Chapter 39: I Don't Lack Anything Now

When a zombie apocalypse breaks out, what are the three most critical necessities for an ordinary person?

A safe shelter, an abundant food supply, and clean water.

For Suyan, a safe shelter was a given. With his Nen, he could literally act like Homelander in this world without breaking a sweat.

There was probably no place on Earth safer than right next to him.

Or, arguably, right next to Saeko Busujima.

Wink.

Next: an abundant food supply.

This was vital.

It was almost impossible to imagine a former student of the prestigious University of Tokyo knowing a zombie apocalypse was coming and not hoarding supplies like a maniac.

The instinct to hoard was practically hardwired into the DNA of every top-tier student.

When they work, they hoard money to buy property. After they get married, they hoard secret stashes of cash. When they play video games, they hoard every consumable resource they find until the credits roll.

Suyan was no exception.

Months ago, he had dug out the property deed to Rika Minami's house and sent Shizuka to the bank to take out a massive loan against it.

Perhaps her status as a respected doctor smoothed things over, because the bank had approved the massive loan immediately and transferred the funds without a second thought.

Suyan then pooled that money with Shizuka's life savings and bought out a mid-sized commercial cold storage meat warehouse nearby.

He had packed it with enough frozen meat to feed them for over a decade—long enough for the meat to literally become 'zombie meat' itself.

In fact, the Nen technique Suyan had used to seal the infirmary door was the very same technique he had painstakingly perfected while trying to completely seal that warehouse from the inside.

Food was absolutely not going to be an issue.

Lastly: clean water.

The emphasis wasn't on water, but on clean.

Suyan vividly remembered a specific plot point from the Chinese zombie comic, Zombie Brother, that had always stuck with him.

In that universe, the source of the zombie virus was a thousand-year-old corpse named Long You, who awoke in the modern era.

Because Long You awakened at the bottom of the city's river, the virus leaked from his body and contaminated the entire municipal water supply.

Anyone who drank tap water in that city instantly mutated into a zombie.

The part that truly left an impression on Suyan was an early arc set at the airport.

The military had secured the airport to evacuate civilians. But a corrupt, greedy businessman decided to make a quick buck by filling empty water bottles with contaminated tap water and selling them to the desperate survivors.

As a result, everyone waiting for a flight who bought his water turned into a zombie, dooming the entire evacuation zone.

Suyan didn't know the exact mechanics or infectivity of the virus in this world.

He didn't know if the water supply would eventually become contaminated, turning tap water into a lethal biohazard.

But he wasn't going to take any chances.

Even though they lived right next to a river, Suyan had applied his hoarding mentality to water as well, stockpiling a massive reserve of bottled drinking water.

Compared to industrial quantities of meat, bottled water was practically free.

Secure in a safe shelter, sitting on mountains of food, and possessing endless clean water...

Suyan felt like Shendu from Jackie Chan Adventures after collecting all twelve Talismans.

He could confidently shout to the heavens, I don't lack anything now!

All he had to do was follow the plan. Let Saeko use Reizan to continuously mow down hordes of zombies, and eventually, the two of them would become absolute stat monsters.

If they ever somehow crossed over into the Hunter x Hunter universe, he was fairly confident they could punch out Meruem, the Chimera Ant King—the absolute ceiling of power in that world—with a single strike.

And that was despite neither of them being Enhancement Nen users.

Do you understand what pure, unadulterated stat-checking means?

After dinner, Suyan turned on the television.

Sitting comfortably on the sofa, with Rei shooting him envious glances from the side, Suyan held a YukimiBotamon in each arm, gently stroking their incredibly soft, pure white fur.

YukimiBotamon: (>ᆺ<)

As Fresh-level Digimon, the YukimiBotamon were objectively adorable.

It was almost impossible for an ordinary girl to look at them and not immediately want to pet them.

If you told a girl you had a cat that could do backflips, she might not care.

But if you told a girl you had a real, live YukimiBotamon at home? She'd probably break into your house just to look at it.

They were the ultimate chick magnets.

The only problem was that both YukimiBotamon were incredibly aloof and independent. Aside from their masters—Suyan and Shizuka—they absolutely refused to let anyone else touch them. Even Saeko, despite being bound to Suyan by Contract, wasn't granted petting privileges.

And even with Shizuka, they only tolerated being held and petted. They never actively sought out her affection; they reserved all their clingy, affectionate behavior exclusively for Suyan.

Rei stared intently at Suyan, her eyes practically begging.

It was painfully obvious how badly she wanted to pet the little white fluffballs.

But Suyan completely ignored her silent pleas.

Yes, he could easily command the YukimiBotamon to let Rei pet them, scoring him some easy points with the girl.

But he refused to do so.

In his eyes, the YukimiBotamon and Rei were on equal footing.

In fact, if he were being brutally honest, the Digimon who had been by his side for over a year held a higher place in his heart than the girl he had only truly known for a few weeks.

Not to mention the fact that these two little fluffballs had the potential to eventually evolve into Angewomon.

If the YukimiBotamon didn't want to be touched, he wasn't going to force them.

Seeing that Suyan wasn't taking the hint and wasn't saying anything, Rei resorted to staring at him with deep resentment.

"This outbreak hit fast and hard, didn't it?"

Suyan completely ignored Rei's glare, sighing as he watched the news broadcast playing on the TV.

In just half a day, the news anchors were frantically reporting massive, violent riots breaking out simultaneously across multiple major cities in Japan.

Obviously, it was the zombies.

Even though the original anime was infamously incomplete, and Suyan didn't know how the canon story ended, he was willing to bet his life that the outbreak would only get worse. It was fundamentally unsolvable.

The logic was simple: this was anime.

A ragtag group of high school students could effortlessly hack and slash their way through endless hordes of the undead.

But a heavily armed, technologically advanced modern nation? They would sink faster than the Titanic hitting an iceberg.

High schoolers saving the world.

It was a tale as old as time, a core tenet of the medium.

That's just how anime worked.

Suyan didn't shed a single tear for this doomed world, because the real show was about to start...

"Suyan..."

Saya Takagi suddenly spoke up, her voice trembling slightly. "I know we aren't close, and I know I have absolutely no right to ask you this. But I have to."

"If it's you... I know you can do it easily."

"Please. Please take me home. I... I'll do anything you want!"

Having reached her breaking point, Saya suddenly dropped to her knees, assuming a formal seiza bow on the floor, pleading with Suyan for salvation.
