Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: The Island Trip

The first Monday after the weekend felt like the real return to routine.

The school hallways carried the familiar hum of lockers opening and closing, the soft chatter of students catching up after two quiet days, the faint scent of spring slipping through open windows.

Exams were behind them; the pressure had dissolved completely.

Classes had shifted back to normal rhythm—lectures, group discussions, occasional laughter when a teacher made an unexpected joke.

Jade arrived at her locker and found Rose already waiting, leaning against the metal door with her arms folded loosely.

Rose looked up as Jade approached, and the small, familiar smile that curved her lips made the morning feel instantly steadier.

"Morning,Jade " Rose said.

"Good Morning , Rose" Jade opened her locker, pulling out the books she needed for the day.

They walked to homeroom together, shoulders brushing now and then in the crowded hallway.

The usual announcements played over the intercom—club meetings, lost-and-found reminders—but the principal's voice cut in midway, calm and deliberate.

"Attention, students.

We have an announcement.

To celebrate the successful completion of mid-semester exams and to foster school spirit, the administration has organized a five-day school trip to Haven Bay Island.

The trip will take place next week, departing Monday morning and returning Friday evening.

It includes beach activities, nature walks, team-building games, and free time for relaxation.

Details—cost, permission forms, packing list—will be distributed in homeroom today.

We hope to see strong participation.

This is a chance to make memories together."

A ripple of excitement moved through the room.

Whispers turned to murmurs, then to eager questions.

Jade glanced at Rose.

Rose was already looking back at her, eyes wide with quiet surprise.

"Haven Bay Island?" Rose said softly.

Jade grinned.

"Five days. No classes.

Just… the ocean."

Rose's smile grew slowly—small at first, then brighter.

"I've never been on a school trip like that.

It sounds… nice."

The rest of the day passed in a haze of anticipation.

Teachers handed out permission slips and itineraries during every period.

The trip included ferry travel to Haven Bay Island, shared cabins, guided hikes along coastal trails, beach bonfires, and optional kayaking or swimming.

Students were encouraged to form groups of four to six for cabin assignments, though the school would balance them if needed.

At lunch Jade and Rose sat at their usual library table, permission slips spread between them.

Rose read the packing list aloud—swimsuit, sunscreen, light jacket for evenings, comfortable shoes—while Jade made mental notes of what she already owned.

"We should share a room together," Jade said without hesitation.

"If you want obviously."

Rose looked up, surprised for a second, then nodded.

"I'd like that."

They spent the rest of lunch filling out the forms—signatures, emergency contacts, dietary preferences.

Rose wrote "no shellfish" in the allergies section; Jade added "vegetarian but eats eggs and dairy."

They laughed quietly when Rose admitted she got seasick on boats sometimes, and Jade promised to bring ginger candies just in case.

After lunch they had P.E.—a casual outdoor session of frisbee and relay races.

Rose stayed near Jade the whole time, not because she needed to, but because it felt natural now.

When a particularly strong throw sent the frisbee sailing toward Rose, Jade stepped in front—casual, instinctive—catching it mid-air and tossing it back with a grin.

Rose gave her a small, grateful look.

"You're always doing that."

Jade shrugged, already jogging back into position.

"Its almost a habit."

The day ended with an assembly in the auditorium—principal going over trip rules, safety guidelines, and a slide show of last year's island photos: students laughing on the beach, roasting marshmallows around a fire, kayaking in clear water.

The room buzzed with anticipation.

As they filed out, Rose walked close to Jade, their arms brushing every few steps.

"I'm actually excited," Rose admitted quietly.

"I haven't been anywhere near the ocean since… Florida."

Jade glanced at her.

"Five days of vacation , that too in an island ? honestly it's feels like a dream and it's you first school trip !"

"Its also our first trip together"

The words were simple, but they landed softly, carrying more warmth than Rose probably intended.

Jade felt that familiar, steady bloom in her chest—quiet, persistent, growing a little more every day.

They reached the gates together.

Rose paused at the bus stop line.

"See you tomorrow?"

Jade nodded.

"Tomorrow then.

We can start planning what to pack."

Rose smiled—small, real, bright.

"I'd like that."

She turned toward the bus, braid swinging gently.

Jade watched her go until the crowd swallowed her silhouette.

On the walk home, Jade felt the permission slip folded in her pocket like a small promise.

Five days on Haven Bay Island.

Sun, sand, sea and Rose.

She smiled to herself as the spring breeze lifted her hair.

The trip was still a week away.

But already, it felt like the beginning of something she didn't want to end.
