The transport touched down as the sky shifted from grey to something darker.
No one spoke during the descent.
The silence sat heavy in the cabin. Not empty. Not calm. It carried everything they had seen… and everything they didn't understand.
Arin sat with his back to the wall.
His fingers rested lightly against the crystal at his neck.
Warm.
Steady.
Lina's heartbeat.
Still there.
The ramp lowered.
"Voss stood waiting at the landing pad, a tablet in her hand, the live feed from their mission still active."
She stood apart from the medics, Her gaze moved across each of them, measuring… pausing on Arin just a second longer.
"Report."
Arin walked past her.
"Later."
The corridor to Lina's room was empty.
Too quiet.
Even the air felt still.
His footsteps echoed, but he didn't slow.
The door slid open.
Nothing had changed.
White walls. White sheets. Machines humming in soft rhythm.
And Lina.
She lay exactly as before. Still. Silent. Breathing.
Arin stepped closer and sat beside her.
He took her hand.
Warm.
Almost normal.
"I found them," he said quietly.
No response.
"The place they were taking you."
The monitor continued its slow rhythm.
"It's bigger than we thought. More sites. More people." His voice lowered. "They knew I was coming."
His grip tightened slightly.
"The one in the tunnel… it wasn't lost. It was waiting."
Silence.
"I'm going to find out why."
Hana stood at the doorway.
She hadn't made a sound.
"They want to debrief us."
Arin didn't look away from Lina.
Hana stepped inside slowly, her arms wrapped around herself.
"The second site… it wasn't like the first. The tunnels, the structure… it was old. Older than the cities."
Arin finally looked at her.
"They didn't build it," she continued. "They found it. And they're using it."
"For what?"
Hana hesitated.
"I don't know. But it wasn't just a facility." Her voice dropped. "It felt like a center. Like everything connects there."
A pause.
"And that thing in the tunnel…"
Arin's eyes sharpened.
"It wasn't wandering," she said. "It was placed there."
Silence thickened.
"Waiting for me," Arin finished.
Hana didn't deny it.
The debriefing room felt smaller than before.
Same white walls. Same table.
But now it felt like something was closing in.
Voss stood at the head.
Ren sat still, arms crossed.
Maya looked tired, her hands resting over her kit.
Dmitri leaned near the door, silent as ever.
Arin didn't sit.
"Tell me everything," Voss said.
He did.
The chairs. The empty rows.
The central column.
The second chamber.
The figure.
The way it watched… and stepped back.
When he finished, the room stayed quiet.
Too quiet.
"The second site wasn't on any of our scans," Voss said slowly.
"It was hidden," Hana replied. "Deep. Shielded. Old."
Voss's fingers tapped once against the table.
"Then this isn't recent," she said.
"No," Hana whispered. "It's been there for a long time."
Voss looked at Arin.
"And the figure?"
Arin met her gaze.
"It wanted me to follow."
No one spoke.
Maya broke the silence.
"They let us leave."
Ren nodded slightly. "Transport untouched. Exit path open."
"A message," Maya said.
Voss's eyes narrowed.
"What kind of message?"
Arin answered quietly.
"That we're already part of it."
The air in the room shifted.
Subtle.
Unseen.
But everyone felt it.
Voss moved toward the window, looking out at the dim sky.
"The victims we've recovered…" she said, "they're not just drained."
She turned.
"They're changed."
Maya frowned. "Changed how?"
"We don't fully understand it." Voss's voice stayed controlled. "Their bodies stabilize. They survive. But something is missing."
Hana's voice was soft.
"A gap."
Voss nodded once.
"Yes."
Arin's jaw tightened. "And Lina?"
"She's different," Voss said. "She's the only one showing signs of recovery."
"Why?"
Silence.
For a moment… even Voss didn't have an answer.
"We don't know."
That was worse.
Dmitri spoke from the door.
"Then they'll come again."
The words landed heavy.
Arin didn't hesitate.
"Let them."
He returned to Lina's room.
Nothing had changed.
The machines hummed.
The light had dimmed.
She lay still.
He sat beside her again.
This time… he didn't speak.
He didn't need to.
His fingers wrapped around hers.
Warm.
Alive.
The crystal at his neck pulsed softly.
A quiet rhythm.
Not calm.
Not peaceful.
Waiting.
Arin watched her face.
Waiting for anything.
A movement.
A sign.
Nothing came.
But he didn't leave.
