Chapter 63 - The Awakening of the Void

Dark flames gathered.

Not like before.

Not like anything Rowan had ever used.

These flames didn't simply burn—

they devoured.

The air around him twisted violently, distorting as if reality itself was struggling to exist near him. The ground beneath his feet cracked open with a deafening sound, black veins spreading outward like a living infection, crawling across the battlefield.

The wind howled.

The sky groaned.

And the darkness… responded.

Aria's breath hitched in her throat.

"Rowan… please…"

Her voice trembled—not from fear of the enemy, but fear of losing him.

This wasn't just another battle.

This was something else.

Something far more terrifying.

For a brief moment—

Just a single, fragile moment—

Rowan's fingers trembled.

The dark flames flickered.

His body stiffened as if caught between two forces pulling him apart.

"...Aria…"

The sound of her name escaped his lips like a fading echo.

Hope ignited in her eyes.

"Yes! I'm here! I'm right here!"

She took a step forward, ignoring the crushing pressure of the dark energy surrounding him.

"Come back… Rowan, come back to me!"

Inside his mind—

Memories began to fracture through the darkness.

Fragments of light.

Aria smiling under the sunlight.

Her voice calling his name.

The warmth of her hand in his.

Battles fought together.

Victories shared.

Promises unspoken—but deeply understood.

Light.

Warm.

Real.

But then—

A deeper voice emerged.

Cold.

Endless.

Ancient beyond comprehension.

"That light… is nothing but weakness."

The warmth shattered.

The memories cracked.

Rowan's expression twisted, pain flashing across his face.

His breathing became uneven.

Heavy.

The mark on his shoulder burned violently—no longer just red, but something darker… deeper… like an abyss staring back.

The massive creature before them stepped forward.

Each step made the earth tremble.

"You were never meant to protect this world," it said calmly, almost gently.

Its glowing purple eyes locked onto Rowan.

"You were born from something greater."

"You were meant to end it."

Aria shook her head violently.

"No! That's a lie!"

Her voice cut through the chaos like a blade of light.

She forced herself forward, step by step, fighting against the invisible force pushing her back.

"He chose this!" she shouted.

"He chose to fight!"

"He chose to protect!"

Her voice cracked—

"...He chose me!"

Silence fell.

Even the battlefield seemed to hold its breath.

Rowan's flames flickered again.

The darkness surged—then faltered—then surged again.

Like it was… struggling.

Conflicted.

The creature tilted its head slightly.

"…Fascinating."

It raised its hand slowly.

Dark energy condensed into a single point, dense and suffocating, pulling in everything around it.

"If the light binds you…"

Its voice grew colder.

"…then I will erase it."

Aria's eyes widened.

Before she could react—

The attack was unleashed.

A beam of pure void energy tore through the air, faster than sound, faster than thought.

"ARIA—!!"

This time—

Rowan moved.

Not because of the darkness.

Not because of instinct alone.

But because of choice.

He appeared in front of her in an instant.

And took the attack.

BOOM—!!!

The explosion erupted like the end of the world itself.

A massive shockwave blasted across the battlefield, throwing soldiers and creatures alike off their feet. Even the Dragon King had to brace himself, wings spreading to shield those behind him.

The ground shattered.

The sky trembled.

Everything—

fell silent.

Smoke filled the air, thick and suffocating.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

"Rowan…?"

Aria's voice trembled as she stepped forward.

The smoke began to clear.

Slowly.

Painfully.

And there—

He stood.

Barely.

His body was covered in burns, his armor shattered, his breathing uneven. Blood dripped from his lips, staining the ground beneath him.

The dark flames were gone.

Only faint, unstable fire flickered around him now.

But he was still standing.

Still… himself.

"…Don't touch her."

His voice was weak.

But clear.

Unshaken.

The creature stared at him.

For the first time—

its expression changed.

Not amusement.

Not indifference.

Something colder.

"You resist your nature," it said.

Rowan coughed, struggling to stay upright.

"Maybe…"

He slowly lifted his head.

His eyes, though tired, still burned with determination.

"…but I decide who I am."

Aria's eyes filled with tears.

That voice—

That strength—

That stubborn, unyielding will—

That was him.

That was Rowan.

The creature's aura darkened.

"He is incomplete," it murmured.

"Still divided."

Its gaze slowly shifted toward the sky—

toward the expanding cracks that now covered almost the entire heavens.

"…Then we will let Him decide."

The world changed.

Instantly.

The temperature dropped.

The air grew heavy.

Unbearable.

The sky—

broke.

A massive crack tore across the heavens, deeper and wider than any before. Darkness poured out of it like an endless ocean, swallowing the light itself.

And from within—

Something moved.

Not a creature.

Not a shape.

But a presence.

Ancient.

Boundless.

Watching.

Every being on the battlefield froze.

The dark creatures lowered themselves, trembling.

The Dragon King's expression hardened, his eyes narrowing.

"…So it begins."

Aria felt it too.

That overwhelming pressure.

That suffocating existence.

This wasn't like the Abyss Lord.

This was something beyond that.

Something… absolute.

Rowan's body trembled violently.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

A voice echoed.

Not in the air.

Not in sound.

But inside every mind.

Inside every soul.

"Return… to me."

Aria grabbed Rowan's hand tightly.

"No. Don't listen to it."

But his grip—

was shaking.

The mark on his shoulder pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

it spread.

Dark patterns crawled across his skin like living shadows.

"Rowan…?"

Her voice broke.

He didn't answer.

His eyes—

began to change.

Slowly.

From warmth—

to something cold.

Something endless.

The presence above deepened.

"You were never separate."

"You are my fragment."

The massive creature fell to one knee.

"Welcome… Void Emperor."

Aria's world shattered.

"…No."

Her voice trembled.

"No… that's not true…"

She held Rowan tighter, as if letting go would mean losing him forever.

"You're not him… you're not!"

Time slowed.

The battlefield faded.

All that remained—

was the two of them.

Rowan's body shook violently.

Inside him—

light and darkness clashed.

Choice against destiny.

Hope against oblivion.

And then—

he spoke.

Softly.

Broken.

"…Aria…"

A single tear slipped down his cheek.

"I'm… trying…"

Her grip tightened.

Her voice, though trembling, remained strong.

"I know."

She stepped closer.

"And I'm not letting you go."

Above them—

the sky roared.

The darkness surged.

And the war—

had only just begun.
