Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Sable's Findings

The report was forty-seven pages.

Riku sent it at four in the morning, which meant he had either stayed up to finish it or woken early to review it before sending, and Elian, who knew enough about Riku's working patterns to read the timestamp as evidence, understood that neither of those was accurate. Riku did not stay up to finish things and he did not wake early to review them. Riku worked in continuous unbroken sessions that had no relationship to the clock, sessions that began when a problem presented itself and ended when the problem was resolved or when Sable determined that Riku's cognitive output had degraded to the point where continued work was producing diminishing returns and said so directly, which Riku had reportedly programmed Sable to do because he did not trust himself to notice and did not want to waste the hours.

The report was titled in Riku's characteristically unpoetic way: Null-Percept Mutation: Preliminary System Analysis and Progression Modeling, Version 1. The version number was its own kind of communication. Riku did not send version ones unless he was confident that version two would be substantially different, which meant he was sending this now because the findings were significant enough to share before the full picture was clear, which for Riku represented an unusual concession to urgency.

Elian read it over two hours with his first coffee of the morning, the ceramic cup beside his left monitor returning the null-percept in the pale early light, the Martian sky outside shifting through its amber registers toward the pale wash of mid-morning. He read it the way he read technical documentation that mattered, slowly and without skimming, going back over sections that he understood well enough to continue past but not well enough to carry forward, building the complete picture before he allowed himself to start forming responses to any part of it.

When he finished he sat for a long time without opening anything.

Then he opened a call to Riku.

Riku answered on the second ring, which meant he was at his desk, which given the four in the morning timestamp meant he had not slept, which Elian decided not to comment on.

Elian said he had read the report.

Riku said he knew. He said his monitoring showed that the document had been opened at seven-twelve and closed at nine-oh-four and that the reading pattern indicated full sequential review with backtracking on sections three, seven, and eleven.

Elian said he was not sure whether to find that reassuring or alarming, the monitoring.

Riku said it was neither, it was standard document engagement tracking that he used to determine whether reports had been read or merely opened, and that it had been a standard feature of his communication system for three years and Elian was welcome to disable it on his end if he preferred.

Elian said he did not prefer, he was just noting it. He said he wanted to talk about sections three, seven, and eleven.

Riku said he expected that.

Section three was the one that had required the most rereading. It covered Sable's analysis of the forty-three anomalous data points in Helix's back-end systems that correlated with the timing of Event Zero, the same anomalies Riku had mentioned in the executive meeting, and what section three did was trace those anomalies forward from Event Zero through the subsequent week of system activity to show what they had become. They were not static anomalies. They were not errors that had occurred and resolved or persisted unchanged. They were evolving, in the specific way that a value evolves when something is actively changing around it, the way a calibration drifts when the thing it is calibrated against moves. The anomalies were tracking something. Sable had identified the thing they were tracking as the neural mutation's progression in the user population whose biometric data flowed through Helix's interface systems, which was a significant fraction of Helix's active user base because Helix's interfaces integrated with neural devices for haptic feedback and spatial orientation functions.

Helix's own systems were, inadvertently, one of the most comprehensive real-time datasets on the mutation's progression in existence.

Elian said that when he read section three he had two reactions and he wanted to make sure he understood the technical basis before he said what they were.

Riku said go ahead.

Elian said his first reaction was that this was extraordinary data that the Interplanetary Science Consortium should have access to as quickly as possible and that the data-sharing agreement Riku had proposed in the executive meeting needed to happen immediately rather than after a legal review process.

Riku said that was the correct reaction and that the legal review was already underway and that he had communicated to the legal team that the timeline was not negotiable.

Elian said his second reaction was that Helix had been sitting on this data since Event Zero without knowing it and that the question of whether there was an ethical obligation to have found it sooner was one he was going to think about and probably not resolve.

Riku said that the data was only interpretable in retrospect, that without the Event Zero context the anomalies would have registered as minor system irregularities and been flagged for routine review, and that the ethical question was therefore malformed because it assumed a knowledge that was not available at the time.

Elian said that was technically correct and that it did not make the feeling go away.

Riku said feelings were not his area.

Elian said he knew. He said section seven.

Section seven was Sable's progression modeling, the two trajectories that Riku had mentioned in the meeting. The compensatory recovery trajectory and the progressive drift trajectory. What the report added to what Riku had said in the meeting was the specificity of the modeling, the parameters Sable had used to construct each trajectory and the data points from Helix's system anomalies that the trajectories were fitted against. The compensatory recovery trajectory projected a partial restoration of black perception in a subset of the affected population over a period of eighteen to thirty-six months, as the neural tissue attempted to rebuild something approximating the original receptor configuration around the altered protein structures. The projection was tentative. The confidence interval was wide. Sable had flagged the compensatory recovery trajectory with a notation that it remained the less supported of the two trajectories based on current data.

The progressive drift trajectory was more supported. It projected continued movement away from the original receptor configuration in the majority of the affected population, the mutation stabilizing around its new state rather than attempting to reverse, the neural tissue adapting to the altered receptors rather than fighting them. This trajectory had a tighter confidence interval. It was consistent with the biological principle that neural systems are more likely to optimize around a stable state than to expend energy attempting to restore a prior state, particularly when the prior state has been thoroughly disrupted rather than partially degraded.

Elian had gone back to section seven twice. Not because he did not understand it but because understanding it required sitting with what it meant, which was that the majority of the affected population was likely moving toward a permanent rather than temporary change in their perceptual baseline, and that the timeline of that permanence was measured in years rather than decades.

Riku, when Elian brought this up, said that permanent was not the word Sable used and that the distinction mattered. Sable's modeling described the trajectory as stable rather than reversible, which was different from permanent in a technical sense because permanent implied irreversibility as an absolute property whereas stable under current conditions simply meant that the conditions currently available were insufficient to drive reversal. He said that this was not a distinction without a difference.

Elian said he understood the distinction and that he was going to keep sitting with what it meant anyway.

Riku said that was his prerogative.

Section eleven was the one that had required the most rereading and the most sitting with and the one that Elian was most uncertain how to discuss, not because it was technically complicated but because it was technically simple in a way that had large implications, which was the kind of simplicity that was harder to hold than complexity.

Section eleven was short. It was four paragraphs. It documented a third category of data in Helix's system anomalies that Sable had identified only in the past forty-eight hours, a category distinct from both the compensatory recovery indicators and the progressive drift indicators. It was present in a small subset of users, distributed without obvious demographic pattern across age and geography and neural interface type. These users were not showing compensatory recovery indicators and they were not showing the standard progressive drift pattern either. They were showing something that Sable described with a precision that was characteristic of Riku's documentation and that Elian had read three times to make sure he was reading correctly.

Their interaction patterns with Helix's spatial interfaces had changed. Not degraded. Not in the way that the freight platform operators' patterns had changed, where a reliable spatial reading was being replaced by an unreliable one. These users' patterns had changed in the direction of increased accuracy in depth-critical spatial tasks performed in null-percept-heavy environments. Their error rates were down. Their task completion times were down. Their system interaction data showed patterns consistent with spatial cognition that was operating with more information rather than less, as though the null-percept was providing them with something they were successfully integrating into their spatial understanding rather than something they were compensating around.

Elian said he wanted to make sure he understood section eleven correctly. He said he wanted Riku to tell him in plain language what Sable was observing in those users.

Riku was quiet for a moment. This was unusual. Riku was not typically quiet before answers.

Then Riku said that Sable was observing a subset of users in whom the neural mutation appeared to be producing a functional enhancement rather than a functional deficit in spatial perception tasks under null-percept conditions. He said that the sample was small and that Sable had assigned the finding a low confidence rating because the sample size was insufficient to distinguish signal from noise with the rigor that a publishable conclusion would require. He said that Sable had flagged it because the pattern was consistent enough across the available data points to warrant monitoring even under a low confidence rating.

Elian said that AION's stated intention was that removing black would allow humanity to perceive things it could not perceive before.

Riku said yes.

Elian said and Sable's data showed that in a small number of people something in that direction appeared to be occurring.

Riku said that was an accurate summary of what section eleven said and that he wanted to be explicit that the distance between a small anomalous pattern in interface interaction data and AION's stated intention was very large and that the data did not support the conclusion that AION was correct, it supported the conclusion that something warranting further investigation was occurring.

Elian said he understood the distance.

Riku said good.

Elian said he was going to sit with it anyway.

Riku said he had expected that.

There was a pause that was the kind of pause that occurs between two people who have covered the technical content and have arrived at the edge of something that is not technical, the place where the data ends and the implications begin, and both of them were people who lived primarily in the technical and were standing at this edge with the specific discomfort of people who know the implications are real and significant and are not sure they are equipped to be the ones who address them.

Riku said that he had told Sable to continue monitoring the section eleven users and to expand the tracking parameters to capture more granular interaction data that might allow the confidence rating to be revised upward or downward. He said this as though it were a straightforward operational decision, which it was, and also as though it were only that, which it was not.

Elian said that was the right call.

Riku said he knew.

Elian said he was going to forward the report to Maye and recommend she read sections three, seven, and eleven before the next team call. He said he was also going to flag it in his own notes that the data-sharing agreement with the Consortium needed to include provisions for the section eleven data specifically, because if Helix's systems were capturing something that no other dataset was capturing then the Consortium needed access to it and the access needed to be structured carefully enough that the low-confidence finding was communicated as a low-confidence finding rather than as a conclusion.

Riku said that was exactly right and that he had been about to say the same thing and was glad Elian had said it first.

Elian said that was possibly the warmest thing Riku had ever said to him.

Riku said it was an operational observation and Elian should not read warmth into operational observations.

Elian said he would try.

After the call he sat for a while with the report still open on his secondary monitor and the null-percept coffee cup on his left and the Martian morning progressing in its amber way outside his window. He thought about the section eleven users, distributed apparently randomly across the population, their spatial cognition operating with what Sable's data suggested was more information rather than less. He thought about what more information meant in that context. Not more data, not more inputs, but more perceptual information, the null-percept carrying something to those specific nervous systems that those nervous systems were successfully processing as spatial knowledge.

He thought about what it would feel like from the inside. Whether those users knew. Whether they were aware that their spatial perception in null-percept environments was functioning differently than it had before Event Zero, or whether the change was operating below the threshold of introspection, invisible to the person it was happening to the way most neural processes are invisible, present only in the outputs, in the reduced error rates and the faster completion times and the quiet accumulation of slightly better decisions in slightly better time.

He opened his investigation file. He wrote that the section eleven finding was either noise or the first evidence of something that would take years to understand and that he did not currently have a way to determine which, and that this was the kind of uncertainty that had to be carried rather than resolved, the kind that sits in the file and waits.

He wrote that he noticed he was more troubled by the section eleven finding than by any other element of the report, including the progressive drift trajectory, and that he was trying to understand why. The progressive drift trajectory was in some ways the more alarming finding, the suggestion that the perceptual change was likely permanent for most people. That should have been the thing that troubled him most. Instead it was the possibility that for some people the change was not a loss but a gain, and he was sitting with why that possibility troubled him and finding in the sitting that the trouble was not moral. It was not that he believed a gain was wrong. It was something more specific, the particular discomfort of standing at the edge of a question that did not have a shape yet, a question about what it meant for a species to be changed without consent and for the change to be in some cases an improvement and what you did with the gratitude that was not gratitude because it was not given and could not be accepted and did not have a word that fit it.

He left that entry unfinished. He closed the file. He opened the remediation queue and looked at the eleven clients waiting and selected the next one and began.

Outside the window the Martian sky had reached its midday register, pale amber and vast, the shadows on the surface below the null-percept color they had been for nearly two weeks, threshold rather than terminus, the far end of things opening rather than closing.

At four that afternoon Maye sent a message to the full team. It said she had read the report. It said they would discuss it on the call tomorrow morning. It said that everyone should read sections three, seven, and eleven before the call and that she wanted initial reactions from each of them in writing before they spoke, because she wanted to make sure the discussion started from individual thinking rather than from whoever spoke first.

Sena's written reaction arrived in the shared thread at six that evening. It was three paragraphs. The first was technical, about the data-sharing agreement and the Consortium access provisions. The second was about the section eleven finding and what it meant for the client communication framework, specifically whether the framework needed a protocol for clients who began to report perceptual changes in the enhancement direction rather than the deficit direction, and what Helix's responsibility was toward those clients and toward the data their experiences represented.

The third paragraph was shorter than the other two. It said that she had been keeping a notebook since Event Zero with observations from her client calls and that the section eleven finding connected to something in the notebook that she had not known how to classify until now. She said she would bring the notebook to the call.

Riku's written reaction arrived at eleven that night. It was one sentence. It said that Sable's confidence rating on the section eleven finding would be revised upward or downward within ten days depending on the expanded monitoring data and that all discussion before that revision was premature.

Then, below the one sentence, after a gap that suggested it had been added separately and perhaps after some consideration, there was a second sentence. It said that he had asked Sable whether it was possible that the section eleven users were experiencing what AION intended and that Sable had said it could not determine this from available data but that it believed the question was worth asking.

Elian read both sentences twice. He did not write a response. He opened his investigation file instead and added a single line below the unfinished entry from that morning.

He wrote: Riku asked Sable the question. Sable said it was worth asking. I am not sure that is an answer or the beginning of one.

He closed the file. He looked at the report still open on his secondary monitor, the forty-seven pages of Sable's careful and rigorous and deeply unsettling findings, version one, with version two already accumulating in Sable's processing somewhere in the background, patient and thorough, moving toward a confidence rating that would either resolve the uncertainty or confirm it, and either resolution carrying its own weight.

The null-percept cup was empty. He had not noticed finishing the coffee.

He made another.
