Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Aftermath

The estate felt different when they returned.

Not louder, not chaotic but heavier, as though something unseen had settled into its foundation and refused to leave. The gates closed behind them with a quiet finality that echoed deeper than sound, and for the first time since Elena had arrived, the house no longer felt like a place of controlled power. It felt like something was waiting.

The car rolled to a smooth stop beneath the portico, but neither of them moved immediately. The silence inside the vehicle stretched, thick with everything that hadn't been said since they left the gala. Elena's hand remained curled tightly in the fabric of Dominic's jacket, her fingers still gripping as though letting go might unravel the fragile sense of safety she had held onto in the chaos.

Dominic noticed.

He always did.

But he didn't pull away.

Are you hurt? He asked at last, his voice low and steady, though the tension beneath it was impossible to miss.

No, she replied, her breath still uneven despite her effort to steady it. I'm fine.

His gaze didn't shift from her face. He studied her carefully, as if her answer alone wasn't enough like he needed to confirm it for himself, detail by detail, breath by breath. Only when he was certain did he nod, though the tightness in his jaw remained.

Stay close, he said as he stepped out of the car.

This time, she didn't argue.

Inside, the estate was already in motion.

Marco approached first, his expression set in controlled urgency, the kind that came from years of discipline rather than panic. The perimeter is secure, he reported. No breaches here.

How did they get that close? Dominic asked.

His tone remained calm, but Elena had begun to recognize the difference between calm and control. This wasn't calm. This was restraint.

Inside help, Marco said grimly. Has to be.

Silence followed.

Cold and deliberate.

Dominic didn't react immediately, but something shifted in him. Subtle, but unmistakable. His posture straightened slightly, his presence sharpening into something more dangerous, more focused. It wasn't anger in the way most people understood it.

It was something far more controlled.

Find them, he said.

There was no raised voice, no visible threat, but the weight of the command settled heavily in the room.

Marco nodded once. We will.

And Marco, Dominic added quietly.

Marco paused.

When you do

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Marco understood.

He turned and left without another word.

Elena watched the exchange in silence, her chest tightening as the meaning behind it settled in. This wasn't just about an attack. This was betrayal from within and she understood enough now to know what that meant in Dominic's world.

They were organized, she said after a moment, her voice quieter now, more thoughtful than afraid. That wasn't random.

No, Dominic replied. It wasn't.

She hesitated briefly before continuing. They didn't try to kill anyone.

They weren't there to kill, he said. They were there to take you.

The words landed differently now heavier in the stillness than they had in the chaos. Without the adrenaline, without the urgency of movement, the truth of it settled more deeply.

Elena drew in a slow breath, her arms folding lightly across her chest as the memory replayed in sharper detail: the hands grabbing her, the force of it, the moment her balance broke.

I felt it, she admitted. The way they moved. It was coordinated.

It was planned, Dominic corrected. Timed. Structured. Funded.

Her gaze lifted to meet his. By Caldwell?

Yes.

And the people behind him?

There was a brief pause just long enough to confirm the answer before he spoke it.

Yes.

The confirmation settled between them, adding weight to something that had already begun to take shape long before tonight.

Elena moved further into the room, her steps slower now, more deliberate. The fear that had surged through her earlier hadn't disappeared; it had shifted, reshaped itself into something quieter, more controlled.

You said it would get worse, she murmured.

It will.

There was no comfort in his tone, no attempt to soften the truth.

She pressed her lips together briefly before speaking again. I almost slowed you down.

Dominic's head turned sharply toward her.

You did exactly what you were supposed to do.

I hesitated, she said. When they grabbed me,

You're not trained for that, he interrupted, his voice firmer now. You're not supposed to be.

But I'm here, she replied, meeting his gaze without hesitation. That's no longer an excuse.

The silence that followed wasn't empty. It held weight, consideration, something shifting beneath the surface.

You're right, he said finally.

That caught her off guard.

I am? she asked.

Yes.

He stepped closer, not abruptly, but with purpose. You're here. Which means you adapt.

Her pulse quickened slightly.

Then teach me, she said.

The words came without hesitation this time.

Not a challenge.

Not defiance.

A decision.

Dominic studied her for a long moment, his gaze searching for doubt, for uncertainty, for anything that suggested she didn't fully understand what she was asking.

He didn't find it.

You don't ask for things halfway, he said quietly.

I'm not asking halfway.

Another pause followed, longer this time, heavier with meaning.

Then

Fine.

The word settled between them with quiet finality.

If you stay, he continued, you learn everything.

Her breath caught slightly. Everything?

How to read a room. How to move when something feels wrong. How to survive when control disappears.

And you think I can do that? she asked.

His gaze held hers without wavering.

I think you already started.

Something in her steadied at that.

Before she could respond, a sharp crash echoed from down the hallway, breaking the moment cleanly in two.

Both of them turned.

Sofia appeared seconds later, her movement quick but controlled. We found something, she said.

Dominic's attention sharpened instantly. What?

A device, she replied. Hidden near the east corridor. It's no longer active.

Elena's stomach tightened. A tracker?

Sofia nodded.

Silence settled again.

They were watching movement inside the house, Elena said slowly, piecing it together.

Yes, Dominic confirmed.

Her gaze sharpened further. Then this didn't start tonight.

No.

It's been building.

Yes.

The realization settled fully now.

They've been watching us this whole time.

Dominic didn't deny it.

Elena exhaled slowly, her thoughts aligning with a clarity that hadn't been there before. Then we stop reacting, she said.

Both Dominic and Sofia looked at her.

We make them react instead.

A brief pause followed.

Then Sofia's expression shifted slightly, approval flickering across her face.

Dominic's gaze remained fixed on Elena, something unreadable passing through it.

You're learning faster than I expected, he said.

I don't have a choice.

No, he agreed. You don't.

The silence that followed felt different, less uncertain, more focused.

Elena took a slow breath, her shoulders easing slightly as fear gave way to something steadier. I meant what I said, she added quietly. I'm not leaving.

Dominic stepped closer, closing the space between them until the air itself seemed to tighten.

I know.

Her pulse rose again, but this time it wasn't fear.

If this gets worse, he said, his voice lower now, more personal, you don't hesitate.

I won't.

If I tell you to move, you move.

I will.

If I say run

I won't run from you.

That stopped him.

Completely.

The words lingered between them, heavier than anything else she had said.

Slowly, his gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes.

That's not what I meant, he said quietly.

I know.

Silence stretched, closer now, more dangerous in its stillness.

You're not afraid, he said.

I am, she admitted. I just won't let it control me.

Something in his expression shifted again deeper this time, harder to define.

You should be, he said.

Do you? she asked.

A pause.

Then

No.

His voice lowered further.

Of what happens to people who stay too close to me.

Her breath caught, but she didn't step back.

I already chose that, she said.

And for the first time

Dominic didn't pull away.
