The Silent North
Far beyond the central plains of Vlodea and north of the Ironveil Mountains lies the Frostcrown Expanse — a vast, glacial wilderness where winter does not retreat.
It is the coldest region in all of Altrexia.
And the quietest.
Jagged mountain ranges crowned with permanent frost give the Expanse its name. Snowfields stretch for hundreds of miles, broken only by frozen forests, shattered ridgelines, and ancient stone ruins half-buried beneath ice.
The auroras here are unnaturally vivid.
Some scholars claim they are not auroras at all — but distant distortions in reality.
The Awakening
Unlike the southern regions that burned or mutated, the Frostcrown Expanse froze.
When the Great Awakening occurred, several massive Aether Rifts opened in the northern sky. But instead of pouring fire and demons, they unleashed something colder — entities of stillness, crystal, and silence.
Blizzards raged for decades.
Entire settlements vanished beneath expanding ice.
Trade routes disappeared.
And then, without warning, the largest northern Rifts sealed themselves.
No Spire was constructed there.
To this day, scholars do not know why.
The Land Itself
The Frostcrown is defined by extremes:
- Glacial cliffs that shimmer blue in pale light
- Ice plains where sound carries for miles
- Subterranean caverns of frozen crystal
- Black stone ruins predating recorded history
There are regions where:
- Snow falls upward during certain lunar cycles.
- Reflections in ice surfaces move independently.
- Time feels slowed, stretched thin.
The Expanse is not heavily corrupted.
It is preserved.
And that preservation feels deliberate.
Settlements of the Frostcrown
Few cities exist here.
The Bastion of Kharvahl
A dwarven-constructed stronghold carved into a frostbound mountain face. It monitors northern anomalies and guards ancient sealed tunnels beneath the ice.
Skyrime Outposts
Small, mobile human settlements built on reinforced sled platforms. They migrate seasonally to avoid unstable zones.
The White Sanctum
An isolated arcane observatory built by scholars from Nolvaris. Its researchers study northern auroral distortions and report unusual Aether readings.
Many expeditions into deeper Frostcrown never return.
Not because of monsters.
Because of something else.
Political Relevance
Most of Altrexia views the Frostcrown as a remote frontier.
But recently:
- Aether readings in the north have begun rising.
- The auroras are appearing farther south than before.
- Ice layers near ancient ruins are thinning.
And for the first time in two centuries…
A minor Rift opened in the Frostcrown Expanse.
It did not freeze the land.
It burned.
