Chapter 6 - Chapter Six: The price of loyalty

Morning in Chicago came wrapped in cold gray clouds, the kind that hung low over the skyline like a warning. From the tall windows of the penthouse, the city looked quiet, almost peaceful but Elena knew better.

Nothing about her life was peaceful anymore.

She stood near the glass, arms wrapped around herself, watching the thin lines of traffic crawl along the streets far below.

Seven days since Dominic had taken her.

Seven days since her world had been ripped apart.

And somehow, impossibly, she was still here.

Alive. Untouched. Confused.

Elena still didn't understand him.

A kidnapper who didn't act like one.

A mafia king who treated her with an odd, unsettling restraint.

A man who could terrify a room with a single glance… yet had wrapped his coat around her shoulders when she shivered the night before.

The contradiction was driving her insane.

Behind her, the door opened.

She didn't turn immediately. She already knew who it was.

Dominic moved through the room with the quiet confidence of a man who owned everything he touched. His dark suit was perfectly tailored, his hair slightly damp from the shower, the scent of expensive cologne filling the air.

Elena.

Her name rolled off his tongue low and smooth.

She turned slowly.

Are you ever going to stop saying my name like that? she asked.

Like what?

Like you already own me. His jaw tightened slightly.

He walked closer, stopping a few feet away. His dark eyes studied her carefully.

I don't own you, he said calmly.

Elena raised a brow.

You kidnapped me.

Yes.

You keep me locked in your penthouse.

Yes.

You have armed guards outside every door. Yes.

She folded her arms.

That sounds a lot like ownership.

A faint, almost amused breath left his nose.

It's protection.

Her laugh was sharp.

From what?

Dominic didn't answer immediately.

That silence alone made Elena uneasy.

Finally, he said quietly, From people who would kill you without hesitation.

Her heart skipped.

Why?

His gaze held hers.

Because of me.

The room fell silent.

Elena searched his face, looking for a lie. For manipulation. For some cruel game.

But Dominic expression held nothing but hard truth.

Your enemies want me dead? she asked slowly.

They want leverage.

And I'm leverage.

Yes.

Her stomach twisted.

For a moment, Elena wished she had never asked.

She looked away from him, staring back at the city.

You ruined my life, she whispered.

The words hung in the air like smoke.

Dominic didn't argue.

Didn't defend himself.

Didn't deny it.

Instead, he walked to the bar and poured himself a glass of whiskey.

I saved it, he said quietly.

Elena spun toward him.

You what?

He took a slow sip.

Your father made a deal.

Her chest tightened.

What kind of deal?

Dominic's eyes darkened.

The kind where daughters become bargaining chips.

Her stomach dropped.

That's not true.

Dominic's voice hardened.

It is.

No.

He sold you.

The words slammed into her like a punch.

Elena shook her head violently.

No. My father would never

He already did.

Her breath came faster.

You're lying.

I wish I was. Dominic set the whiskey glass down with a soft click.

Your father owed millions to a man named Victor Belmonte.

The name meant nothing to Elena.

But the way Dominic said it made her blood run cold.

He runs the east coast trafficking network, he continued.

The room felt like it tilted.

Trafficking.

No, Elena whispered.

Your father couldn't pay.

Her throat closed.

So he offered something else.

Elena already knew the answer.

But she still forced the words out.

Me.

Adrian nodded once.

Yes.

Silence crashed over the room.

Elena felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her.

All her life, her father had been controlling.

Strict.

Cold.

But this was something else entirely.

Tears burned her eyes.

You're lying, she whispered again.

But the conviction was gone.

Dominic walked closer.

Elena.

Don't.

She backed away from him.

Don't say my name like you care.

His voice softened.

You think I wanted this?

I think you're a criminal who saw an opportunity.

His eyes darkened.

I took you before Belmonte could.

Her chest rose and fell quickly.

And that makes you a hero?

No.

Dominic stepped closer.

It makes me the lesser evil.

The words hit her harder than anything else he'd said.

Because some part of her hated how believable it sounded.

Elena wiped angrily at the tears on her cheeks.

I want proof.

You'll get it.

When?

Soon.

She glared at him.

You expect me to just sit here until then?

For now.

Her temper snapped.

I'm not your prisoner.

Yes, Dominic said quietly.

You are.

The calm honesty in his voice infuriated her.

Elena turned away, breathing hard.

You're unbelievable.

Maybe.

But I'm also the only reason you're alive.

The truth in those words echoed through the room.

Elena hated it.

Hated him.

And hated the way her heart twisted with fear that he might actually be telling the truth.

Just then

A sharp knock hit the door.

Dominic's entire posture shifted instantly

Come in.

The door opened, revealing Marco.

Dominic's right-hand man looked tense.

Boss, Marco said.

Dominic's voice dropped.

What happened?

Marco glanced briefly at Elena before speaking.

Belmonte made a move.

The air in the room turned deadly.

Dominic's eyes sharpened.

Where?

Marco swallowed.

Your warehouse on the south side.

Elena saw something dangerous flash across his face.

How bad?

Six men dead.

A heavy silence fell.

His jaw clenched.

And the message?

Marco hesitated.

They left a message for you.

Dominic's voice went cold.

Say it.

Marco looked uncomfortable.

They wrote it in blood on the wall.

Elena's stomach churned.

Dominic didn't blink.

What did it say?

Marco finally said it.

Return the girl.

The room went still.

Elena's pulse pounded in her ears.

Dominic slowly turned toward her.

For a moment, their eyes locked.

Something fierce burned in his gaze.

Possessive.

Protective.

Terrifying.

Looks like your father's buyer is getting impatient, he said quietly.

Elena's blood ran cold.

Then let me go, she said.

His response came instantly.

No.

Her voice rose.

You can't keep me here forever!

Dominic stepped closer.

His voice dropped to a low, dangerous whisper.

I can.

His dark eyes locked onto hers.

And I will.

Elena's heart pounded.

Why?

Dominic's expression hardened.

Because if Belmonte gets you...

His voice turned lethal.

You won't survive the night.

The room fell into silence again.

And for the first time since she'd been taken

Elena realized something terrifying.

Dominic Russo wasn't the villain of her story.

He was the man standing between her and something far worse.

And somehow, that realization scared her even more.
