Two uniformed guards came for me, their faces stern and eyes refusing to meet mine as they escorted me away.


​Cheese roused from his sleep after his hearty meal, his green eyes snagging on mine in an instant. Just like that, he was up—limping toward me.


​"No—" I whispered, fighting to keep the fear that haunted me out of my voice. "You have to stay."


​He did what he did best and whimpered, his ears flattening against his head.


​I flashed him the surest smile I could muster, my palms itching with a dread I hoped he couldn't smell. "I will be back soon, and then we will play."


​His ears twitched up, his tail giving a small wag.


​I could not let him see whatever they had planned for me in that lab, knowing how volatile he was concerning my safety. The last thing I wanted was to give the brutish brothers any reason to follow through on their threats against him.


​I blew him a kiss and let the guards lead me away.
