"You can fool that idiot, but not me." I listened quietly, the distant rumble of city traffic filling the air. I was already aware of what was coming. "You like your boss, don't you, Layna?" With the same blunt coldness that had made us friends years ago, Sophie stared at me. I couldn't even look her in the eye.
My scuffed shoes were all I could see, and the warmth of my clenched hands in my pockets was the only thing keeping me grounded. "Let's just forget that we know the answer to that," I eventually whispered, feeling the knot in my heart climb its way up to my throat. "Please."
This sucks, man.
"Sigh. Life's a b*tch. He had to be gay, too. What the hell."
"Sophie." I finally turned to look at her, hoping she would see that I was wholeheartedly begging her to drop it. "I'm aromantic."
"Right." It was her turn to avoid my gaze this time, her expression softening with a hint of pity and the emotion I was battling to suppress. "You're right."
