Chapter 2 - Chapter Two War in Silk

Elena could not sleep

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the ballroom. Crystal shattering her father's face Andrew's smile

Has it always looked that cold?

Dawn crept slowly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the room Dominic had given her. The Hudson shimmered silver in the early light, deceptively peaceful.

She hadn't cried.

That unsettled her most.

Instead, her mind replayed every conversation she'd ever had with Andrew Caldwell. Every touch, every promise, every carefully rehearsed line about building a future together.

Had she been that blind?

A soft knock broke her thoughts.

She stiffened.

The door opened slightly, but not enough for anyone to enter uninvited.

Miss Whitmore? A woman's voice came through

Yes, she answered.

A tall brunette stepped inside carrying a tray. She wore tailored black slacks and a fitted blazer, a firearm visible at her hip.

My name is Sofia, she said calmly. I handle security logistics.

Security logistics?

That was one way to phrase it.

I'm not hungry, Elena said.

That's fine, Mr. Russo said I should make sure you had options.

Elena hesitated. He said that?

Yes.

Something in Sofia's tone held respect, not fear, not an obligation.

Respect.

Sofia set the tray down near the window.

You're not locked in, she added.

Elena's head snapped up. Excuse me?

You can move around the house. There are guards outside the perimeter, but you're not confined to this room.

Suspicion flared. Why?

Because Mr. Russo doesn't cage what he protects.

The words hit harder than they should have.

Before Elena could respond, Sofia's earpiece crackled.

Her expression shifted.

He's in the study, she said quietly. And you should probably hear this yourself.

Dominic's study felt like entering the center of a storm.

Dark wood shelves, Maps on the wall, A long table scattered with files and tablets. Men stood around it focused, tense.

Dominic stood at the head.

He looked up the seconds she stepped inside.

Relief flashed across his face before it vanished behind control.

You shouldn't be here, one of the men muttered.

She stays, Dominic said calmly.

Silence followed.

Elena crossed her arms, I'd prefer not to be discussed like inventory.

Dominic's mouth twitched faintly at that.

Caldwell released a statement, he said.

He tapped a remote. A television screen flickered to life.

Andrew Caldwell appeared behind a polished podium calm and devastated.

My fiancée was taken last night by violent extremists connected to organized crime, Andrew said gravely. We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure her safe return.

Elena's stomach dropped.

Violent extremists.

Are you serious? She whispered.

Andrew continued.

I urge the public to remain calm. This attack was not random. It was targeted and I promise you whoever is responsible will pay.

The screen cut to footage of the wedding aftermath, police tape, and Reporters.

Her father stood before the microphones.

She was stolen from us he said, his voice breaking convincingly. My daughter is a victim.

Elena let out a hollow laugh.

Victim?

Dominic muted the television.

He's building sympathy, one of the men said. Public opinion is turning.

Of course it is, Dominic replied positioning himself.

For what? Elena asked.

Dominic looked at her.

For retaliation.

The word hung heavy.

You said there was a truce, she reminded him.

There was."l

And now?

It's broken.

Her pulse quickened. Because of me.

Yes

The honesty should have angered her, but instead, it felt like gravity.

What does retaliation look like? She asked quietly.

Dominic studied her carefully before answering.

Public raids, Asset freezes, manufactured evidence, and possibly a task force targeting us.

You think he can do that?

He's already trying.

As if summoned by the words, one of the men stepped forward.

Two of our warehouses were hit this morning

Dominic's jaw tightened

Casualties? No.

A visible breath of relief passed through the room

Elena absorbed everything.

This wasn't chaos, this was chess.

And she was the queen piece both sides were willing to move.

Why not just send me back? She said suddenly

The room went silent.

Dominic's gaze sharpened. No.

You said he wanted leverage. If I go back

You won't.

Her temper flared. You don't get to decide that

The air shifted instantly, not hostile, charged.

Dominic stepped closer.

Yes, he said quietly, I do.

Her breath hitched but she refused to step back.

Because you kidnapped me? She challenged

Because if you step outside those gates, you become his proof.

Proof of what?"l

That I'm desperate.

His voice dropped lower.

And desperate men are easier to destroy.

Something flickered in his eyes.

Not fear for himself, for her.

You're not thinking clearly, she said.

I'm thinking exactly as I should.

She stepped even closer.

So what? I stay hidden while you wage war?

His jaw flexed.

I will end this quickly.

You can't promise that.

No.

That quiet admission unsettled her more than bravado would have.

You could get people killed.

I know.

And that doesn't bother you?

It always bothers me.

She searched his face for cruelty

There was none but only a burden.

You really believe he would hurt me. She said softly

Dominic didn't hesitate

Yes.

The certainty in his voice chilled her.

Why are you so sure? He hesitated just barely.

Because I've seen what men like him do when they lose control.

A flicker of something darker crossed his expression.

Memories and pain.

You've lost someone before, she said carefully.

His eyes snapped to hers.

Don't.

The single word was quiet but final.

She swallowed.

For a moment, the room faded again. Just them standing too close.

You don't trust me, she said.

I don't trust anyone, that's not an answer then his gaze softened slightly.

I trust you to survive

Her heart stumbled and that's different.

Yes.

Silence stretched between them.

One of the men cleared his throat awkwardly. We should continue.

Dominic stepped back, mask sliding into place.

Clear the lower docks he ordered. Shift operations north no retaliation yet.

No retaliation?

Elena noticed

You're not striking back? she asked once the others dispersed.

Not yet. Why?

He looked at her

Because I won't escalate this unless I have to.

That surprised her.

You said the truce is broken. It is.

Then why hold back?

His gaze lingered on her face.

Because war has consequences.

The unspoken words hung in the air.

For you.

A sudden commotion erupted outside the study.

A guard rushed in.

They've issued a warrant.

The room went still.

For who? Dominic asked calmly.

The guard swallowed.

For you.

Elena's stomach dropped.

Dominic didn't move. Didn't react.

Just inhaled slowly on what grounds?

Kidnapping. Domestic terrorism.

The words felt surreal.

Elena stepped forward. This is insane.

Dominic's eyes met hers.

I told you he would move.

Sirens wailed faintly in the distance.

Not close but coming.

The house felt tighter suddenly.

The walls are thinner.

You should run, she whispered.

A faint smile touched his lips.

I don't run. Dominic stepped close enough that she could feel the warmth of him again.

Listen to me carefully, he said, voice low and steady. If law enforcement comes through those gates, you say nothing.

I won't lie.

I'm not asking you to.

His hand lifted slowly paused inches from her face.

She didn't pull away.

Just survive this, he murmured.

Her pulse hammered against her throat. You act like I'm the fragile one.

His fingers brushed lightly against a loose strand of her hair, tucking it behind her ear.

You are the only thing in this house I can't afford to lose.

Her breath caught.

The sirens grew louder and closer

And for the first time since he'd taken her

She wasn't afraid of him.
