The Broken Interior
While the Maelstrom is chaotic and fluid, the Ashen Hollow is fixed — and wrong.
Located in the central, far from the stabilizing influence of major Aegis Spires, the Hollow marks the site of one of the most violent Rift collapses of the Red Century.
The Landscape
The Ashen Hollow is defined by:
- Floating land fragments suspended above cracked terrain
- Blackened plains of fine ash that never disperse
- Jagged gravity distortions
- Ruined cities partially embedded into rock at unnatural angles
Some areas pull downward with crushing force.
Others feel nearly weightless.
At night, faint fractures glow beneath the surface like veins of dim embers.
Psychological Effects
Extended exposure to the Hollow causes:
- Disorientation
- Temporal confusion
- Hallucinations of "parallel selves"
- A sensation of being observed from above
Adventurer Guilds use the outer perimeter for elite trials — believing those who can maintain clarity there can survive anywhere.
Few are sent into the deep core.
Fewer return unchanged.
The Hollow's Secret
At the exact center lies a phenomenon called The Sundered Axis.
It is a vertical column of unstable space reaching skyward — visible only at certain hours. Lightning occasionally strikes it from clear skies.
Some theorize it marks where reality attempted to reseal too quickly during the Awakening.
Others whisper that something is imprisoned beneath it.
Recent readings indicate Aether pressure building below the Axis.
Slowly.
Steadily.
