Dugu Yan didn't stand on ceremony with Gu Xuan; after giving him a sweet kiss, she directly tucked the Inner Core into her soul tool.
Although Gu Xuan's heart was firm, he was currently in Slaughter City. Despite his constant self-restraint and the aid of meditation pills, he almost lost his composure just then. After all, Slaughter City was designed to constantly stir up one's negative emotions.
Gu Xuan gave Dugu Yan a look, swallowed another heart-calming pill, and then resumed their advance.
The temperature continued to rise, and the dark red liquid flowing in the abyss on either side became clearer as the light intensified. As they moved forward, the scorching heat they endured grew steadily.
What was even harder to adapt to was a peculiar atmosphere in the air. An oppressive feeling deep within their hearts became increasingly apparent, causing their own killing intent to release even more recklessly, and feelings of agitation began to surface.
Gu Xuan knew this was normal. Fortunately, he and Dugu Yan could rely on their own killing intent to ward off this specific scorching heat. However, the external heat acted like a root reaching for the killing intent within them; yet, they couldn't stop releasing their intent, or they would surely be consumed by the horrific evil energy within the Hell Road.
Since entering this path, the two had been constantly influenced by its atmosphere. While killing intent could block the evil energy, it couldn't filter it completely. Gu Xuan was aware that passing the Hell Road required not just strength, but speed. The longer they stayed, the deeper the influence of the evil energy. Once the mind became disordered, they might never walk out.
Thinking of this, Gu Xuan spoke softly to Dugu Yan, "Stay calm. We're speeding up."
With those words, Gu Xuan pulled Dugu Yan into his arms once more. His Sword Dragon Eight Wings unfurled, and he streaked forward. He only chose to fly now because he knew there would likely be no more obstacles blocking the path. Still, he didn't relax; it was better to be safe than sorry.
As their speed increased, so did their proximity to the bottom of the abyss. The air grew noticeably hotter, and their vision blurred. In the abyss flanking the narrow path, the dark red liquid churned—it was indeed blood, yet it possessed the temperature of magma and emitted a heavy metallic stench.
As the temperature climbed and the blood plasma rose on both sides, Gu Xuan knew the exit was not far off. Half an hour later, with their minds constantly stimulated by frantic killing intent, the two finally saw the exit.
By now, even Gu Xuan was soaked in sweat. It wasn't just from the ambient temperature, but from the endless killing intent and the physical presence of Dugu Yan in his arms. Even he had to exert immense effort to resist the urge of his own desires fueled by the killing intent.
Dugu Yan's condition in his arms wasn't great either. Her skin was flushed deep red, like a ripe apple that would burst with juice at a single bite. Fortunately, the exit was in sight.
The exit was unmistakable: a white light condensed into an elliptical curtain. That was the end of their journey. They were currently a thousand meters away from it. Here, the blood plasma gathered into a small lake, blocking their path. Bubbles churned in the plasma; the thousand-meter distance looked like an insurmountable chasm to anyone else. Of course, this didn't apply to Gu Xuan—he could fly.
Gu Xuan glanced at Dugu Yan. Her state was poor; her released killing intent was starting to flicker as she poured all her effort into resisting the invasion of evil energy.
Gu Xuan gently stroked her forehead and whispered, "The exit is here. We'll be out of here in a moment."
In his arms, Dugu Yan looked like a ripe fruit ready for the picking. Hearing his voice, she managed a weak smile. "Thank you for the hard work, Xiao Xuan."
In truth, throughout the journey on the Hell Road, Dugu Yan hadn't needed to exert much effort, relying almost entirely on Gu Xuan. So, while she looked to be in a bad state, she wasn't as exhausted as she appeared.
Gu Xuan smiled and turned his gaze forward. A thousand meters ahead, two hundred meters up, sat an exit three meters in diameter, radiating a brilliance like moonlight. Gu Xuan didn't fly straight in; reality wasn't a novel, and there could be an ambush.
He held his position while two dragon swords shot out from his back toward the opening. Only after confirming there was no danger did he carry Dugu Yan through the air. Soon, they reached the opening. They suddenly felt the killing intent surrounding their bodies being pulled by a unique force.
Casting one last glance at the blood pool below, Gu Xuan, holding Dugu Yan, surged into the white light curtain with a "shua" sound.
On the other side, in a vast, dark room, the Slaughter King reclined on his massive chair. His eyes flashed with red light. He whispered in the darkness, "Are these the ones the higher-ups favor? The Hell Road seemed far too simple for them." He let out a cold snort soon after. "Hmph! Two more Death Gods. I wonder if this is a blessing or a curse..."
...
Everything around them seemed to be shifting. The moment Gu Xuan and Dugu Yan surged into the white light, they felt as if their bodies had entered a special world.
The surroundings were a snowy-white void. Gu Xuan's external soul bone was restricted by a unique power, forcing it back into his body, and Dugu Yan was pulled from his embrace. In this white expanse, one couldn't use a shred of strength; the only sensation was bone-chilling cold.
It felt as if countless shards of ice were condensing toward his body while simultaneously being released from within. In this white void, Gu Xuan endured the terrifying pain alone. He tried to reach for Dugu Yan's hand, but his grasp met only emptiness; he could see nothing, touch nothing.
Worry filled his heart, but he knew that since he was still alive, Dugu Yan was likely not in mortal danger.
A coldness that shouldn't have been there appeared. It wasn't a real change in temperature, but a chill brought by killing intent. Now, the purest killing intent rapidly invaded Gu Xuan's body. Each invasion made him tremble.
As the coldness began to numb his heart, his senses started to fade along with his consciousness. At that moment, Gu Xuan understood that this was the formation of the Death God Domain. Indeed, this was a domain—a field condensed from killing intent. Within this void, he felt like rootless duckweed.
The power of a domain went without saying. In a sense, the Death God Domain was far stronger than most, ranking among the most powerful of its kind. Dugu Yan was currently experiencing the exact same sensations; her state was fundamentally no different from Gu Xuan's.
