Chapter 62 - When the Darkness Answers

The explosion didn't stop at one.

It continued.

Again.

And again.

BOOM—!

The palace walls trembled as shockwaves spread across the kingdom. Outside, the sky had turned almost completely dark. The cracks were no longer small.

They were growing.

Breaking.

Spreading like veins across the heavens.

Aria rushed toward the palace entrance, Rowan right behind her. The moment they stepped outside—

They froze.

The outer barrier—

Was collapsing.

A massive dome of golden light, once strong enough to stop entire armies, now flickered violently. Black energy clung to it like poison, eating it away piece by piece.

Soldiers and mages stood below, desperately trying to reinforce it.

"It's not holding!" one mage shouted.

"We're losing it!"

The Dragon King stepped forward, his presence alone pushing back the fear.

"Fall back."

His voice echoed like thunder.

The mages hesitated—

"But Your Majesty—!"

"That's an order."

Reluctantly, they retreated.

Aria's grip tightened on her sword.

"…It's worse than before."

Rowan didn't respond.

His eyes were locked on the sky.

On the darkness.

On the falling black particles.

They were everywhere now.

And this time—

They weren't just falling.

They were moving.

Like they were alive.

Searching.

Hunting.

"Rowan," Aria called.

No answer.

She stepped closer.

"Rowan!"

He flinched slightly.

"…They're calling again."

Aria's heart sank.

"No."

Her voice was firm.

"You ignore it."

Rowan shook his head slowly.

"It's not that easy."

The mark on his shoulder glowed again.

Darker this time.

Deeper.

Like something inside it was waking up.

CRACK—

A loud sound split the air.

The barrier shattered.

Completely.

For a moment—

Silence.

Then—

Chaos.

Dark creatures poured in from the sky.

Not like the shadow monsters they had fought before.

These were different.

More solid.

More real.

Their forms twisted and unstable, glowing purple eyes scanning the land below.

"DEFEND THE KINGDOM!" a commander shouted.

Soldiers charged.

Magic filled the air.

Fire.

Ice.

Lightning.

But something was wrong.

When the attacks hit the creatures—

They didn't stop.

Some slowed down.

Some flickered.

But none of them truly fell.

"They're not dying!" someone screamed.

Aria's eyes sharpened.

"Target the core!"

She dashed forward, her blade glowing with brilliant light.

A creature lunged at her—

She cut through it in a single strike.

This time—

It screamed.

And dissolved.

Aria realized immediately.

"Light works!"

But there weren't enough light users.

Not nearly enough.

Rowan stood still.

Watching.

Listening.

Feeling.

Every creature.

Every movement.

Every piece of darkness—

He could feel all of it.

Like it was connected to him.

"Rowan!"

Aria's voice reached him again.

"Move!"

He nodded.

"…Yeah."

Flames ignited around his body.

Bright.

Fierce.

Powerful.

He stepped forward—

And unleashed a wave of fire.

A massive explosion burned through dozens of creatures at once.

This time—

They screamed.

They burned.

They vanished.

Hope flickered across the battlefield.

"The Flame Guardian is here!"

"Fight back!"

But Rowan didn't feel like a hero.

Not right now.

Because when his flames touched the darkness—

It didn't feel like destruction.

It felt like—

Recognition.

A creature lunged at him from behind.

Before it could touch him—

It stopped.

Frozen mid-air.

Rowan turned slowly.

The creature wasn't attacking.

It was trembling.

Like it was afraid.

"…Why?" Rowan whispered.

The creature's form flickered.

Then—

It dissolved on its own.

No attack.

No strike.

Just… gone.

Aria saw it.

And her expression changed.

"That's not normal…"

Suddenly—

A louder roar echoed across the battlefield.

All movement slowed.

Even the creatures paused.

Because something bigger—

Had arrived.

From the broken sky—

A massive figure descended.

Larger.

Darker.

More stable than the others.

Its body was fully formed.

Almost human—

But not quite.

Purple energy pulsed through it like veins.

Its eyes—

Locked onto Rowan.

"…Fragment."

The word echoed across the battlefield.

Rowan's body stiffened.

Aria immediately moved in front of him.

"Stay back."

The creature ignored her.

It stepped closer.

Each step cracked the ground beneath it.

"You are waking."

Rowan clenched his fists.

"I'm not one of you."

The creature tilted its head.

"Not yet."

Aria attacked.

A flash of light cut through the air—

The creature blocked it easily.

With one hand.

Too easily.

Aria's eyes widened.

"Impossible…"

The creature raised its hand.

Dark energy gathered instantly.

Rowan reacted.

"ARIA—!"

BOOM—!

The attack hit.

A massive explosion threw Aria backward.

She crashed into the ground hard.

"Aria!"

Rowan ran to her.

She coughed, struggling to stand.

"I'm fine…"

But she wasn't.

Not fully.

Something inside Rowan snapped.

Not completely.

But enough.

The mark on his shoulder burned.

Hard.

Pain shot through his body.

He dropped to one knee.

"ROWAN!"

Aria tried to reach him—

But dark energy burst out from his body.

Forcing everyone back.

Even the creature paused.

Interested.

"…Good."

Rowan's breathing became heavy.

Unstable.

His flames flickered.

Then—

Changed.

From bright orange—

To something darker.

Mixed with black.

Aria's heart stopped.

"No…"

Rowan slowly stood up.

His head lowered.

Shadows moved around his body.

His voice—

When he spoke—

Was not completely his own.

"…I can feel it."

The creature smiled.

"Of course you can."

Aria stepped forward despite the pressure.

"Rowan! Fight it!"

For a moment—

His body trembled.

His real self—

Still there.

Still fighting.

"…Aria…"

Her eyes filled with hope.

"Yes! Stay with me!"

But then—

The darkness surged again.

Stronger.

Louder.

"…It's easier… this way…"

Aria froze.

"No."

That wasn't him.

That wasn't Rowan.

The creature stepped closer.

"No more resistance."

"Become whole."

Rowan raised his hand slowly.

Dark flames gathered.
