Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: The Alpha Who Walked Out of the Ruins

The sanctuary doors groaned as they opened, letting in a rush of cold night air that smelled of pine, blood, and distant smoke. The moon hung low above the treeline, swollen and bright — too bright, almost watchful.

Rylan stepped out first.

Not as the cursed Alpha.

Not as the hunted brother.

Not as the wolf fighting fate.

But as the Alpha who had broken the curse.

Golden light still flickered faintly beneath his skin, like embers refusing to die. His shoulders were squared, his jaw set, his eyes sharp and burning with purpose.

He looked like a king walking out of a battlefield.

I followed him, the silver glow around me fading slowly, settling into something quieter — not gone, but controlled. Chosen. Claimed.

Rowan and Kade emerged behind us, both limping, both exhausted, both staring at the forest like it might attack at any second.

The packs were waiting.

Moonshadow wolves.

Bloodfang wolves.

Dozens of them.

Injured. Dirty. Shaken.

But alive.

The moment they saw Rylan, the clearing fell silent.

Every wolf bowed.

Every single one.

Even Rowan.

Even Kade.

Rylan froze.

He wasn't used to this.

He wasn't ready for this.

He didn't know how to accept this.

But the moon had chosen him.

And the packs had seen what he did.

What we did.

I stepped closer, brushing my fingers against his. "They're bowing to their Alpha."

He swallowed hard. "I don't deserve this."

"Yes," I whispered, "you do."

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, grounding.

Rowan straightened first. "Alright, enough bowing. We're not at a coronation."

Kade muttered, "Speak for yourself. My legs needed the break."

Rylan shot them both a glare. "Can you two be serious for once?"

Rowan shrugged. "Probably not."

Kade nodded. "Definitely not."

Despite everything — the danger, the exhaustion, the looming war — I almost smiled.

Almost.

Because the forest shifted.

A cold wind swept through the clearing, carrying the scent of rot and shadow.

Rylan stiffened. "He's still close."

Rowan growled. "Lucien?"

"No," Rylan said quietly. "Something else."

The wolves tensed.

The moon dimmed.

The shadows between the trees thickened, swirling like smoke.

A low, guttural howl echoed through the forest — not wolf, not Hollow, not anything I'd ever heard before.

Kade's fur bristled. "What the hell was that?"

Rylan's voice dropped to a whisper. "A Revenant."

Rowan blinked. "A what?"

Rylan turned to him, eyes darkening. "A creature born from shadow and bone. Stronger than a Bonewalker. Faster. Smarter. Deadlier."

Kade cursed. "Lucien's making more monsters."

"No," Rylan said. "He's evolving."

My stomach twisted. "Why now?"

Rylan looked at me — and the fear in his eyes wasn't for himself.

"He felt the seal."

The bond pulsed — sharp, warning.

"He knows we broke the curse," Rylan said. "He knows we're stronger now."

Rowan crossed his arms. "So he's panicking."

"No," Rylan whispered. "He's preparing."

The forest went silent.

Too silent.

Then—

A scream tore through the night.

A Moonshadow scout stumbled into the clearing, blood dripping from his shoulder, eyes wide with terror.

"Alpha Rowan! Alpha Rylan!"

Rowan rushed forward. "What happened?"

The scout trembled. "The Revenant… it's coming."

Rylan stepped forward. "How many?"

The scout swallowed. "Just one."

Kade frowned. "Just one? That's—"

The scout shook his head violently. "One is enough."

The forest exploded.

A massive creature burst through the treeline — taller than any wolf, its body made of twisted bones fused with shadow. Its skull was elongated, its claws like obsidian blades, its eyes glowing with unnatural light.

A Revenant.

The packs recoiled.

Rowan cursed. "Oh, hell."

Kade snarled. "That thing is huge."

Rylan stepped in front of me, claws blazing gold. "Lyra — stay behind me."

I shook my head. "No."

He turned sharply. "Lyra—"

"I'm not hiding," I said. "Not anymore."

The bond pulsed — hot, fierce, unbreakable.

Rylan exhaled shakily. "Then stay close."

The Revenant roared, shaking the ground. Wolves scattered, forming a defensive circle around the clearing.

Rowan shouted, "Moonshadow — left flank!"

Kade roared, "Bloodfang — right flank!"

The Revenant lunged.

Rylan met it head‑on.

Golden claws clashed with bone and shadow, sparks of moonlight exploding across the clearing. The impact sent shockwaves through the ground.

Rylan slashed again, tearing through the Revenant's shoulder. The creature shrieked, swinging its massive claw toward him.

I moved without thinking.

Silver light erupted from my hands, forming a barrier that deflected the blow. The Revenant staggered back, hissing.

Rylan stared at me, stunned. "Lyra…"

I stepped beside him. "I told you. I'm not hiding."

The bond pulsed — warm, fierce, unstoppable.

The Revenant roared again, charging.

Rylan lunged.

I followed.

Rowan and Kade flanked us, wolves surging behind them.

The clearing erupted into chaos — claws, teeth, bone, shadow, moonlight.

Rylan slashed through the Revenant's ribs. I blasted its legs with silver energy. Rowan tore into its flank. Kade leapt onto its back, ripping at the shadowed spine.

The Revenant shrieked, collapsing to its knees.

Rylan shouted, "Lyra — now!"

I raised my hands.

Silver light surged.

The Revenant lunged one last time—

And I unleashed the moon.

The blast tore through the creature's chest, shattering bone, dissolving shadow. The Revenant screamed, its form collapsing into dust and smoke.

Silence fell.

The packs stared.

Rylan turned to me slowly, chest heaving, eyes wide.

"Lyra… you killed a Revenant."

I swallowed. "We killed it."

He shook his head. "No. You did."

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, powerful.

Rowan approached, panting. "Well… that was horrifying."

Kade nodded. "And impressive."

Rylan cupped my face, voice soft. "Lyra… you're stronger than you know."

I opened my mouth to respond—

But the wind shifted.

Cold.

Sharp.

Wrong.

Lucien's voice drifted through the trees.

"You killed one."

Rylan stiffened.

Lucien whispered,

"I have dozens."

The forest went silent.

The moon dimmed.

The war had begun.
