Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Chapter 8: The Guerilla CEO

The interior of the Inner Citadel was a tomb of damp stone and flickering torchlight. Arthur sat at a scarred oak table, his Karmic Ledger open before him. The blue light of the holographic interface reflected in his eyes, highlighting the deep lines of exhaustion on his face.

Outside, the city was screaming.

Vex had occupied the outer districts, and the simulation was playing out the "Gilded Conquest." From the high windows, Arthur could see bonfires. Vex's soldiers were feasting on simulated wine and meat, their laughter echoing up the cliffs. It was a calculated psychological blow—the scent of roasting pork drifting into the starving Citadel.

"General," Captain Harlen muttered, his voice trembling. He was one of the few who hadn't joined the whispering groups in the shadows. "Three hundred men deserted through the sewers an hour ago. They're... they're kneeling at Vex's feet right now, trading our defensive blueprints for bread."

Arthur didn't look up from his ledgers. "Good. Let them go."

"Good?" Harlen slammed a fist onto the table. "They are giving him the map to our hidden sally ports! By morning, he'll know exactly where our armor is thinnest!"

"They are giving him 'Information Debt', Harlen," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Vex is a conqueror. He thinks every asset he gains makes him stronger. But those men are mouths. He now has three hundred more mouths to feed, three hundred more souls to pay, and three hundred more variables in his 'Perfect' army."

Arthur stood up and pointed to the Ledger.

"Vex is currently occupying the Granary District," Arthur continued. "He thinks he's won the food supply. What he doesn't know is that I've already converted the grain into 'Essence-Fuel' and rigged the silos with Alchemist's Fire."

"You... you burned our food?" Harlen gasped.

"I didn't burn it. I 'reallocated' it into a weapon," Arthur corrected. "We are going to shift from a high-maintenance defense to a low-cost insurgency. We don't fight him in the streets. We fight him in the 'Balance Sheet'."

The Citadel groaned as the simulation began to dissolve the luxury of the inner halls. The tapestries vanished; the silver chandeliers melted into raw energy. Arthur was "liquidation" his surroundings to fund a desperate gamble.

Suddenly, a massive boom shook the floor. Vex's golden light flared outside the window.

"ARTHUR!" the Prince's voice shook the very foundation of the mountain. "Your own men tell me you're burning your stores! Are you so pathetic that you'd rather starve than surrender? Join me, and I'll make you my Chief Auditor! I'll give you a life of comfort while I rule the Scales!"

Arthur walked to the balcony, looking down at the golden comet below. Vex was standing on the ruins of the Second Gate, his jade hammer glowing like a sun. He looked invincible.

"I've had enough auditors in my time, Vex!" Arthur shouted back, his voice amplified by the Ledger. "They all told me I couldn't survive a market crash! And yet, I'm the one who reached seventy-six, and you're the one who died at nineteen!"

Vex's face twisted in rage. He raised his hammer, ready to strike, but Arthur held up a single finger.

"Before you swing that," Arthur said, "ask yourself: why is your 'Unlimited Credit' from the Legends suddenly flickering?"

Vex blinked. He looked at his own HUD. A small, yellow warning sign had appeared in the corner of his vision.

[WARNING: AGGRESSOR OVERHEAD EXCEEDING DIVIDENDS]

[CURRENT DEBT: 150,000 CREDITS]

"What... what is this?" Vex stammered.

"You've been occupying a city for twelve hours," Arthur explained, leaning casually against the stone railing. "You're paying 12,000 soldiers 'Sovereign-tier' wages. You're maintaining a horse made of light. And because I burned the granaries, you're currently importing food from the Nexus Market at a 300% markup."

Arthur tapped his Ledger. "You're winning the map, Vex. But you're losing the bank. In forty-eight hours, you won't have an army. You'll have 12,000 angry creditors."

Vex roared and slammed his hammer into the Second Gate, leveling the remaining stone. "I DON'T NEED MONEY! I HAVE POWER!"

He charged the Inner Citadel, a golden blur of fury.

Arthur stepped back from the balcony, his face pale but determined. "Harlen, get the men to the lower vaults. The 'Market' is about to get volatile."
