The cold stole my breath, but I had braced for it and filled my lungs before impact. Sonya hadn't. She began thrashing immediately, her arms flailing without coordination. We broke the surface at the same time, and she began to scream for help.
"She pulled me in!" Sonya cried out. "She knows I can't swim! Kaleb, please save me!" Water filled her mouth mid-sentence, cutting off her plea.
I treaded water easily, relying on muscle memory from childhood summers. I watched Sonya struggle and reach for the edge, her panic intensifying as she gasped for help.
"She tried to drown me!" she cried out.
