The forest exploded.
Shadows poured between the trees like a living storm, twisting and writhing, swallowing moonlight as they surged toward the ridge. Wolves roared in response — Moonshadow and Bloodfang alike — their howls blending into one fierce, defiant cry.
Rylan stepped in front of me, claws blazing with moonlight, eyes glowing gold. "Stay behind me."
The bond pulsed — sharp, protective, electric.
Rowan barked orders. "Hold the line! Don't let them reach the ridge!"
Kade snarled, shifting mid‑stride. "Bloodfang — with me!"
Wolves collided with shadows in a violent clash of fur and darkness. The air filled with snarls, screams, and the crackle of moon‑charged energy.
Rylan moved like lightning.
Every slash of his claws sent shadows shrieking backward. Every step he took pushed the darkness away. The moon‑mark beneath his skin glowed brighter with each strike, pulsing like a heartbeat.
He was terrifying.
He was beautiful.
He was unstoppable.
But the shadows kept coming.
Dozens.
Hundreds.
A tide of darkness.
Lucien's army.
I stayed close, fighting off smaller tendrils of shadow with my claws, but every time one got too close, Rylan was there — a wall of golden fury between me and the darkness.
"Lyra!" Rowan shouted from across the clearing. "Behind you!"
I spun just as a shadow lunged, jaws wide, eyes black and hollow. I slashed upward, claws glowing faintly with moonlight — a spark I didn't understand, but didn't question.
The shadow dissolved with a hiss.
Rylan froze.
He turned to me slowly, eyes wide. "Lyra… your claws."
I looked down.
They glowed.
Not like his — not bright, not burning — but faintly, softly, like moonlight reflected on water.
"I don't—" I began.
Rylan grabbed my wrist, eyes searching mine. "The bond. It's strengthening you."
My breath caught. "Is that possible?"
"Yes," he whispered. "But only if—"
A roar cut him off.
A massive shadow surged from the treeline, towering above the others, its form shifting and twisting like smoke caught in a storm. Its eyes glowed black, its mouth stretching into a jagged, unnatural grin.
Lucien's voice echoed through the clearing.
"Brother…"
Rylan stiffened. "Lucien."
The shadow lunged.
Rylan shoved me behind him and leapt forward, claws blazing. He collided with the shadow in a burst of golden light, the impact shaking the ground.
Rowan shouted, "Hold the line! Don't let the shadows through!"
Kade roared, "Protect the Alpha!"
But the battle shifted.
This wasn't a fight between packs and shadows anymore.
This was Rylan versus Lucien.
Moon‑marked versus shadow‑bound.
Light versus darkness.
Rylan slashed through the shadow's chest, golden energy burning through the darkness. Lucien screamed — a sound that made my bones ache — and retaliated with a wave of black tendrils that wrapped around Rylan's arms, dragging him down.
"Rylan!" I shouted.
He struggled, claws digging into the ground, but the shadows tightened, pulling him toward the massive form.
Lucien's voice purred. "You can't win, brother. Not while you're protecting her."
Rylan snarled. "I'm not protecting her. I'm protecting everyone from you."
Lucien laughed. "Liar."
The shadows surged, slamming Rylan into the ground.
I ran forward.
Rowan grabbed my arm. "Lyra, no!"
"Let me go!"
"You can't help him!"
"Yes," I said, voice shaking, "I can."
The bond pulsed — hot, fierce, undeniable.
Rylan's head snapped toward me, eyes wide. "Lyra — stay back!"
Lucien hissed. "Yes, little wolf. Come closer."
Rylan roared, "Don't touch her!"
Lucien's shadows tightened around him, dragging him to his knees.
I tore free from Rowan's grip and sprinted toward Rylan.
Rowan cursed. "Lyra!"
Kade shouted, "Protect her!"
But I didn't stop.
I couldn't.
The bond pulled me forward — not like a chain, but like a lifeline.
Rylan struggled against the shadows, eyes burning with fear. "Lyra — please — stay back!"
I shook my head. "No."
Lucien's voice slithered through the air. "How touching."
The shadows lunged for me.
Rylan screamed. "NO!"
The moon answered.
A blast of silver light erupted from the sky, slamming into the clearing with a force that knocked wolves and shadows alike off their feet. The ground trembled. The trees shook. The air crackled with raw, ancient power.
The shadows recoiled, shrieking.
Rylan froze, staring at me in shock.
The moonlight wrapped around me like a cloak — warm, soft, powerful.
Lucien hissed. "Impossible."
Rylan whispered, "Lyra… you're—"
I didn't feel cursed.
I didn't feel weak.
I didn't feel afraid.
I felt chosen.
The moonlight pulsed through me, flowing into my claws, my bones, my breath.
Lucien snarled. "You think the moon will save you?"
Rylan stood, golden light blazing around him. "No. She will."
Lucien roared and lunged.
Rylan moved to intercept — but I stepped forward.
The moonlight surged.
I slashed upward, claws glowing brighter than ever before.
The shadow screamed as my strike tore through it, moonlight burning away the darkness. Lucien's form flickered, destabilizing, unraveling.
Rylan stared at me, stunned. "Lyra…"
Lucien hissed, voice cracking. "This isn't over."
The shadow exploded into smoke.
Silence fell.
Wolves stared.
Rylan stared.
Even Rowan stared.
I stood in the center of the clearing, moonlight fading slowly from my skin.
Rylan approached me slowly, as if afraid I'd disappear. "Lyra… what did you do?"
I swallowed. "I don't know."
He reached out, hesitated, then brushed his fingers against mine.
The bond pulsed — warm, steady, powerful.
Rylan whispered, "The moon didn't just choose me."
My breath caught. "What are you saying?"
He looked at me — really looked — and something in his eyes shifted.
"You're marked too."
