Chapter 11 - The Girl Who Came Second

Chapter Eleven

The Girl Who Came Second

A new semester began.

The classroom buzzed with familiar noise as students returned from break.

Clare, Noah, and Jack entered together as usual.

But that morning, a new face sat near the window.

A girl with light brown hair tied neatly back.

Her posture was straight.

Her eyes were focused.

She didn't look around like other new students.

She looked… prepared.

The teacher introduced her.

"This is Alice Williams. She has come from America. I hope you all welcome her."

Alice stood up politely.

Her French was careful but fluent.

Her English was even clearer.

Then she sat down.

She did not smile.

She did not try to talk to anyone.

---

Days passed.

Alice spoke only when necessary.

She never joined group chatter.

Never stayed long after class.

But one thing became clear quickly—

She was brilliant.

When results of the first term were announced:

First Rank — Noah Nehemia

Second Rank — Alice Williams

Third Rank — Jackson Henry

Fourth Rank — Clare

The class clapped.

Noah grinned proudly.

Jack leaned back casually. "Third is respectable."

Clare smiled, content.

Alice did not smile.

She stared at the paper longer than necessary.

Second.

Again.

---

That night, in her small room, Alice sat at her desk.

She opened a letter halfway written.

She continued.

"Dear Emily,

I ranked second again.

There is a girl here named Noah. She always scores one or two marks higher than me. It does not matter how much I study.

Mother wrote again last week. She said I must not return home with excuses. She asked why I cannot surpass one girl in a foreign school."

Her pen paused.

She remembered her father's voice.

"Second is just first loser."

She pressed harder against the paper.

"I try harder every time. But it is never enough."

She folded the letter carefully.

Back at school, Alice began observing.

The trio.

Noah answering confidently.

Jack arguing with teachers playfully.

Clare explaining things calmly when others didn't understand.

They laughed together.

Walked together.

Shared notes.

Alice noticed something.

They studied together.

They discussed lessons openly.

They weren't competing against each other.

They were supporting each other.

Meanwhile, Alice studied alone.

One afternoon, she overheard Clare explaining a math solution to Jack.

Noah corrected a small mistake gently.

They weren't hiding knowledge.

They were building it together.

That evening, Alice received a reply from her American friend.

"If you can't beat her alone, maybe you shouldn't try alone. Become friends with her. Learn how she studies. Follow her method."

Alice read the letter twice.

Become friends?

With the girl who takes first place every time?

Her fingers tightened slightly.

Her pride resisted.

But her parents' voices echoed louder.

Second is not enough.

The next day in class, Alice looked at Noah longer than usual.

Not with open hatred.

Not yet.

But something small had shifted.

A decision was forming.

And the trio, laughing near the window, had no idea someone was slowly stepping closer—

Not as a friend.

Not yet as an enemy.

But as something in between.
