The second guardian moved like an avalanche given legs. Every step shook the ground, sending leaves tumbling from the branches above. Moss peeled from its bark‑covered body as it lumbered forward, eyes burning with molten amber.
Soren had never wanted to run more in his life.
He didn't.
Mostly because his legs refused to work.
Kael grabbed his arm and yanked him behind a fallen log just as the guardian's massive root‑arm slammed into the earth where Soren had been standing.
The impact sent a shockwave through the clearing.
Soren screamed. "I WASN'T READY FOR THAT!"
Kael didn't look back. "You're never ready."
Aldric charged ahead, lion cub blazing with golden fire. "Leo! Strike!"
The lion cub leapt, claws igniting as it raked across the guardian's bark‑skin. Sparks flew. The guardian barely flinched.
Lira raised her hand. "Freeze its legs!"
Her frost‑wolf howled, sending a wave of ice racing across the ground. Frost crawled up the guardian's limbs, slowing its movement.
Only slightly.
Soren peeked over the log. "That's not enough! That's not nearly enough!"
The fox hopped onto the log beside him, two tails glowing like twin lanterns.
Soren grabbed him. "No. No. You stay here. You just evolved. You need rest. You need snacks. You need—"
The fox vanished.
Soren screamed. "STOP DOING THAT!"
The guardian swung its arm again, aiming for Aldric this time. The lion cub darted aside, but the blow still sent Aldric stumbling.
Kael lunged in, spear crackling with lightning. He struck the guardian's arm, sending a jolt through its body. The guardian roared, staggering back a step.
Lira seized the opening. "Wolf! Ice bind!"
Frost wrapped around the guardian's legs again, thicker this time, climbing higher.
The fox reappeared on the guardian's shoulder.
Soren's heart stopped. "NO—!"
The fox chirped.
Light burst from its tails.
A blinding flare.
The guardian reeled, swiping wildly at the air.
Kael shouted, "It's disoriented! Push!"
Aldric grinned. "Finally!"
Leo leapt again, flames blazing brighter than before.
The frost‑wolf lunged low, biting into the guardian's leg.
Kael struck its torso, lightning crackling across the bark.
The fox flickered, appearing beneath the guardian's chin, tails glowing brighter and brighter—
Soren felt the air shift.
He knew that feeling.
He'd felt it once before.
"Buddy—don't—!"
The fox launched upward, tails trailing light, and slammed into the guardian's face with a burst of force that rippled through the clearing.
The guardian toppled backward, crashing into the earth with a thunderous boom.
Silence.
Leaves drifted down like snow.
Soren stared, mouth open. "He… he did that?"
Kael nodded. "He did."
Lira exhaled. "That was impressive."
Aldric scowled. "Show‑off."
The fox landed lightly beside Soren, tails swaying proudly.
Soren scooped him up. "You're insane. You're incredible. You're—"
The fox licked his chin.
Soren melted. "Okay. Fine. You're perfect."
A low groan echoed from the fallen guardian.
Soren froze. "No. No no no. Stay down. Stay very down."
The guardian didn't rise.
It simply dissolved.
The bark cracked.
The moss crumbled.
The glowing eyes dimmed.
And then the entire body collapsed into a pile of roots and dust.
Kael lowered his spear. "It's done."
Lira nodded. "The catalyst's energy must have drawn it."
Aldric crossed his arms. "Good. Now we can move on."
Soren blinked. "Move on? Move on to what? We just fought two giant forest monsters! I need a nap. I need water. I need therapy."
Kael smirked. "Checkpoint Two."
Soren groaned. "I hate this place."
The fox chirped.
Soren sighed. "Okay. I hate it slightly less because of you."
A faint glow flickered in the air above the remains of the guardian.
Lira stepped forward. "Residual energy."
Kael nodded. "We should move before it attracts anything else."
Aldric turned toward the trees. "Then hurry up."
Soren followed, fox perched on his shoulder, two tails brushing against his cheek like warm feathers.
The forest felt different now.
Not hostile.
Not welcoming.
Just… aware.
Watching them.
Waiting.
Soren whispered, "This is going to get worse, isn't it?"
The fox chirped.
Soren groaned. "I knew it."
They stepped deeper into the forest.
The light dimmed.
The air thickened.
And somewhere far ahead, something howled.
Not a beast.
Not a guardian.
Something else.
Something older.
Kael slowed. "Did you hear that?"
Lira's frost‑wolf bristled.
Aldric's lion cub growled.
Soren whispered, "I hate this place."
The fox's tails glowed softly.
And the team moved toward the sound.
