Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The truth between us

The entire hall froze.

Elena stood in the center of the charity banquet, her fingers trembling slightly around the microphone. Hundreds of eyes stared at her. Cameras flashed. Whispers spread like wildfire.

Behind her, Alexander's voice cut through the silence.

"Elena."

Just her name.

But this time… it didn't sound distant.

It didn't sound unfamiliar.

It sounded raw.

She slowly turned.

He was standing.

Not composed. Not cold. Not calculating.

Just a man who looked like he had finally seen something he should have seen long ago.

Vivian's face had gone pale. "Alexander, don't do this. You're confused—"

"I remember," he said quietly.

Two words.

And Elena's heart stopped.

"You… what?" she whispered.

Alexander walked toward her, every step steady, deliberate. The crowd parted automatically, sensing something monumental unfolding.

"I remember the rain," he said, voice rough. "The night you waited outside my office for three hours because I skipped dinner again."

Elena's breath hitched.

"I remember the stupid pink cake you baked for my birthday when I said I didn't celebrate them."

Tears burned her eyes.

"I remember you falling asleep on my shoulder during that business trip because you hadn't slept in two days."

Each memory was like a thread stitching something broken back together.

"And I remember," his voice broke slightly, "signing divorce papers in anger… and you crying alone in the bedroom because you thought you weren't enough."

The hall was dead silent.

Elena's tears spilled freely now.

"You… you said you didn't remember anything," she whispered.

"I didn't," he admitted. "Not at first. But the more I tried to push you away, the more something felt wrong. Like I was rejecting something that belonged to me."

His eyes locked onto hers.

"You don't feel like a stranger, Elena. You feel like home."

Her knees almost gave out.

Vivian stepped forward, panic rising in her expression. "Alexander, think carefully. You and I—"

"There was never an 'us,' Vivian." His tone turned cold instantly. "There was nostalgia. That's all."

The words struck like a slap.

Vivian's composure cracked. "You're choosing her? After everything?"

"I'm choosing my wife."

The declaration echoed through the hall.

Elena's chest tightened painfully.

Wife.

Not stranger.

Not obligation.

Wife.

Alexander stopped in front of her. His hand lifted hesitantly, as if unsure he had the right to touch her.

"Elena… I can't undo the hurt I caused. I can't erase what I put you through after the accident."

He swallowed.

"But if you'll let me… I want to start again. Not because I pity you. Not because of guilt. But because I remember loving you."

The vulnerability in his voice shattered the last wall around her heart.

"You don't remember everything," she said softly.

"No," he admitted. "But I remember enough to know I was happiest when you were beside me."

Her mind screamed at her to protect herself.

To remember the coldness. The humiliation. The loneliness.

But her heart… traitorous and fragile… still loved him.

"Alexander," she whispered, "do you remember why we almost divorced the first time?"

He frowned slightly.

"Because you kept choosing work over me," she said. "Because I felt invisible."

Pain flickered in his eyes.

"And after the accident… I felt invisible again."

The crowd no longer mattered.

The cameras no longer mattered.

It was just them.

"I won't make promises I can't keep," he said. "But I will fight for you this time."

Her heart pounded.

Before she could answer—

A voice from the entrance cut sharply through the air.

"Mr. Hale!"

Everyone turned.

A middle-aged man in a security uniform rushed in, breathless.

"There's been an incident at Hale Group headquarters."

Alexander's expression hardened instantly. "What happened?"

"It's… financial. Someone leaked confidential documents to the press."

A murmur exploded through the hall.

Vivian's face drained of color.

Elena noticed.

And so did Alexander.

He slowly turned toward Vivian.

"You said you handled the files last week."

Vivian's lips parted. "I—I did. But—"

The security officer continued, "The leak came from an internal account registered under Ms. Vivian Carter."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Vivian staggered back. "That's impossible!"

But her shaking hands betrayed her.

Elena stared at her in disbelief.

"You… tried to destroy his company?"

Vivian's composure finally shattered. "If I couldn't have him, she wasn't going to either!"

Gasps filled the room.

Alexander's face turned glacial.

"Security."

Two guards stepped forward immediately.

Vivian looked at him desperately. "Alexander, I did it for us! For what we had!"

"We had nothing," he said flatly.

As security escorted her out, she screamed Elena's name in rage.

And then she was gone.

The hall buzzed with chaos, but Alexander's focus remained solely on Elena.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly. "You were right about her."

Elena felt emotionally exhausted.

Relieved. Overwhelmed. Terrified.

"Your company needs you," she said softly.

He shook his head.

"Not as much as I need to know your answer."

Her breath caught.

"Are you asking me to come back?"

"I'm asking you to give me another chance."

Her heart whispered yes.

Her pride whispered no.

And for the first time since the accident… she realized the decision was entirely hers.

Elena stepped closer.

Close enough to feel his warmth.

"I won't be forgotten again," she said firmly. "Not by your memory. Not by your priorities."

"You won't," he promised.

She searched his eyes for doubt.

She found none.

Slowly… carefully… she placed her hand in his.

"I'll stay," she whispered. "But this time, we build something stronger."

His grip tightened around her fingers as if he feared she would disappear.

"We will."

Outside the banquet hall, reporters screamed headlines.

Inside, two hearts chose to try again.

But as Alexander's phone vibrated in his pocket—

He didn't yet know that the leaked documents were only the beginning.

Because someone else had access to secrets far more dangerous than financial files.

And this time…

It wasn't Vivian.
