Chapter 43 - Squeak

She stirred little by little, and faster when breakfast was brought in. She wrinkled her nose, her brows furrowing before her expression eased pleasantly, a smile curling her lips. It was a mischievous one that made me curious where her slumber had taken her.

​Unwanted, the weight of her body on my waist came back to me—slight but undeniable, her small hands wrapped around my neck, soap bubbles clinging to my jaw like some kind of absurd crown. And her laughing. Silent but real, her shoulders shaking, her face scrunched with genuine amusement as she pointed at my bubble beard like it was the funniest thing she'd ever seen.

​I'd never seen her laugh before. Actually, none of us had. I did not know why I noted that. She made a sound as she did. It was a squeak—like a mouse. Barely audible, but I caught it. I didn't know why. And now I couldn't get the sight out of my head—my scalp tingled.
