Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Bleeding Core

The massive iron doors at the back of the cathedral opened.

A wave of freezing, green fog poured out of the dark vault, rolling over the bone pews and covering the stone floor. It smelled of ancient dust and preserved death.

Lucifer stood on the shattered remains of the Altar of Decay. He held Sarah close to his chest with one arm. He tightened his grip on his longsword with the other.

"Get behind me," Lucifer ordered Elara.

Elara did not argue. She stepped up onto the broken altar, positioning her silver shield to cover Lucifer's exposed flank.

The golden light of her wings flared brightly, pushing the green fog back from the altar steps.

[System Warning: Boss Entities Detected!]

[Entity 1: High Necromancer Voris (Level 45 - Elite)]

[Entity 2: High Necromancer Malis (Level 45 - Elite)]

[Entity 3: Lord Vane, The Legendary Lich (Level 50 - Zone Boss)]

Three figures floated out of the dark vault.

The two Necromancers wore identical, rotting black robes. Their faces were nothing but tightly stretched, gray skin over grinning skulls. They held staves made from human spines, glowing with toxic green magic.

Between them floated Lord Vane.

The Lich was a towering skeleton draped in tattered, regal finery. A rusted iron crown rested on his bleached skull.

His eye sockets burned with intense, hateful purple fire. He did not carry a weapon. The air around him simply distorted with raw, unfiltered necrotic power.

The remaining cultists in the cathedral threw themselves onto the floor, wailing in religious ecstasy as the Lich emerged.

Vane looked down at his followers. He slowly raised a skeletal hand.

"Fools," the Lich hissed. His voice was a dry, scraping whisper that echoed directly into Lucifer's mind. "You let a mortal break my altar."

Vane snapped his fingers.

A pulse of purple energy ripped through the cathedral. Every surviving cultist on the floor screamed.

Their flesh boiled instantly, melting off their bones in seconds. The green fog absorbed their life force, growing thicker and more toxic. In the blink of an eye, fifty living men were turned into perfectly clean skeletons.

The newly formed skeletons picked up their fallen bone staves and turned toward the altar, their empty eye sockets glowing green.

"Impressive parlor trick," Lucifer said loudly, cutting through the silence.

The Lich turned his burning purple eyes toward Lucifer. Vane floated closer to the altar, flanked by his two High Necromancers. The temperature in the cathedral plummeted. Frost formed on Elara's silver armor.

"You do not tremble, mortal," Vane observed. The Lich's jaw did not move, but the voice grated against Lucifer's skull. "You possess a powerful aura. A Warlord. You have the scent of thousands of dead upon you. You are a killer."

Lucifer didn't blink. The Carnage Core on his hip pulsed violently, drinking in the massive death energy flooding the room. The red light of the artifact clashed against the Lich's purple fire.

"I am," Lucifer agreed simply.

"Then why fight for the light?" Vane asked. He extended a skeletal hand, palm up. "The Goddess of Starlight is weak.

Her children are easily broken. You understand the true nature of this world, Warlord. Life is fragile. Death is absolute. Kneel before me. Offer me the Oracle's blood, and I will grant you power beyond mortal limits. You shall command my undead legions across the surface."

Elara let out a low, dangerous growl. She leveled her spear at the Lich's skull.

Lucifer looked at the extended skeletal hand. He felt Sarah tremble slightly against his chest armor. He held her tighter.

Lucifer laughed. It was a cold, hard sound that echoed off the cathedral walls.

"Power?" Lucifer mocked. "You offer me power?"

He stepped forward, down one step of the broken altar. The Warlord's Sovereign's Weight slammed into the room.

The newly raised skeletons closest to the altar immediately collapsed, their bones turning to dust under the sheer physical gravity of Lucifer's aura.

"I have seen the end of this world, Vane," Lucifer said. His voice dropped, losing all humor. He looked at the Lich with eyes that had watched the apocalypse.

"I have seen true gods tear the sky apart. I have seen the Abyss swallow oceans. You are nothing but an old pile of dust hiding in a cave. I don't want your power. I want your core."

The purple fire in Vane's eye sockets flared violently.

"Arrogant human," Vane spat. "Tear them apart."

The two High Necromancers moved instantly.

Voris pointed his spine-staff at Lucifer. A barrage of highly condensed, toxic bone-spears shot through the air.

Malis slammed his staff into the ground, summoning a wave of grasping skeletal hands that erupted from the stone floor beneath the altar, reaching for Lucifer's boots.

"Elara, tank the Lich!" Lucifer ordered.

He didn't move to dodge the bone spears. He couldn't. He had Sarah in his arms.

"I have you," a weak, musical voice whispered.

Sarah opened her starry eyes. She raised a trembling, bloodstained hand. The starlight radiating from her hair intensified, forming a blinding, pure silver dome around them.

[System: Buff Applied - Starlight Aegis]

[Effect: Absolute immunity to dark magic projectiles for 10 seconds.]

The toxic bone spears struck the silver dome and shattered instantly, dissolving into harmless green dust. The skeletal hands reaching from the floor burned to ash the moment they touched the starlight.

Lucifer looked down at the Oracle. She was incredibly weak, her face pale and drawn, but her cosmic magic was undeniably potent.

"Thank you," Lucifer said.

Sarah managed a small, tired smile. "I am... an Oracle. We are stronger... together."

"Then let's finish this," Lucifer said.

He activated Zephyr's Grace.

Lucifer vanished from the altar steps. He reappeared instantly right in front of High Necromancer Voris. The sudden burst of speed bypassed the Starlight Aegis entirely, leaving Sarah safely on the altar behind Elara.

Voris gasped, raising his staff to block.

It wasn't fast enough.

Lucifer swung his longsword with both hands. The Carnage Core flared, feeding pure True Damage into the blade. The strike cleaved cleanly through the High Necromancer's magical shield, his bone staff, and his torso.

Voris split perfectly in half. His top half hit the floor before his legs collapsed.

[Hostile Eliminated: High Necromancer Voris]

[Carnage Core charging... 10,400 / 100,000]

Malis shrieked. The second High Necromancer raised his staff, attempting to cast a point-blank necrotic explosion.

Lucifer didn't swing his sword again. He channeled his Warlord aura directly into his heavy gauntlet and backhanded the Necromancer across the skull.

The physical impact of a Tier 2 Warlord hit like a falling boulder. Malis's skull shattered into a hundred pieces. His headless body flew backward, crashing into a bone pew and splintering it into kindling.

[Hostile Eliminated: High Necromancer Malis]

[Carnage Core charging... 10,800 / 100,000]

Above Lucifer, the cavern echoed with the sound of clashing metal and magic.

Elara was fighting the Lich in mid-air.

She flew around Vane in a blur of silver and gold. Her spear thrusts left trails of celestial fire that burned away the thick green fog.

Vane floated effortlessly, blocking her strikes with barriers of solid, purple ice. He did not cast spells; he simply manipulated the raw necrotic energy of the room to counter her every move.

"Valkyrie," Vane mocked as he swatted Elara away with a massive, spectral purple hand. "Your divine light is weak here. You are cut off from your heavens."

Elara recovered quickly in the air, her wings beating hard. She ignored the taunt. She focused entirely on keeping the Lich's attention away from Lucifer and Sarah. She lunged again, driving her spear directly at the rusted crown on Vane's head.

Vane raised a skeletal finger.

"Enough," the Lich commanded.

A pulse of absolute freezing death erupted from his finger. The spell hit Elara point-blank.

The celestial fire around her spear instantly died. The golden light of her wings dimmed. The spell didn't just freeze her armor; it attacked her divine core.

Elara gasped in pain, her momentum dying. She fell from the air, crashing heavily onto the stone floor near the shattered altar.

"Elara!" Lucifer yelled.

He lunged toward her, but Vane turned his burning purple eyes downward.

"You killed my servants, Warlord," Vane hissed, floating higher into the cathedral's vaulted ceiling. "Now, I will show you why I am the Lord of Decay. You will drown in the dark."

Vane raised both arms. The purple fire in his eyes expanded, completely engulfing his skull. The temperature in the cathedral dropped to absolute zero.

The entire lake of toxic green sludge surrounding the island fortress began to boil. The necrotic energy poured into the cathedral, rushing toward the Lich like a massive, unnatural tide.

[System Warning: Catastrophic Spell Detected!]

[Spell: Death Cloud (Legendary)]

[Effect: Instantly kills all organic life below Level 50 within the designated zone. Bypasses standard magical resistances.]

Lucifer stopped running. He looked up at the ceiling. The green fog was compressing into a massive, swirling cloud of pure, concentrated death. It blotted out the light of the braziers. It blotted out Elara's golden aura.

Sarah cried out from the altar. "Lucifer! I cannot block that! It is too powerful!"

Elara pushed herself up onto her hands and knees, her silver armor covered in thick, dark frost. She gripped her spear, her golden eyes flashing with desperate resolve. She prepared to throw herself between Lucifer and the cloud.

Lucifer did not panic. He had seen legendary spells before. He knew their casting times. He knew their weaknesses.

Vane's spell was massive, but it was slow.

Lucifer reached down to his belt. He tapped his comms rune twice.

"Captain," Lucifer said calmly. His voice carried through the heavy silence of the charging spell. "The Lich's magical shields are down. He is channeling all his mana into the offense."

Miles away, on the high cliff overlooking the fortress, one hundred Cryo-Vanguard snipers already had their sights trained on the floating skeleton.

"Acquired, Warlord," the Captain's voice crackled back instantly. "Armor-piercing rounds loaded. Awaiting your mark."

Lucifer looked up at Lord Vane. The Death Cloud was almost fully formed, a swirling vortex of green and purple nightmare waiting to descend and strip the flesh from their bones.

The Lich looked down at Lucifer, triumphant.

"Die in the dark," Vane whispered.

Lucifer smiled. It was a cold, Warlord's smile. He raised his longsword and pointed the blade directly at the Lich's floating skull.

"Fire," Lucifer commanded.
