Chapter 26 - The Black Flash Drive

When they think you're exposed… that's when you've only just begun.

Inside the white room, the questions came one after another.

Ian Vale sat restrained, wired to a polygraph system.

Monitors tracked his pulse.

His breathing.

Micro-muscle contractions.

On the table beside him lay chemical enhancers Marcus Heller had prepared to heighten neural response.

"Who helped you?"

A brief pause.

"Red Creek."

Heller watched the screen.

Stable readings.

No deception.

Next question:

"Where are your research files stored?"

"On the flash drive."

Heartbeat steady.

"Where did you conduct your experiments?"

"In a university lab. At night."

Again...no fluctuation.

Heller exchanged a glance with the attending physician.

"He's telling the truth."

Heller stepped closer.

Studied the young man.

No defiance.

No smirk.

No panic.

Just a gifted student who had crossed a line.

"Unstrap him," Heller ordered.

"We'll see."

In another room packed with advanced equipment, the black flash drive was inserted into a secure system.

Massive screens lit up.

Ian entered the password.

Files appeared.

Equations.

Chemical structures.

Reaction tables.

Meticulous technical detail.

Heller's expression shifted.

A slow smile.

"Finally."

He turned to his men.

"Take him to holding."

Ian was escorted calmly.

No resistance.

No words.

Behind him, Heller remained in front of the screens, absorbing what he believed was victory.

At the remote operations center

A small green signal blinked.

Then began pulsing.

Derya Aksoy stood instantly.

"It's live."

One of the operators looked up.

"You're certain?"

"Yes."

She grabbed her laptop.

Secured her weapon.

"Move."

Within seconds, engines ignited.

Phase Two was underway.

In the corridor toward holding

Four men escorted Ian.

They didn't grip him tightly.

Didn't treat him like a threat.

To them, he was drained.

Defeated.

At the holding room door, Ian spoke calmly:

"I need the restroom."

One guard hesitated.

"Just unlock one cuff."

As the guard reached for the key

Ian lifted a hand to his head.

Scratched lightly.

Plucked a strand from the wig.

A strand tipped with a microscopic metallic barb.

When the guard leaned closer

A barely perceptible sting touched his wrist.

He didn't react.

One second.

Then a deep inhale.

Another.

His breath caught.

Air thickened.

He began choking.

A second guard stepped forward.

Ian had already drawn another strand...this one tipped with a different compound.

A subtle puncture at the base of the neck.

The man froze.

Then laughed.

Uncontrollably.

Loud.

Hysterical.

The remaining two reacted in confusion.

"What's happening?!"

Ian didn't slow.

Two more strands.

One for each.

Within seconds

One collapsed into a corner, trembling in pure fear.

Eyes darting at invisible threats.

The other clutched the air.

"I can't see... I can't "

The fourth gasped desperately for breath.

Ian stood.

Calm.

Walked past them.

He knew the layout.

When they thought he was unconscious

He had been listening.

Recording.

Mapping.

Years earlier, he had implanted a sublingual micro-serum

A neuro-adaptive compound countering sedatives and cognitive suppressants.

He had never lost consciousness in the car.

He had waited.

Observed.

Stored every sound.

Every turn.

Every voice.

He moved swiftly.

Reached the rear exit.

Door partially ajar.

Outside

A vehicle idled.

One of Heller's guards lay motionless beside it.

Behind the wheel

Derya.

"Get in!"

He didn't hesitate.

Leapt inside.

The car tore away.

Behind them

Alarms erupted.

Upstairs, Heller watched a monitor freeze.

A voice crackled through his comm:

"Sir, he "

Heller cut the line.

His jaw hardened.

"He was never unconscious."

He entered the corridor.

Saw his four men

One laughing uncontrollably.

One sobbing.

One thrashing.

One choking.

Heller spoke quietly.

"He entered the cage… willingly."

Inside the speeding car, Derya glanced at him.

"Did you get what we needed?"

Ian caught his breath.

"More than they think."

He looked back at the shrinking facility lights.

"Now…"

He paused.

"The war begins."
