He loomed over her, his shadow swallowing her whole. The violet in his eyes had bled into a dark, bruised indigo—the color of a storm about to break.
"I am a Scion. I am a god you once thought was nothing but a myth." He leaned down, his face inches from hers, forcing her to look into the abyss of his gaze. "To compare me to the scum of your past is a death sentence, Sonya. Do not mistake my patience for an invitation to your delusions."
Sonya's heel caught on the lip of the pool. She wobbled, her eyes wide and glassy with real, unrefined terror. "Please, I'm your—we have a bond—"
"I owe you nothing."
He didn't push her, and he didn't have to. The sheer weight of his presence, the absolute rejection in his voice, was the final shove.
"Know your place."
Sonya fell.
The splash was messy, a frantic flailing of limbs as she hit the dark water again. She surfaced, coughing, reaching for the edge with trembling fingers. "Kaleb! Help me! I can't—I'm drowning!"
