Cherreads

Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6 — AFTERMATH OF A VERY ILLEGAL VICTORY

The cheers still rang in Soren's ears long after the duel ended. They followed him out of the arena, down the stone steps, and into the quiet courtyard like a swarm of confused, overly enthusiastic bees. He wasn't used to attention. He wasn't used to victory. He definitely wasn't used to surviving things he had no business surviving.

The tiny fox slept in his arms, curled into a warm ball of fluff, breathing softly. Completely unbothered. Completely unaware that it had just defeated a noble's fire‑breathing lion cub in front of half the academy.

Soren sat on a bench beneath a flowering tree, staring at the fox with a mixture of awe and disbelief.

"You," he whispered, "are terrifying."

The fox snored.

Kael dropped onto the bench beside him, spear resting against his shoulder. "You did well."

Soren blinked. "I didn't do anything."

"You screamed commands."

"That's not doing something. That's panicking loudly."

Kael shrugged. "It worked."

Soren groaned and buried his face in his hands. "Aldric is going to kill me."

"No," Kael said calmly. "He'll try to humiliate you first. Then he'll try to kill you."

Soren whimpered. "That's worse."

Kael smirked. "Welcome to academy politics."

Soren peeked at him through his fingers. "Is it too late to drop out?"

"Yes."

Soren groaned again.

---

The Walk Back

By the time they reached the dorms, the fox had woken up and was now perched on Soren's shoulder, tail swishing proudly. Students whispered as they passed.

"That's the guy who beat Aldric."

"With an F‑minus fox!"

"Is that even allowed?"

"Should we ask for his autograph?"

Soren nearly tripped. "Autograph?! Why?!"

Kael snorted. "You're famous now."

"I don't want to be famous! I want to be alive!"

The fox chirped proudly, as if fame was the natural result of its greatness.

Soren sighed. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

The fox chirped again.

Instructor Rowan Intervenes

As they reached the dorm steps, a familiar voice called out.

"Vale."

Soren froze.

Instructor Rowan approached, hands clasped behind his back, expression unreadable. His beast — a massive emerald‑furred wolf — padded silently beside him.

Soren swallowed. "H‑hello, Instructor."

Rowan studied him for a long moment. "Your duel was… unconventional."

Soren winced. "I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize. You won."

Soren blinked. "I… did?"

Rowan nodded. "And your fox displayed unusual determination. That is rare in low‑rank beasts."

The fox puffed up proudly.

Rowan continued, "I will be monitoring your progress closely."

Soren's stomach dropped. "Is that… good?"

"That depends on you."

Soren nodded weakly. "Right. Of course. Yes. I'll… try not to die."

Rowan's lips twitched — almost a smile. "See that you don't."

He walked away, wolf at his side.

Soren collapsed against the dorm wall. "I think I just got recruited into something."

Kael shrugged. "Probably."

"That's not comforting."

"It wasn't meant to be."

---

Back in the Room

Soren flopped onto his bed, fox still perched on his shoulder. Kael sat on his own bed, polishing his spear again.

Soren stared at the ceiling. "I can't believe we won."

Kael nodded. "You should celebrate."

"I don't know how to celebrate."

"Then rest."

Soren sighed. "I don't know how to rest either."

Kael rolled his eyes. "You're exhausting."

"I know."

The fox hopped onto Soren's chest and curled up, tail covering its nose.

Soren smiled faintly. "At least someone's relaxed."

A soft ding echoed.

Soren groaned. "Oh no. What now?"

A translucent screen appeared.

---

[NEW QUEST: RECOVERY AND REFLECTION]

Objective: Rest for at least 2 hours.

Reward: +1 Crafting Proficiency

Penalty: Fatigue debuff.

---

Soren blinked. "A quest… to nap?"

Kael snorted. "Your system knows you."

Soren glared. "I'm not that bad."

The fox chirped in agreement with Kael.

Soren sighed. "Traitor."

He lay back, letting the fox settle on his chest. His eyelids grew heavy almost immediately.

Kael's voice softened. "Sleep. You earned it."

Soren didn't argue.

---

Dreams of Foxes and Fire

Sleep came quickly, dragging him into a hazy dreamscape filled with glowing forests, floating runes, and tiny foxes wearing leaf armor. One fox — his fox — stood atop a stone pedestal, tail split into two shimmering wisps of light.

Soren reached out. "Are you… evolving?"

The fox chirped — but the sound echoed like a bell, deep and resonant.

A voice whispered through the dream.

"Potential unlocked… but not yet awakened."

Soren spun around. "Who said that?"

The forest shimmered.

The fox's eyes glowed.

"Grow stronger… together."

Soren reached for the fox—

And woke up.

---

A New Notification

The fox was still asleep on his chest, warm and soft. Sunlight filtered through the window. Kael was gone — probably training.

Soren rubbed his eyes. "That was… weird."

A ding sounded.

A new screen appeared.

---

[QUEST COMPLETE: RECOVERY AND REFLECTION]

Reward: +1 Crafting Proficiency]

Bonus: New Beast Evolution Hint Unlocked

Hint: "Light follows loyalty."

***

Soren blinked. "Light follows… loyalty?"

The fox stirred, blinking up at him.

Soren stroked its head. "Do you know what that means?"

The fox chirped.

Soren sighed. "Yeah, me neither."

He sat up slowly, fox climbing onto his shoulder.

"Okay," he whispered. "We survived a duel. We got a new skill. We got a weird dream. And apparently, you're closer to evolving."

The fox chirped proudly.

Soren smiled. "Let's try not to die before that happens."

The fox chirped again — confidently, as if dying was not on its schedule.

Soren stood, stretched, and took a deep breath.

"Right. Time to face the academy again."

He opened the door.

And immediately froze.

A crowd of students stood outside.

All staring at him.

All holding notebooks.

One girl stepped forward. "Soren Vale?"

Soren squeaked. "Y‑yes?"

She beamed. "Can you teach us how you trained your fox?!"

Soren's soul left his body.

The fox chirped proudly.
