed.

No way back.

He turned.

"Then we make our own way out."

Ren found the weak point near the base of the wall.

A fracture line. Thin, but spreading.

"This wasn't reinforced."

Dmitri stepped beside him. His metal arms pressed against the surface.

"On three."

They pushed.

The wall groaned. Dust fell from above. The pulse behind them quickened, like something reacting.

Arin stepped in, adding his weight.

The hum inside his chest tightened, rising in response.

The wall cracked.

Then gave.

A narrow gap opened.

Dark. Tight.

Arin didn't hesitate.

He went first.

The passage beyond was different.

Rough.

Uneven.

Carved, not built.

The walls were damp. Cold. Ancient.

Hana stepped in behind him, her voice low.

"This wasn't part of the facility. They found it."

"Used it," Ren said. "To move people without being seen."

They moved forward.

The tunnel sloped upward. Water dripped somewhere in the dark. Every step echoed too far behind them.

Then—

A sound.

Behind them.

Slow.

Heavy.

Footsteps.

Arin stopped.

Everyone froze.

One step.

Another.

Then silence.

Hana's grip tightened on his arm.

"…Something followed us."

No one looked back.

They moved faster.

The tunnel narrowed.

The walls pressed closer. The air felt thinner.

Arin could feel the weight of the earth above him. Around him.

The hum in his chest wasn't calm anymore.

It was alert.

Watching.

Ren stopped at a split.

Two tunnels.

Both dark. Both silent.

"Which way?" Maya asked.

Hana closed her eyes.

Her breathing slowed.

"…Left."

"What do you feel?" Arin asked.

"Air. Movement. Not still like the other path."

That was enough.

They took left.

The tunnel opened.

Not outside.

A chamber.

Small. Circular.

A single chair stood in the center.

Empty.

Wires hung from it, swaying slightly, though there was no wind.

They pulsed faintly.

The same rhythm as the column.

Maya took a step forward.

Then stopped.

"There's something here."

Arin felt it too.

Before he saw it.

A presence.

Standing just beyond the edge of light.

Then—

A figure.

Still.

Watching.

No movement. No sound.

Just there.

Arin's hand went to his blade.

The figure didn't react.

Hana's voice dropped to a whisper.

"…It's not like the others."

Ren shifted slightly, placing himself between it and Maya.

"Then what is it?"

No answer.

The figure tilted its head.

Slow.

Unnatural.

Then it took a step back.

Not retreating.

Inviting.

The darkness swallowed it.

Gone.

Arin moved forward instantly.

Hana grabbed him.

"Don't."

He stopped.

"It wants you to follow," she said.

Silence filled the chamber.

The wires continued their faint pulse.

Like a heartbeat that didn't belong to anything alive.

Ren searched the walls quickly.

"Here."

A ladder.

Old. Rusted. Bolted into the stone.

It went up.

Dmitri tested it.

It held.

Arin grabbed the first rung.

Climbed.

The shaft was tight.

Each movement scraped against metal. The air thinned with every step.

Then—

Light.

Faint. Grey.

He pushed against a metal grate.

It resisted.

Then gave.

Arin pulled himself out.

Cold air hit his face.

The sky stretched above him, dull and colorless.

Ruins spread in every direction.

Open.

Empty.

Safe.

For now.

He turned and reached down.

One by one, he pulled them up.

Hana came up pale, her breathing uneven. Maya followed, still shaking. Dmitri climbed out in silence.

Ren came last.

He paused for a second at the opening.

Then pulled the grate shut.

Sealing the darkness below.

They stood there for a moment.

No one spoke.

Then they moved.

The transport was untouched.

Ramp open.

Waiting.

Arin checked inside.

Empty.

No signs of intrusion.

Hana stopped near the entrance, looking back at the ground they had come from.

"They didn't try to stop us."

Arin followed her gaze.

The sealed grate.

The ruins.

The silence.

"No," he said quietly.

"They didn't need to."

The transport lifted.

The ruins shrank beneath them.

Disappearing into dust and distance.

Inside, no one spoke.

Arin sat by the window.

Hana sat across from him, hands still, eyes distant.

After a long silence, she spoke.

"The one in the chamber…"

Arin didn't look at her.

"It wasn't afraid."

A pause.

"It was waiting."

The clouds swallowed the ground.

The world below vanished.

Arin touched the crystal at his neck.

Warm.

Steady.

Not reacting.

But not quiet either.

"They know," he said.

Hana didn't ask what he meant.

"They took Lina because of me."

Silence.

No one disagreed.

The transport continued forward.

Through empty sky.

Toward something that had already begun.
