Chapter 17 - The Distance Between Two People

The mist had begun to settle over the hills.

From the viewpoint where they stood, Dehradun looked like a scattered constellation — thousands of small lights stretching across the valley floor. The rain had faded into a thin cool breeze that carried the scent of wet pine and mountain soil.

Shivanya rested her hands lightly on the metal railing.

She had driven past this road many times before, but rarely stopped.

Tonight the view felt different.

Perhaps because she wasn't alone.

"You come here often?" she asked again, softer this time.

"Not really," Rudraksh replied.

"Then why tonight?"

He leaned back against the car slightly.

"I wanted to show you something outside the hospital."

She smiled faintly.

"You're assuming my life only happens there."

"Doesn't it?"

She thought about the question.

"My life is very… structured."

"That sounds like a polite word for exhausting."

She laughed quietly.

"You spend your life in boardrooms and construction sites."

"That's also exhausting."

The wind moved through the trees behind them, rustling the branches in soft waves.

For a moment they stood quietly again.

Then Rudraksh said,

"Aditya seems protective of you."

She glanced sideways at him.

"He's a friend."

"And slightly suspicious of me."

"That's normal."

"Why?"

"Because people in power often make life complicated for everyone else."

He raised an eyebrow.

"That's a strong opinion."

"It's experience."

That answer made him smile.

"Fair."

Far below, a car moved slowly along the road toward the city.

Its headlights briefly cut through the mist before disappearing again.

Shivanya watched the lights fade.

"You know something strange?" she said.

"What?"

"I usually feel uncomfortable at events like tonight."

"You didn't look uncomfortable."

"That's because Naina kept distracting me."

He nodded slowly.

"She seems like someone who refuses to let people stay serious."

"That's exactly what she does."

"And you need that."

"Everyone does."

The wind picked up slightly.

A lock of hair slipped across her face.

Before she could brush it away, Rudraksh instinctively reached forward.

His fingers paused just short of touching her.

Both of them noticed the moment at the same time.

He pulled his hand back almost immediately.

"Sorry."

"It's fine."

Back at the Rajpur Heritage Hotel, the charity evening had begun winding down.

Guests were leaving in small groups while the staff cleared tables.

Kabir stood near the entrance, checking his phone.

Rhea approached him calmly.

"Have you heard from Rudraksh?"

"He stepped out."

"With the doctor."

"Yes."

She folded her arms lightly.

"You seem amused."

"I usually am."

On the hillside road above the city, Shivanya finally stepped back from the railing.

"We should go," she said.

"It's getting late."

"Yes."

They returned to the car.

As they drove back down toward Dehradun, the road curved gently through the forest.

Neither of them spoke for several minutes.

But the silence didn't feel empty.

It felt like something new had begun forming — quietly, cautiously.

When they reached the residential lane near her apartment, Rudraksh stopped the car.

The rain had completely ended.

The streetlights cast soft circles of light along the pavement.

Shivanya opened the door but paused before stepping out.

"Thank you," she said.

"For the view."

"You're welcome."

She stepped out and walked toward the building entrance.

Halfway up the stairs she turned once.

The car was still there.

Rudraksh sat behind the wheel watching the quiet street.

For a brief moment their eyes met again across the distance.

Then she disappeared inside.

As Rudraksh drove away, he realized something unusual.

The evening had not felt like a business obligation.
