Chapter 9 - chapter 9: The Attempt

Andrew Caldwell smiled like nothing had changed, like she hadn't walked away from him in front of a room full of power and expectation, like he hadn't just lost the one thing he had been so certain belonged to him. There was no strain in his expression, no visible crack in the polished surface he wore so well. If anything, he looked more composed than ever, as though the shift in control had only made him more dangerous instead of less.

Elena stopped a few feet in front of him, holding her ground with deliberate stillness. Her spine remained straight, her chin lifted just enough to signal control, even though her pulse was beginning to pick up beneath the calm exterior she forced herself to maintain. She could feel Dominic behind hernot touching, not interfering, but present in a way that steadied her more than she wanted to admit. He didn't need to move forward to make his presence known. It filled the space anyway.

Elena, Andrew said smoothly, his voice carrying the same familiarity he had always used, as though this were just another conversation between them. You look well.

I'm alive, she replied, her tone even, though the weight behind the words was unmistakable. She watched his eyes carefully, searching for the truth behind the practiced ease.

Something flickered there for a fraction of a second, something sharp and calculating but it vanished almost instantly, replaced by that same effortless charm.

That's all I ever wanted, he said.

The lie was seamless, polished to perfection, delivered without hesitation. It was the kind of lie people believed because it sounded so simple, so reasonable. But Elena knew better now. She could see the manipulation behind the softness, the control hidden beneath the calm.

She let out a quiet breath, steadying herself before speaking again. You should be careful with statements like that, she said. People might start believing you.

His smile tightened, just slightly, enough to reveal the irritation beneath the surface. Have you come to your senses? he asked, lowering his voice as though this were a private matter between them.

No, she said. I've come to say goodbye.

The words landed harder than she expected. For a brief moment, something real broke through his composure a flash of anger, and disbelief but it was gone almost as quickly as it appeared. Control returned, smooth and practiced.

You don't understand what you're doing, Andrew murmured, his tone quieter now, more dangerous.

I understand enough, she replied.

His gaze darkened, dropping just enough that only she could hear him. You're standing beside a man who will get you killed.

Elena didn't look back. She didn't need to. I'm standing beside someone who didn't sell me.

Silence followed sharp, cutting, and heavy with meaning. The words hung between them like a blade, leaving no room for interpretation.

Behind her, Dominic shifted.

Not forward, not aggressively, but just enough that the space itself seemed to change. The air tightened, sharpened by his presence alone. Andrew noticed. Of course he did. Men like them always noticed shifts in power.

Russo, Andrew said calmly.

Caldwell.

Dominic's response was quiet, but it carried weight history, warning, inevitability. There was no need for raised voices or dramatic gestures. The tension between them spoke loudly enough.

You've made this unnecessarily complicated, Andrew continued, straightening slightly as though reasserting control.

I disagree, Dominic replied. I think I simplified it.

A humorless laugh escaped Andrew. You think this ends here?

Dominic's voice dropped, steady and cold. I think you already lost.

Andrew smiled again, but it didn't reach his eyes this time. We'll see.

He stepped closer to Elena, just enough to invade her space, to test boundaries, to provoke. His voice lowered, turning intimate in a way that made her skin crawl. You won't be able to stay under his protection forever.

Elena held her ground, refusing to give him even an inch. I don't need forever.

His expression hardened. Everyone does.

And then he stepped back.

Too easily.

Too calmly.

That was when Elena felt it.

Not tension.

Not confrontation.

Something else.

Something beneath the surface.

Preparation.

Dominic, she said quietly, not taking her eyes off the space Andrew had just vacated.

I know.

His voice had already shifted, sharper now, more focused, the calm replaced by something more alert, more dangerous.

Stay close, he added.

This time, she didn't argue.

The room continued around them as though nothing had happened. Music drifted softly through the air, glasses clinked, and laughter carried across conversations that suddenly felt too controlled to be natural. But Elena could see it now the subtle shifts, the unnatural movements, the way certain people positioned themselves too deliberately.

You see it? Dominic murmured beside her, his gaze scanning the room without appearing obvious.

Yes, she replied quietly, her attention sharpening with every passing second.

Don't panic.

I'm not panicking.

Good.

Because he was not visibly, not in a way anyone else would notice, but she could feel it in the tension of his posture, in the way his attention never settled in one place for too long. He was calculating, tracking every movement, every possible exit, every potential threat.

Where? she asked under her breath.

Not sure yet.

That was enough to confirm it.

This wasn't a misunderstanding.

This wasn't coincidence.

This was planned.

A man passed too close behind them, his shoulder brushing just slightly against Elena's arm. She stiffened immediately, instinct taking over. Dominic's hand came to her back, firm and grounding, pulling her subtly closer without drawing attention.

Easy, he murmured.

I don't like this, she admitted.

Neither do I.

Across the room, Andrew was gone.

Elena's stomach dropped. He left.

I see that.

That confirmed everything.

This wasn't a confrontation.

It was a setup.

A server approached with a tray of drinks, offering them with a polite, neutral expression. Elena reached instinctively, but Dominic caught her wrist before she could take anything, his grip quick and unyielding.

Don't.

The sharpness in his voice made her freeze instantly.

Why

Because it's not safe.

The server didn't react, didn't question it, didn't even hesitate. That alone was enough to raise suspicion.

Move, Dominic said quietly.

They turned toward the exit, walking at a controlled pace, not rushing, not drawing attention, but every step deliberate. The distance felt longer than it should have, each second stretching as tension built beneath the surface.

Halfway across the room, everything shifted.

A man near the entrance adjusted his jacket.

Elena saw it the unmistakable outline of a weapon.

Her breath caught. Dominic.

I see him.

Time slowed.

The room seemed to blur around them, the noise fading into the background as focus narrowed to movement, positioning, timing.

Now, Dominic said.

And everything exploded.

A glass shattered somewhere to their left, followed by a sharp scream as panic rippled through the crowd. The man moved but Dominic was faster, pulling Elena sharply against him and turning his body to shield hers completely.

Stay behind me, he ordered.

This wasn't an execution.

There was no immediate gunfire.

No chaos in the traditional sense.

This was controlled.

Coordinated.

An extraction attempt.

Two men moved in from the side, not targeting Dominic, but closing in on her. One reached out, grabbing her arm with force.

Elena!

She didn't recognize the voice.

Dominic reacted instantly, his movement precise and brutal. One strike, fast and calculated, dropped the man to the ground before he could react. The second lunged, but Dominic blocked him, twisting sharply and forcing him back with controlled violence that left no room for hesitation.

Move! he snapped.

They pushed forward as the crowd scattered, panic spreading rapidly. Elena's heart pounded as she stayed close, her hand gripping the front of his jacket without thinking, anchoring herself to him as everything blurred around them.

Another figure stepped into their path, moving too fast, too close. A hand clamped around her wrist, pulling hard enough to throw her off balance.

She gasped. Dominic!

For a split second, the world tilted

Then the grip was gone.

Dominic's hand closed around hers, pulling her back against him with unyielding force.

Don't let go, he said, his voice low and lethal.

I'm not, she breathed.

They reached the exit, cold air hitting her face as they stepped outside into the night. Cars screeched, doors slammed, movement everywhere as the situation spilled beyond the walls of the building.

Inside, Dominic ordered.

She didn't hesitate.

This wasn't fear anymore.

This was survival.

She got into the car. He followed immediately, slamming the door shut behind them.

Go.

The car shot forward instantly.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then her breath broke. They tried to take me.

Yes.

You knew.

I suspected.

You didn't tell me.

I didn't want you distracted.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly. I could've been taken.

No, he said sharply.

She froze at the certainty in his tone.

No? she repeated.

His gaze locked onto hers, intense and unwavering. I wouldn't let that happen.

The conviction in his voice stole her breath.

You can't control everything, she whispered.

No, he said. But I can control who gets close to you.

Silence settled between them, heavy and charged. Her hand was still gripping his jacket. She hadn't let go.

Neither had he.

They were after me, she said.

Yes.

Not you.

No.

That truth settled deeply.

I'm not just part of this anymore, she said quietly.

No, he replied. You're the center of it.

Her pulse stuttered.

That's not what I wanted.

I know.

Their eyes held, closer now than ever before not because of tension, but because of truth.

I'm still not leaving, she said softly.

His jaw tightened, but he didn't argue this time.

Then you stay, he said quietly.

Not as a command.

Not as control.

But as something chosen.

The car disappeared into the night.

Behind them, chaos.

Ahead of them

War.
