Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: The Foreclosure

Three years ago.

The hospital room smelled of bleach and dying magic.

Fourteen-year-old Yuto sat in a plastic chair, holding his older sister's hand. Rin was incredibly pale, her skin flaking off into tiny, glowing blue pixels of data. She wasn't sick with a human disease. She was suffering from [Code Default].

"Yuto," Rin whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the cheap life-support machines. "Don't... don't look at the screen."

Yuto looked. Hovering above Rin's bed was a glowing red System prompt.

[Debt Outstanding: 50,000 Vita-Fragments.] [Interest Rate: 12% daily.] [Action: Repossessing Host Vitality to cover minimum payments.]

Rin had been a promising Hunter. She had borrowed a Silver Healing Core from the Ouroboros Guild to save their parents after a slum raid. But the Tower's economy was rigged. The monsters in the lower floors never dropped enough to cover the daily interest.

The Guild didn't just break your legs when you couldn't pay. The Babel System itself was legally bound to extract the debt directly from your soul.

"I'll go to the Tower," young Yuto cried, his hands gripping her fading, pixelating fingers. "I'll farm the scrap-slimes. I can get fifty thousand! Just hold on!"

"No," Rin smiled weakly, coughing up a spatter of glowing blue dust. "The Tower... is a trap, Yuto. They give you just enough power... to make you think you can win. But the house always wins. If you ever Awaken... promise me. Never take their loans. Never spend what they give you immediately. Hold it... hold it until you can buy your own freedom."

A man in a grey suit with a glowing golden eye for a face stepped into the hospital room. An Auditor.

"Time is up, Debtor 441-A," the Auditor said monotonously. "Initiating final repossession."

Rin's body dissolved entirely into light, flying into the Auditor's briefcase.

Yuto fell to his knees, screaming. But as the Auditor turned to leave, a prompt appeared in front of the sobbing boy.

[System Notification: You are the next of kin. You have inherited Debtor 441-A's remaining debt: 12,000 Vita-Fragments.] [Will you accept the standard 100-year indentured servitude contract? (Y/N)]

Yuto stopped crying. He stared at the glowing blue prompt. He felt a rage so cold, so absolute, that it fundamentally altered his soul.

The System demanded he pay. It demanded he participate in the infinite cycle of spending, fighting, and dying for their entertainment and energy.

No. Yuto didn't click Y. He didn't click N.

He reached out, grabbed the holographic prompt with his bare, human hands, and crushed it.

[CRITICAL ERROR: HOST HAS DIGESTED A FINANCIAL CONTRACT.] [Anomaly born. Unique Skill Awakened: THE VAULT.] [Description: The Host's soul has become an absolute vacuum. Nothing enters the market. Nothing exits. The universe owes you interest.]

Present Day. Floor 14 Colosseum.

Yuto stood in the frozen arena, staring at the Auditor descending from the glitching red sky. The memories of his sister's death fueled the agonizing, beautiful heat of the Stigma burning on his right hand.

"You're going to repossess my Vault?" Yuto asked, a dark, terrifying smirk crossing his face.

The Auditor pointed his pale finger at Yuto. [Override Command: Delete Vault Contents.]

A beam of pure, administrative deletion code fired directly at Yuto's chest. It was an attack that bypassed all stats, armor, and magic. It was the power of a developer deleting a file.

The beam hit Yuto's chest—and instantly vanished.

The Auditor froze. The golden halo replacing its face spun frantically. [Error. Error. File cannot be deleted. Object mass is too dense.]

"Your system is flawed," Yuto said, taking a step forward. The sound of his boot hitting the stone sent a localized earthquake through the paused reality. "You built a universe based on compound interest, but you never planned for someone who absolutely refused to spend a single dime."

Yuto raised his glowing right fist.

"I'm not climbing your Tower anymore," Yuto stated, his voice ringing with the authority of a Transcendent Ash-Lord. "I'm not playing your game. I'm taking my savings..."

Yuto drove his fist directly upward, punching the fabric of the paused reality itself.

"...and I'm buying the Bank."

The Colosseum didn't shatter. The entire concept of Floor 14 shattered. The red grid in the sky ripped wide open, sucking Yuto, his frozen party, the Auditor, and the screaming Shion upward, bypassing the middle floors entirely and shooting them straight into the chaotic, unrendered space between the dimensions of the Babel System.
