Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The missing piece

The hospital corridor was unusually quiet that evening.

Alexander stood by the window, arms folded loosely, gaze unfocused as the city lights flickered beyond the glass.

Elena didn't come.

The thought repeated like a quiet echo in his mind.

It shouldn't matter.

She had her own life.

Her own responsibilities.

And yet…

Something about her absence felt wrong.

Incomplete.

Alexander ran a hand through his hair in frustration.

Why was he waiting for someone he didn't even remember loving?

A knock sounded behind him.

"Mr. Hale?"

Daniel stepped into the room.

"The doctor said your discharge could be moved forward if your tests remain stable tomorrow."

Alexander nodded absently.

"That's fine."

Daniel hesitated.

"Is there anything else you need?"

Alexander's answer came before he could reconsider.

"Have you spoken to Elena today?"

Daniel blinked, surprised.

"No, sir."

Alexander looked back out the window.

"…Alright."

Daniel left, but curiosity lingered on his face.

Because Alexander Hale was not a man who asked about people casually.

Especially not repeatedly.

At the Hale mansion, Elena sat curled on the couch, untouched tea growing cold in her hands.

The silence of the house pressed in on her.

Normally, evenings meant hospital visits.

Quiet conversations.

Watching Alexander sleep.

But tonight…

She stayed home.

Just as Vivian suggested.

Just as logic advised.

Just as self-protection demanded.

And yet the decision felt heavier than expected.

Her phone rested beside her.

Screen dark.

No messages.

No calls.

Elena let out a soft, humorless laugh.

Of course he wouldn't call.

Why would he?

To him, she was still a stranger.

But to herself…

He was everything.

A sudden memory surfaced.

Alexander standing in this very living room months ago, loosening his tie after work.

"You wait up for me every night," he had said.

Elena smiled faintly at the recollection.

"You always come home late."

"And you always stay."

Her chest tightened.

She placed the tea down and hugged her knees, blinking back tears.

Tonight…

She didn't stay.

The next morning arrived with clear skies and quiet determination.

Alexander had barely slept.

By the time the doctor finished his rounds, Alexander had already made up his mind.

"I want to leave today," he said.

Dr. Morgan raised a brow.

"Your tests look good, but rest is still important."

"I'll rest at home."

The doctor studied him briefly before nodding.

"Alright. We'll begin discharge procedures."

Alexander exhaled, relief mingling with anticipation.

Because home meant answers.

And maybe…

It meant Elena.

The Hale mansion buzzed softly as staff prepared for Alexander's return.

Elena stood at the entrance hall, fingers twisting together unconsciously.

Mrs. Dalton noticed.

"Madam, are you nervous?"

Elena gave a small smile.

"A little."

But nervous didn't capture it.

Hope did.

Fear did.

Longing did.

The sound of a car pulling into the driveway made her heart jump.

Elena straightened instinctively.

The front door opened moments later.

Alexander stepped inside.

For a second, everything stilled.

The air.

The movement.

Her breath.

Alexander's gaze met hers immediately.

And once again, that strange pull tightened between them.

Home.

The word surfaced in his mind without permission.

"You're back," Elena said softly.

Alexander nodded.

"I am."

Silence lingered, but it wasn't uncomfortable.

It felt… expectant.

Alexander glanced around the mansion — elegant, warm, lived-in.

But his attention returned to her.

"You didn't come yesterday."

The quiet accusation surprised them both.

Elena swallowed.

"I thought you needed space."

Alexander frowned slightly.

"Did you want to come?"

The question caught her off guard.

"Yes," she admitted.

The honesty settled between them.

Alexander stepped closer.

"Then why didn't you?"

Elena hesitated only a moment.

"Because loving someone sometimes means stepping back when they don't know they need you."

Alexander stared at her.

Her words didn't feel dramatic.

They felt true.

And truth had weight.

A faint memory flickered again.

Elena standing by a doorway.

Watching him leave for work.

Smiling softly even when he didn't notice.

Alexander's chest tightened.

"You were here," he murmured.

Elena blinked.

"What?"

"Before the accident. In moments I didn't see."

Elena's eyes shimmered.

"I was."

A quiet understanding passed between them.

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"I don't like that you stayed away."

Elena's heart skipped.

"Why?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Because he didn't fully understand it himself.

But he knew one thing.

"When you're not around," he said quietly, "it feels like something is missing."

The words hung in the air.

Fragile.

Powerful.

Elena's breath trembled.

For the first time since his accident—

Alexander wasn't remembering her.

He was feeling her.

And maybe…

That mattered even more.
