Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

The forest was still humming with leftover magic when the light finally broke apart. It drifted away in soft, shimmering flakes, dissolving into the moss like falling stars.

Soren didn't breathe.

Couldn't breathe.

He stared at the small silhouette standing in the center of the clearing, heart pounding so hard it felt like it might crack his ribs.

The creature blinked.

Still fox‑shaped.

Still small.

Still unbearably cute.

But changed.

Its fur shimmered faintly, as if moonlight had woven itself into every strand. Two tails swayed behind it, each tipped with a soft glow that pulsed like a heartbeat. Its golden eyes—still warm, still familiar—now held a depth that hadn't been there before. A quiet intelligence. A spark of something ancient.

Soren whispered, "Buddy…?"

The fox chirped.

The same sound.

The same tone.

The same little creature he'd woken up with every morning.

Soren's knees gave out. He dropped to the ground and scooped the fox into his arms, hugging it so tightly it squeaked.

"You're okay," he breathed. "You're okay. You didn't explode. You didn't turn into a dragon. You didn't vanish into the void. You're okay."

The fox wriggled and chirped again, tails flicking proudly.

Aldric groaned behind him. "It's still tiny."

Lira stepped closer, frost‑wolf sniffing cautiously. "Size isn't the point. Its aura is stronger."

Kael nodded. "Much stronger."

Soren pulled back, holding the fox up. "You evolved. You actually evolved."

The fox puffed up proudly, tails swishing like banners.

A faint shimmer rippled around it.

Soren blinked. "What was that?"

Kael frowned. "Energy adjustment."

Lira shook her head. "No. That was intentional."

Aldric crossed his arms. "Whatever it is, it better be useful."

Soren glared. "He's always useful."

Aldric snorted. "He was a fluff ball."

"He was a strategic fluff ball."

The fox chirped in agreement.

Kael stepped forward. "Let's see what it can do."

Soren blinked. "Now? He just evolved!"

Lira nodded. "Better to understand his abilities before something else attacks."

Soren groaned. "I hate this place."

The fox hopped out of his arms and landed lightly on the ground, tails glowing faintly.

Soren's breath caught. "Okay… show us something. Anything. But please don't explode."

The fox chirped.

Then moved.

Not flickered.

Not dashed.

Not rolled.

Moved.

One moment it was in front of Soren.

The next it was perched on a branch.

Then behind Lira.

Then beside Kael.

Then back in front of Soren.

All in a single heartbeat.

Soren screamed. "WHAT WAS THAT?!"

Kael's eyes widened. "Spatial shift."

Lira's voice was calm. "Short‑range. Controlled. Impressive."

Aldric muttered, "Unfair."

The fox chirped proudly.

A soft pulse of light rippled from its tails.

Kael inhaled sharply. "My body feels lighter."

Lira nodded. "Movement enhancement."

Aldric scowled. "Don't tell me the fluff ball is a support beast."

Soren hugged the fox. "He's perfect."

The fox chirped smugly.

A faint glow flickered around its paws.

Soren blinked. "What now?"

The fox stepped forward.

Light gathered around its tails.

And then—

A burst of radiance exploded outward, bright enough to make everyone shield their eyes.

Aldric cursed. "Warn us next time!"

Lira blinked rapidly. "Blinding flare. Useful."

Kael smirked. "Very useful."

Soren stared at the fox. "You're incredible."

The fox chirped.

A low rumble shook the ground.

Soren froze. "What was that?"

Kael's expression sharpened. "Something big."

Lira's frost‑wolf growled.

Aldric groaned. "Of course. Of course there's more."

The trees at the edge of the clearing trembled.

Branches snapped.

And a massive shape stepped into view—twice the size of the guardian they'd just defeated, covered in moss and bark, eyes glowing like molten amber.

Soren screamed. "WHY IS THERE ANOTHER ONE?!"

Lira's voice was steady. "Because the Dawnseed was a major catalyst. The forest is reacting."

Aldric snarled. "Good. I needed a warm‑up."

Soren grabbed the fox. "No! No warm‑ups! No more bosses! We just finished one!"

The fox hopped out of his arms and stood in front of him, tails glowing brighter.

Soren whispered, "Buddy…?"

The fox chirped.

Then stepped forward.

The guardian roared.

The fox's tails flared.

Light exploded outward.

Kael shielded his eyes. "It's testing its new power."

Lira nodded. "Let it."

Aldric grinned. "Finally. Something interesting."

Soren screamed. "NO! NOT INTERESTING! SAFE! I WANT SAFE!"

The fox vanished.

A heartbeat later—

A shockwave rippled through the clearing.

The guardian staggered, skidding across the moss.

Soren's jaw dropped. "He… hit it?"

Kael nodded. "Hard."

Lira's eyes widened. "Very hard."

Aldric smirked. "Good."

The fox reappeared beside Soren, tails flicking proudly.

Soren scooped him up. "You're incredible. You're terrifying. You're my favorite thing in this awful place."

The fox chirped.

The guardian rose again, shaking off moss and dirt.

Kael stepped forward. "We finish this together."

Lira nodded. "Agreed."

Aldric smirked. "Try to keep up."

Soren groaned. "I hate this place."

The fox chirped louder.

And the team charged.
