"Miss Burry, welcome back. Please, come in."
"Yes, hello, Sir."
I felt as though time had frozen for a heartbeat the moment I saw him. He was already standing on the far side of the office, but he began walking over to me as soon as I stepped inside. Instead of gesturing toward the desk, he invited me to take a seat in the small lounge area he kept for more informal chats. He seemed happy—vibrant and full of energy. It was a mood I couldn't possibly match, or rather, one I refused to match even if I wanted to.
Stay calm. I sat down, my movements stiff as I arranged my notes and the documents I'd brought on the low centre table. I kept my gaze fixed on my lap, avoiding his eyes at all costs. I needed to get this over with quickly. "Okay, so. Today, regarding the team meeting—"
"Sorry to interrupt, Miss Burry. But I've been meaning to ask. Have you been alright?"
"Pardon?" I blinked, finally looking up in surprise. Why is he suddenly asking me that?
