Chapter 17 - Cracks in the Crown

The palace no longer felt like victory.

It felt like a cage.

Elara walked through the grand hall, her heels echoing sharply against the marble floor. Servants lowered their heads as she passed. No one dared to meet her eyes.

But silence was not loyalty.

It was fear.

Inside the council chamber, the ministers were already waiting. Their whispers stopped the moment she entered.

"There are reports," one of them began carefully, "of secret gatherings in the lower districts."

Elara's eyes narrowed. "Rebels?""Possibly. They speak of Rowan."

The name lingered in the air like a curse.

Elara's fingers tightened around the edge of the table. "Increase the patrols. Arrest anyone spreading his name."

Another minister hesitated. "Your Majesty… the people are struggling. The new taxes—"

"Enough!" Elara's voice sliced through the room. "Power requires sacrifice."

But even as she spoke, doubt crept into her chest.

Later that night, she stood alone in her chamber again. The crown rested on the table, but she did not wear it.

She remembered Rowan's calm eyes. The way he never raised his voice. The way people trusted him without fear. And for the first time—

She questioned herself.

"What if I did not defeat him?" she whispered. "What if I only awakened him?"

A sudden knock interrupted her thoughts.

"My Queen!" a guard rushed in, breathless. "There has been an attack."

Elara froze. "Where?"

"The royal treasury."

Far from the palace, in the shadows of the city, chaos was unfolding.

Smoke curled into the night sky. The royal treasury doors had been forced open—not destroyed, but carefully unlocked.Inside, the gold was untouched.

Instead, something else was left behind.

A single black banner.

Marked with the symbol of the old throne.

Rowan stood on a nearby rooftop, watching silently as palace guards scrambled in confusion.

The young soldier beside him looked surprised. "We could have taken the gold. Why didn't we?"

Rowan's eyes remained fixed on the palace towers.

"Because this was never about gold," he said quietly.

"It was about a message."Below them, one of the guards picked up the banner.

Murmurs spread quickly.

"He's alive…"

Rowan turned away, disappearing into the darkness once more.

"Tonight," he said, "we gave them fear."

Thunder echoed again across the sky.

Back in her chamber, Elara stared at the black banner now laid before her.

Her hands trembled slightly.

"He's challenging me," she whispered.

No.

He was not challenging her.He was reminding her—

The king had not fallen.

He had risen in the shadows.

And this was only the beginning.
