Chapter 39 - Chapter 15 — The Fall of the Nameless

The blue light of the Covenant Blade filled the chamber.

The Nameless retreated one step.

Only one.

But for a being that had existed before Heaven itself...

One step was enough.

Asterion noticed it immediately.

His silver eyes widened.

"...He can be driven back."

Kaelor slowly nodded.

"Not by power."

He looked at Dean.

"...By the oath."

Dean frowned.

"You're going to have to stop talking in riddles."

Kaelor smiled faintly.

"The Seventh Chain does not answer to strength."

He pointed toward Ben.

"It answered to your choice."

Dean looked at his friend.

Ben shrugged.

"I wasn't letting you hug fake-Sam."

Dean laughed.

"Fair enough."

The Nameless raised one shadowed hand.

The abyss beneath the Gate erupted.

Hundreds of chains burst upward, tearing through the chamber.

The bunker shook violently.

Bookshelves collapsed.

Ancient artifacts crashed to the floor.

Asterion charged first.

His celestial blade cleaved through the nearest chains in a storm of white fire.

Malach traced glowing sigils in the air.

Walls of blue energy rose around the remaining seals.

Kaelor stood before the Gate itself.

Both hands pressed against the ancient stone.

His body began to glow.

Dean looked at him.

"What are you doing?"

Kaelor didn't turn around.

"Buying you time."

The Nameless laughed.

"Time..."

Its crimson eyes fixed on Kaelor.

"...is all you have ever done."

With a single gesture—

A massive chain pierced Kaelor's chest.

Ben shouted.

"KAELOR!"

The ancient guardian staggered.

Blood unlike anything human—silver, glowing like liquid starlight—fell onto the stone floor.

Yet he didn't move.

He tightened his grip on the Gate.

Holding it closed.

Dean ran toward him.

"Don't!"

Kaelor shouted.

For the first time, there was anger in his voice.

"Finish what we started!"

Dean stopped.

Every instinct told him to help.

But he remembered his uncle's words during the trial.

"The people we'd die for."

Sometimes...

The hardest choice wasn't saving everyone.

It was trusting them.

Dean slowly raised the Covenant Blade.

The symbols carved into its steel shone brighter than ever before.

The six remaining celestial chains answered.

Blue light raced across every link.

The Seventh Chain glowed.

Its crimson crack pulsed violently.

The Nameless roared.

"NO!"

It surged toward Dean like a tidal wave of living darkness.

Ben stepped beside him.

He loaded one final shell into his shotgun.

CLICK.

Dean looked sideways.

"You know that won't kill it."

Ben smiled.

"Didn't bring it to kill."

Dean grinned.

"Then why?"

Ben pumped the shotgun.

"Because every Winchester deserves someone covering their back."

Dean looked at him.

For just a second.

Then nodded.

"...Thanks, brother."

Ben smiled.

He didn't correct him.

The Nameless struck.

Ben opened fire.

The blast didn't wound the creature—

But it forced the shadows apart for a single heartbeat.

One opening.

One chance.

Dean ran.

The Covenant Blade burned brighter than the sun.

He leaped across the broken platform.

Straight toward the Seventh Chain.

The Nameless realized too late what Dean intended.

It lunged forward.

Crimson claws reached for him.

Dean ignored them.

Instead of attacking the creature...

He drove the Covenant Blade into the Seventh Chain.

The world stopped.

Silence.

Then—

Every celestial chain erupted with blinding blue light.

The Gate sealed itself.

One lock after another.

The abyss screamed.

The Nameless let out a roar unlike anything the world had ever heard.

Its body began to crack.

The shadows surrounding it shattered into fragments of crimson light.

It reached toward Dean one last time.

Not with hatred.

With desperation.

"You do not know..."

Its voice broke apart.

"...what you have imprisoned..."

Then...

It was gone.

The Gate slammed shut.

The Seventh Chain healed.

The crimson crack vanished completely.

The Covenant Blade extinguished.

Silence returned.

The bunker stood still.

For several long seconds, nobody moved.

Then Ben looked around.

He cleared his throat.

"...So..."

Dean turned toward him.

Ben smiled.

"...Does this mean we finally get a vacation?"

Dean laughed.

A real laugh.

The first in what felt like forever.

"You know hunters don't get vacations."

Ben sighed dramatically.

"I hate this job."

Asterion smiled.

Malach chuckled quietly.

Even Kaelor, despite his wounds, laughed softly.

For the first time in centuries...

The First Gate was silent.

Outside...

Morning sunlight broke through the clouds.

The storm was over.

Or so they believed...
