Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: A Backstab from Talent

In Class 8 of Grade 1, a petite girl named He Yu was the first to take the test. She was a Water Mage. Before going on stage, she cried pitifully, tears streaming down her face, afraid that she would be expelled from Magic High School.

Homeroom teacher Xue Musheng believed her. Even all the boys in the class comforted and encouraged her.

Who would have thought that when she was tested, The whole class became the joke. According to the Star Sensing Stone's radiance, she reached A-level. Next year's class division would directly place her into the Seed Class.

Everyone was dumbfounded. She was a total magic schemer!

Fang Yu glanced at her and recognized the girl. Two years later, during the Bo City Disaster, she would single-handedly block a Black Vatican beast to save Zhang Xiaohou.

And die in the process.

It also solidified Zhang Xiaohou's determination to enlist in the army, eventually contributing to the rise of a powerful mage who would guard the nation's borders.

Next, Zhang Xiaohou took the stage. The Star Sensing Stone shone brilliantly, reaching A+ level, drawing admiration from the crowd.

At that moment, Zhang Xiaohou looked shy, yet his eyes were firm as he said, "Teacher, I want to take the second test magic release."

The examiner looked surprised. "Are you sure?"

"I know that if my ranking in the Annual Assessment is high, I'll get to use the Stardust Magic Tool longer. So I want to take the magic release test," Zhang Xiaohou said resolutely.

The Annual Assessment consisted not only of the Star Sensing Stone but also a second test's magic release. Generally speaking, the latter was prepared for only a handful of top students. Each year, only a few passed; very few students managed to master magic within a year.

Unfortunately, although Zhang Xiaohou had already grasped the Basic Tier Wind spell—Wind Track, due to excessive nervousness, he repeatedly failed to control his stars. The Star Path broke apart, and he was unable to complete the spell release.

He walked down, filled with dejection. Teacher Tang Yue, like a gentle older sister, comforted him. "It's alright. With your results, you can still enter the Seed Class."

"Teacher, I thought I had mastered it quite well. I didn't expect that just a little nervousness would cause my stars to collapse every time I tried to control them, forcing me to start over. Teacher, how are you able to release magic so effortlessly with just a wave of your hand?" Zhang Xiaohou asked.

"Naturally, through practice. Besides that, one's state of mind is also crucial. A qualified mage must not only have solid fundamentals but also a calm and steady mindset," Tang Yue replied with a smile.

Hearing this, Zhang Xiaohou nodded as if he half understood.

Before long it was Mu Bai's turn. With Mu He's persuasion, he had drawn the attention of the school's higher-ups and Mu Ningxue.

Next, Mu Bai achieved an S-level result. The Star Sensing Stone's brilliance illuminated the surroundings. He then easily released the first-level Basic Tier Ice spell—Ice Spread. A faint chill spread outward, freezing large patches of the ground.

The wooden dummy was frozen into an ice sculpture, sparkling crystal-clear under the sunlight.

The leaders were all shrewd. Knowing that Board Director Mu He was deliberately promoting him, they enthusiastically praised him.

Mu Bai was full of pride. He secretly glanced at Mu Ningxue to observe her reaction. What ignited his anger was that Mu Ningxue had never once looked at him, her gaze had been fixed on Mo Fan the entire time.

That bastard again.

He clenched his teeth inwardly. Later, he would make Mo Fan lose face. He signaled with his eyes to the assessment instructor beside him.

Next was Mo Fan's assessment. His first evaluation was B.

But then things took a turn. Tang Yue, sharp-eyed as ever, discovered that the Star Sensing Stone had been tampered with and had someone retrieve the hidden dark stone inside.

After retesting Mo Fan displayed astonishing magical talent.

Slapping everyone in the face.

The Mu Clan's leader of Bo City, Mu Zhuoyun, originally intended to invite Mo Fan to join the Mu Clan, only to be fiercely rebuked by him.

Enraged, Mu Zhuoyun directly sent his adopted son Yu Ang, who was in fact a member of the Black Vatican under Mu He to make a two-year agreement with Mo Fan.

At the coming-of-age ceremony after graduating from senior year, they would settle the score in battle. The loser would kneel and kowtow to the winner, publicly apologizing.

Watching this unfold, Fang Yu felt a strong sense of déjà vu.

He clearly understood why Mo Fan harbored hostility toward Mu Zhuoyun, it stemmed from the humiliation back then.

Fang Yu fell into thought.

"Two years from now?"

"After that duel ends, it will also signal the beginning of the first major storyline."

The Annual Assessment continued.

"Student Fang Yu," the teacher called.

Fang Yu nodded and stood up to take the test.

Mo Fan said in an annoyingly smug tone, "Old Fang, I'm rooting for you."

Fang Yu shot him an annoyed glare. "Like I need you to worry."

Fang Yu walked up to the Star Sensing Stone, placed his hand on it, and quickly entered a meditative state.

"S!"

"S!"

"S!"

Light overflowed, brilliance bursting outward. Without any surprise, the examiners shielded their eyes and awarded the highest score—S. The radiance was simply too intense; when they looked at the students, everything appeared doubled in afterimages.

The highest rating in the school's assessment was S. But everyone knew Fang Yu's Stardust magic energy was likely even higher than Mo Fan's and Mu Bai's.

"The result is truly unexpected!"

"I didn't expect there to be such an outstanding student!" Mu Zhuoyun exclaimed.

The scene fell silent.

Fang Yu looked at the examiner and asked, "Is that enough?"

"Huh?"

"Student Fang Yu, aren't you going to continue with the test?" the examiner asked.

"I won't. As long as I can enter the Seed Class, that's enough." Fang Yu shook his head.

He didn't want to attract too much attention. With the ice orb already present in his spiritual world, the Stardust Magic Tool was useless to him.

Moreover, Mu He the Black Vatican's Hujin Deacon was present. Revealing too much would immediately max out the danger level.

The students below and the examiners exchanged puzzled looks. Mu Ningxue glanced at Fang Yu in surprise. With his strength, he could clearly complete a spell release, yet he calmly said he wouldn't test further.

Fang Yu stepped down and walked to Mo Fan's side, patting him on the shoulder. "Well?"

"Not well. We'll compete again next time," Mo Fan said, clearly shaken.

He had planned to steal the spotlight today, yet it had been snatched away again.

To say he wasn't jealous would be a lie.

He felt secretly annoyed. If he hadn't been cultivating two elements, the strongest and most dazzling one here would've been him.

After a short while, Mu Zhuoyun's gaze fell on Fang Yu. Seeing such outstanding Ice Element talent, he wanted to recruit him into the Mu Clan. He walked up to Fang Yu.

"Student!"

"You're calling me?" Fang Yu raised his head to look at the tall, burly Mu Zhuoyun.

"The Mu Clan is a representative family of Ice Element magic. Your Ice talent is impressive, so I intend to invite you to join us."

"No." Fang Yu refused.

Two years later, when Bo City suffered the demon disaster, the Bo City Mu Clan would suffer heavy losses. Later, after Mu He was exposed, they would become like stray dogs.

Moreover, the Bo City Mu Clan was a dragon's lair and tiger's den. Calling it the Black Vatican's nest wouldn't be an exaggeration.

Joining them would be asking for death.

Mu Zhuoyun looked at Fang Yu, puzzled.

Earlier it had been Mo Fan. Now Fang Yu as well.

Had the Mu Clan lost its prestige? After all, in Bo City they were still considered a dominant force.

"You're still young. You don't understand the importance of resources. When you change your mind, you can come to the Mu Clan to find me," Mu Zhuoyun advised.

In Bo City, having such talent at this age was indeed remarkable.

However, without the backing resources of a family, no matter how talented one was, they would eventually realize how powerless it felt without resource support.

Simply grinding through effort alone no longer worked. Now it required both spending resources and relentless effort—the difficulty had increased by more than one level.

"Thank you for the offer, but I'll pass," Fang Yu refused again.

Seeing this, Mu Zhuoyun stopped persuading him. He had already shown sufficient sincerity. Being rejected, he wouldn't continue pressing the matter.

He was a man of status as well.

After some time, once the Annual Assessment concluded, the first year of high school officially came to an end.
