Chapter 40 - Chapter 16 — Carry the Legacy

Golden sunlight streamed through the broken entrance of the bunker.

For the first time in what felt like an eternity...

There was peace.

No whispers.

No tremors.

No shadows rising from the First Gate.

Only silence.

Dean stood before the Seventh Chain.

The Covenant Blade rested quietly in his hands.

Its runes no longer glowed.

Its duty was complete.

Behind him, Ben stretched his sore shoulders.

"You know..."

He looked around the battered bunker.

"...I think this place has seen better days."

Dean smiled.

"Probably around the 1950s."

Ben laughed.

"Yeah... before we showed up."

Asterion approached the Keeper.

His celestial sword had vanished.

He no longer looked like a warrior.

Only an old guardian.

He stopped in front of Dean.

Then, to everyone's surprise...

He knelt.

The other two Watchers did the same.

Malach followed.

Finally...

Kaelor, despite his injuries, placed one knee on the stone floor.

Dean looked at them, confused.

"Uh..."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"...Guys?"

Asterion lowered his head.

"For thousands of years..."

He spoke with quiet respect.

"...the Keepers protected the Gate."

He looked up.

"Today..."

A small smile crossed his face.

"...a Winchester protected the Keepers."

Dean was speechless.

Kaelor slowly removed a silver medallion from around his neck.

At its center was an ancient symbol:

Seven interlocked chains surrounding a single blue star.

He placed it in Dean's hand.

"The Sigil of the First Keepers."

Dean examined it.

It felt warm.

Alive.

"What does it do?"

Kaelor smiled.

"Nothing."

Ben raised an eyebrow.

"...Seriously?"

Kaelor chuckled.

"It is a reminder."

He looked at Dean.

"Power fades."

"Legends are forgotten."

"But symbols..."

He gently closed Dean's hand around the medallion.

"...inspire those who come after."

Hours later...

The four guardians stood outside the ruined farmhouse.

Or rather...

What remained of it.

The Impala waited patiently beneath the morning sun.

Covered in dust.

Scratched.

But beautiful as ever.

Dean ran a hand across the hood.

"Still with us, Baby."

Ben smiled.

"She always will be."

Dean opened the driver's door.

Before climbing inside, he looked back at Asterion.

"What happens now?"

The Watcher looked toward the horizon.

"We rebuild."

Malach nodded.

"The Gate will never be left unguarded again."

Dean smiled.

"Good."

Ben climbed into the passenger seat.

The familiar smell of old leather and engine oil filled the cabin.

Dean inserted the keys.

The engine roared to life.

VROOOOM...

Both of them smiled instinctively.

Some sounds never changed.

Ben leaned back in his seat.

"So..."

Dean looked at him.

"...where to?"

Dean reached into the glove compartment.

Something slid forward.

A cassette.

Old.

Its label had faded with time.

But one word was still readable.

Dean.

Not his name.

His uncle's.

Dean frowned.

"I don't remember seeing this before."

He slipped the cassette into the player.

A burst of static filled the car.

Then...

A familiar voice.

Older.

Confident.

Full of life.

Dean Winchester.

"Well... if you're hearing this, then Baby's still on the road."

Dean and Ben looked at each other in disbelief.

The recording continued.

"Guess that means somebody did something right."

A small laugh.

"Listen... if you're driving this car, you've already figured out the important part."

A pause.

"Monsters never disappear."

Another pause.

"Neither do good people."

Dean's eyes remained fixed on the road ahead.

The recording ended with one final sentence.

"Take care of her... and she'll take care of you."

The cassette clicked.

Silence filled the Impala.

Ben looked out the window.

Then smiled.

"Ready?"

Dean placed the medallion on the dashboard.

Started driving.

The Impala rolled onto the open highway.

The camera slowly pulled away.

The black car became smaller and smaller against the endless ribbon of asphalt stretching toward the horizon.

The sun climbed higher.

A new hunt waited somewhere down that road.

Because evil would always return.

And so would the Winchesters.

EPILOGUE

Some stories end.

Others become legends.

This was never the story of Sam Winchester.

Nor of Dean Winchester.

It was the story of what they left behind.

A legacy is not measured by the battles won.

Nor by the monsters defeated.

It is measured by those who choose to keep fighting.

As long as the Impala roared down forgotten highways...

As long as hunters answered the call...

As long as someone stood between humanity and the darkness...

The Winchester Legacy...

Would never truly end.
