Dawn crept over Starfall Academy like a slow, golden tide, warming the rooftops, the training fields, and the courtyard stones. It did not warm Soren. Nothing could warm Soren right now. He sat on the edge of his bed, hunched over, clutching the tiny fox like a lifeline while his stomach performed gymnastics.
The fox, meanwhile, was asleep. Deeply asleep. Snoring.
Soren stared at him in disbelief. "How are you calm?😔 We're fighting a lion today."
The fox snorted in its sleep and rolled over, exposing its fluffy belly.
Kael, already dressed and polishing his spear, glanced over. "You should get ready."
"I'm not ready," Soren whispered.
"You should get ready anyway."
Soren groaned and flopped backward onto the bed. "Kael, I'm going to die."
Kael shrugged. "Probably not."
"That's not comforting!"
Kael strapped his spear to his back. "Look, Aldric's strong, but he's not unbeatable. And his lion cub is still young."
"His lion cub breathes fire!"
"Barely."
"Barely is still fire!"
Kael smirked. "You have a system. Use it."
Soren stared at the fox. "My system gave me a skill that makes him fluffier."
Kael nodded. "Yes. And it worked."
Soren opened his mouth to argue, then closed it. He hated that Kael was right.
The fox yawned, stretched, and blinked up at Soren with sleepy golden eyes.
Soren sighed. "Good morning. Today we die."
The fox chirped cheerfully.
The Walk of Doom
The academy grounds were unusually lively for dawn. Students whispered excitedly as Soren passed, some pointing, some laughing, some giving him pitying looks.
"Is that the guy fighting Aldric?"
"With an F‑minus fox?"
"He's dead."
"Should we take bets?"
Soren hunched his shoulders. "I hate this place."
Kael patted his back. "You'll be fine."
"You keep saying that, but your face says 'tragic funeral.'"
Kael didn't deny it.
The fox perched on Soren's shoulder, tail swishing confidently. Soren envied him. He wished he had even a fraction of that confidence. Or fluff. Fluff seemed useful.
The Duel Arena
The arena was a circular stone platform surrounded by rising stands. Students filled the seats, buzzing with anticipation. Some had brought snacks. Some had brought notebooks. One girl had brought a sketchpad and was already drawing Soren's "final moments."
Soren wanted to cry.
Aldric Dawnhelm stood on the opposite side of the arena, golden hair shining like he'd been born under a spotlight. His Sun‑Mane Lion cub sat beside him, mane glowing faintly with golden fire.
Soren whispered, "He looks like a prince."
Kael replied, "He is."
Soren's soul left his body. "I'm fighting royalty?!"
Kael shrugged. "Technically, you're fighting his beast."
"That's worse!"
The fox chirped and hopped onto Soren's head, tail draping over his face like a fluffy curtain.
Soren gently lifted him down. "Please don't block my vision. I need to see my death coming."
Instructor Veylan Sets the Rules
Instructor Veylan stepped into the arena, cloak billowing, silver eyes sharp enough to cut stone. The crowd fell silent.
"Duel rules," he said. "Beasts only. No lethal attacks. First beast unable to continue loses. Students who interfere will be expelled."
Soren raised a trembling hand. "Um… what counts as interference?"
"Anything."
Soren lowered his hand. "Okay. Good to know."
Aldric smirked. "Try not to embarrass yourself, commoner."
Soren bristled. "I'm not a commoner. I'm just… confused."
The fox puffed up in solidarity.
Veylan raised a hand. "Begin."
The Duel Begins
Aldric snapped his fingers. "Leo! Flame Pounce!"
The lion cub roared—adorably—and leapt forward, paws blazing with golden fire.
Soren screamed. "FOX—DO SOMETHING!"
The fox blinked.
Then activated its only combat skill.
FOX FLUFF (F‑Rank)
The fox exploded into maximum fluffiness.
The crowd gasped.
Aldric blinked. "What… is that?"
The lion cub skidded to a halt, confused by the sudden ball of fluff.
The fox wiggled.
The lion tilted its head.
Soren whispered, "This is the dumbest duel in history."
Kael nodded. "But it's working."
Aldric growled. "Leo! Attack!"
The lion lunged.
Soren panicked. "FOX—ROLL!"
The fox rolled.
Not gracefully.
Not strategically.
Just… rolled.
The lion missed completely and face‑planted into the dirt.
The crowd erupted in laughter.
Aldric turned red. "Get up! Again!"
The lion shook itself and charged.
Soren's heart pounded. "Fox—dodge! Jump! Hide! Something!"
The fox darted between the lion's legs, zipped around its tail, and hopped onto its back.
The lion froze.
The fox chirped triumphantly.
Soren blinked. "Wait… is he winning?"
Kael smirked. "Technically."
Aldric Gets Serious
Aldric clenched his fists. "Enough! Leo—Sun Burst!"
The lion cub's mane flared, glowing bright gold.
Soren panicked. "System! Help!"
A ding echoed.
[NEW TEMPORARY SKILL: PANIC COMMAND]
Boosts beast reaction speed when host is terrified.
Soren screamed, "FOX—JUMP!"
The fox leapt off the lion's back just as a burst of golden fire exploded outward.
The shockwave hit the fox mid‑air.
Soren's heart stopped. "NO!"
The fox hit the ground, rolled, and lay still.
The arena fell silent.
Aldric smirked. "Pathetic."
Soren's voice cracked. "Fox…?"
The fox twitched.
Then stood.
Barely.
But it stood.
Soren's eyes burned. "You're okay…"
The fox glared at the lion with surprising ferocity.
A ding echoed.
[TINY FOX HAS ENTERED: DETERMINED STATE]
Temporary boost to agility and focus.
The fox crouched low.
The lion charged.
The fox sprinted.
They collided—
And the fox darted under the lion's legs, tripped it, and sent it tumbling head‑first into the arena wall.
The lion slid down, dizzy and defeated.
The arena exploded with cheers.
Veylan raised his hand. "Winner: Soren Vale."
Victory (Somehow)
Soren collapsed to his knees, shaking.
The fox limped over and climbed into his arms.
Soren hugged him tightly. "You're amazing. You're incredible. You're—"
The fox licked his cheek.
A ding echoed.
[QUEST COMPLETE: SURVIVE THE DUEL]
Reward: Fox Flicker (E‑Rank) — short‑range burst movement.
Soren laughed weakly. "We actually survived…"
Kael approached, smirking. "Barely. But impressive."
Aldric stormed off, humiliated.
Soren held the fox close. "We did it… somehow."
The fox chirped proudly.
And for the first time since arriving in this world, Soren felt something strange.
Hope. For the first time in a while.
