Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Fragments

Sleep refused to come.

Alexander stared at the ceiling, the hospital room dim except for the glow of city lights beyond the window.

Vivian had left an hour ago.

Daniel had gone home.

But the quiet did nothing to ease the chaos inside his mind.

He closed his eyes.

And saw her.

Not Vivian.

Elena.

Standing by the door.

Eyes full of something he couldn't name.

Pain.

Hope.

Patience.

"I'm not fighting for you… I'm waiting for you."

Her words replayed endlessly.

Alexander turned onto his side with a frustrated sigh.

Why did her voice linger?

Why did her absence feel louder than Vivian's presence?

He squeezed his eyes shut.

And then—

Another flash.

Rain pouring heavily.

A woman running toward him.

Her hair soaked, dress clinging to her frame.

"You idiot," she was crying and laughing at the same time. "You scared me."

His own arms wrapped around her instinctively.

"I told you not to run in the rain."

"But you were hurt."

The memory snapped away.

Alexander jerked upright, breathing hard.

His hand trembled as he pressed it against his chest.

That wasn't imagination.

That was real.

And the woman in the memory…

Was Elena.

Morning arrived with pale sunlight filtering through the curtains.

Alexander hadn't slept.

Dark circles lined his eyes as he sat quietly, lost in thought.

A knock sounded.

"Come in."

The door opened to reveal Elena.

She stepped inside cautiously, as if uncertain of her welcome.

"I brought breakfast," she said, holding up a small container.

Alexander watched her approach.

Something about the gesture felt familiar.

Routine.

Domestic.

Intimate.

"You didn't have to," he said.

"I know."

She set the food down anyway.

Silence settled between them — less hostile than before, but still fragile.

Alexander spoke first.

"I remembered something."

Elena's hand froze mid-motion.

Her heart pounded.

"What was it?"

"Rain," he said. "You running toward me."

Elena's breath caught.

"That was… two years ago," she whispered. "You got into a minor accident. I left a meeting and came straight to you."

Alexander studied her face.

The way her eyes softened while recalling it.

The way her lips curved faintly.

"You were crying," he said.

Elena smiled weakly.

"I always cry when you get hurt."

The simplicity of her answer hit him harder than any elaborate declaration could.

Alexander looked down at his hands.

"I don't understand this," he admitted quietly. "Vivian is my past. But you…"

He trailed off.

Elena waited.

"You feel like something unfinished," he finished.

The words lingered in the air.

Elena swallowed.

"Maybe because we are."

Their eyes met.

A silent current passed between them.

But the moment shattered as the door opened.

Vivian walked in, her expression faltering when she saw them alone together.

"Oh," she said lightly. "I didn't realize you had company."

Alexander noticed the subtle tension immediately.

"It's fine," he said.

Vivian approached, her gaze flickering to the breakfast Elena brought.

"You didn't eat the hospital food?"

Alexander shrugged.

"Elena brought this."

The statement felt oddly significant.

Vivian's smile didn't reach her eyes.

"That's thoughtful."

Elena straightened.

"I should go."

She turned toward the door.

But Alexander spoke.

"Wait."

Both women looked at him.

Alexander hesitated only a second before asking,

"Will you come back later?"

The question was directed at Elena.

Vivian's fingers tightened around her purse strap.

Elena blinked, surprised.

"If you want me to."

Alexander nodded.

"I do."

Vivian felt the shift.

Small.

But undeniable.

Elena gave a soft nod.

"I'll come."

She left the room moments later, but the atmosphere remained altered.

Vivian sat beside Alexander, forcing calm into her voice.

"You're getting attached to her out of obligation."

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he stared at the doorway again.

"No," he said eventually.

"This doesn't feel like obligation."

Vivian's heart dropped.

Alexander leaned back against the pillows, Elena's memory replaying in his mind — rain, laughter, warmth.

And for the first time since losing his memories…

He felt like he was beginning to find them again.
