"W-well, when I came here with the chairman, you were with him, right?" She began to fidget, her words tumbling out in a frantic rush. "I-I think we interrupted something that may be important. L-like something from the project... or something important, like I said! Haha!"
It was so sudden that it caught me off guard. The slight tremor in her voice and the way she stuttered suggested she was genuinely nervous while asking that. Is she actually giving me a way out? Did she figure it out and is just being kind? I wondered, my pulse quickening as I searched her face for a sign of her true thoughts.
"It wasn't anything important," I said, testing the waters to see how she would react. "Nothing that has to do with the project." I kept my voice level, though my mind was racing with a dozen different scenarios.
"Oh. I—I see." She looked down at her shoes, her fingers twisting together in a display of clear unease.
